OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - Nov. 12-16, 2018
Honoring Veterans at Jones Elementary
Shout Out! to Jones ES first-graders for their celebration of Veterans Day! They colored the American flag, attached it to skewers and then lined the sidewalk outside the building with their flags. Teachers and students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and showed their support for our veterans!
Ms. Parker's Pals
City Careers
Shout Out! to the City of Wilson Operations Center for hosting a career fair for 40 students in The Gentlemen's Agreement Mentoring Program. The students were exposed to an array of career opportunities that are available to them right here in Wilson when they graduate. Special thanks to the school-level liaisons - Dedrick Payton (Beddingfield), Chara Batts (Fike) and Marcus Johnson (Hunt) - and to the City's Director of Human Resources Agnes Speight and Human Resources Coordinator Christian Holland for their commitment to The Gentlemen’s Agreement.
Taking the Wheel
Shout Out! to Wilson Police Officers Causey, Cox and Sherill and to the Tarboro Chief of Police Jesse Webb for talking with a group of Fike HS sophomores about the dangers of driving while impaired. The officers shared information with the students about how DWIs aren't limited to alcohol impairment. The students participated in a driving simulation and other activities. Thanks to Fike Counselor Jeannie Lyndon for coordinating the demonstration. The students were engaged and learned valuable information that could save lives.

Strong Message
Shout Out! to Winstead ES for using red cups to spread a message of love during Red Ribbon Week. Several people driving by Winstead on Ward Blvd. contacted WCS and asked that the school be recognized because they were so touched by the message to "Choose Love!"
Nance at NCCAT
Shout Out! to Hunt HS Teacher Angie Nance (seated far left) for receiving a scholarship to attend a week of professional development through the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT). She attended a session at the Ocracoke campus with other educators from across the state.
Hunt Volunteers
Shout Out! to the Hunt HS students who volunteered at the Whirligig Festival. They did an outstanding job and received many compliments from the festival committee. Hunt Counselor Amanda Hodges is so proud of the way the students represented Hunt and the entire school district.
Don and Doff
Shout Out! to Fike HS Health Science II students for finishing up their Infection Control Practice Unit! One of the skills they learned was how to appropriately don (put on) and doff (remove) Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) without exposing themselves to contaminants.

More Shout Outs!
- Gardners ES would like to Shout Out! Vick ES Teachers Carol Price and Mandy Jenkins. They collaborated with the third- and fourth-grade teachers at Gardners to provide them with professional development on science kits. The staff at Gardners appreciates their time, expertise and partnership. Ms. Price and Ms. Jenkins both previously taught at Gardners, so it was like coming home for them.
- New Hope ES wants to thank Sheriff Calvin Woodard and Sr. Deputy Pollard for speaking to fifth-graders at their recent Town Meeting for students. Their visit was a followup to Red Ribbon Week.
- Frederick Douglass ES would like to Shout Out! Second-grade Teacher Sonja Hayes. When the school had its Fall Book Fair, Ms. Hayes donated enough money for students in need to purchase a book or another item!
- Lucama ES Counselor Donna Winborne would like to Shout Out! the Wilson County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board for helping with the funding of Lucama's Red Ribbon Week celebrations. The ABC Board's generous contribution allowed the school to purchase red ribbons, pencils, stickers and suckers. "We are thankful for all they do for WCS. Our contact person is Larry Etheridge, and he is awesome!"
- Bennett Optimist Club would like to Shout Out! the Wilson Early College Academy students - Jaylin Anderson, Evelin Uribe-Nigoche, Kaliyah Small and Jasmine Jackson - who assisted with the club's baby back rib dinner fundraiser. Everyone raved about the students' positive attitudes and work ethic. Funds will benefit families with children who have serious illnesses.
