September 2022
WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME BACK!!
Planting Hope with Kindness
Every year we have a school theme for the year. This year our theme is Planting Hope with Kindness. Students are learning that it only takes a moment to make someone's day with a kind word, smile, or kind gesture. Continue to spread kindness like confetti!
Just a Reminder
The Back to School Packet is available in ParentVUE and should be completed by a Parent/Guardian for each student as soon as possible, but no later than September 16. The information you provide will allow school staff to ensure your students’ safety this school year.
Schools are Closed
As a reminder, in observance of Labor Day, schools and offices are closed this Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5. As we close out a busy and productive first week back to school, I wish you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.
Check out the Back to School webpage for more information.
Important APP
If your child is a bus rider, please consider downloading the Here Comes the Bus app.
Review the PWCS Code of Behavior with your Student
Make sure you and your children understand the expectations, rules and regulations, policies, and procedures it contains. Use these “rules of the road” to navigate opportunities and challenges in PWCS, while protecting the health, safety, and rights of PWCS students and staff, and the quality of our learning environment.
2022-23 Calendar and Reference Guide available on the PWCS webpage
Due to current supply chain issues with paper, the Communications Department will not be printing the 2022-23 School Guide and Calendar at this time. A condensed PDF version of the calendar can be found here at the pdf link below.
September is Attendance Awareness Month
PWCS will recognize Attendance Awareness Month throughout September with the theme “Every Student, Everyday: Showing Up Matters for R.E.A.L.” - building Routines, increasing Engagement, providing Access to resources, and supporting Learning. Combining the efforts of the U.S. Department of Education and Attendance Works, PWCS will be celebrating and promoting the importance of good school attendance.

LOW COST HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM
The effects of COVID continue to impact Virginia’s 1.3 million public school students. Families are still facing many challenges. The Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) is sponsoring a Back-to-School campaign to let families know how they can receive low-cost or no-cost health insurance through Medicaid and FAMIS. Find out who qualifies for coverage and learn about Medicaid and FAMIS benefits at FAMIS. To see if your child may qualify, use the Eligibility Screening Tool and answer five easy questions, and then apply online.
Visit the FAMIS Back to School webpage on the Cover Virginia website for more information.
Optional School Laptop & Device Insurance Available
Parents/guardians have the option to purchase low-cost student device insurance through the PWCS-approved third-party vendor, Securranty.
- If purchased, the insurance covers unlimited repairs or replacements for everything from broken screens, lost chargers, and accidental damage, with a zero deductible for one year on a school-issued HP device. The insurance cost is $32.95, which may be significantly less than repair or replacement costs without insurance.

PWCS Social Emotional Needs Assessment survey
As our 2022-23 school year launches, PWCS is asking parents/guardians of students in grades 3-12 to help us be prepared to support our students by completing a brief social emotional needs assessment. We recognize that additional support could be needed to remove barriers that impede learning. The assessment will close on September 16, 2022.
