Reading
Finishing Sig 2 brought excitement to students in the classroom. To celebrate students watched Mr. Peabody & Sherman. This movie was selected because characters visited many of the places students read about in the Time Travel story of Tom and Eric.
Creativity is flourishing as students write stories "The Life of a Chick." Students are writing and illustrating individual stories about the adventures of a newly hatched chick! These are being done on Scribble Press, an iPad app, that allows students to share immediately. These young authors plan to share with their parents and with the sixth grade, who are also studying embryology.
QR Code Scavenger Hunt
Using QR codes, students read clues and took photos of their answers; leading them around the school. During this activity, students learned the meaning of culinary and the pronunciation of grotesque (and how to find their answers).
Book It Pizza Party
Students meeting the requirements for Book It celebrated by having a pizza party.
Embryology Unit
Megan Burda shared information about the development of chicks before showing kids how to candle eggs. Ask your child what we learned by candling the eggs.
Math
In math, students learned how to make a table to solve a problem with equal groups (beginning multiplication). Students made arrays and wrote number sentences for them. They also had a "chance" to predict outcomes with probability experiments. Finally, students learned about telling time to the nearest quarter hour!
Social Studies and Science
Students can't wait to guess the mystery item each day in Social Studies. Selected items are passed around for students to determine their use. They are becoming quite experienced at looking for clues. This is part of our pioneer unit where students learn about the hardships of our ancestors (Zondle: Our Country Long Ago, Chapter 5).
Continued study of solids, liquids and gases took place during our science time. Now we are moving on to Changes in Matter, Chapter 10.
Embryology
Each Tuesday, grade two students eagerly await a visit from Megan Burda, Fillmore County 4-H Extension agent. She shares bountiful information with the students about the study of embryos. This week, time was devoted to candling of our 14 eggs.
