COLLABORATING WITH COACHES
Jennifer Kumsher and the instructional coach partnered up to tackle a new unit in 7th Grade TAG, escape rooms. Students worked in partners to solve logic puzzles, riddles, cryptograms and pictograms.
Emberly Albertson wanted some organized/guided notes to help keep her Conceptual Chemistry students focused during class. Together, we created a set of graphic organizers that will help keep the information organized and the students focused during class.
By teaming up with the Instructional Coach, the students in Rayshel Witte's 2nd grade are getting an extra scoop of reading help. They are working to apply decoding skills in order to increase or sustain fluency needed for comprehension.
In accordance with an increased focus on writing skills in elementary, 3rd Grade teacher Megan Sears, is collaborating with the IC. Their goal is to expose students to quality writing, while refining the process of interpeting a writing prompt and delivering an approptiate and quality response.
ELEMENTARY LEARNING LABS
Some of these teachers who participated in an Elementary Learning Lab had the opportunity to observe Tracy Smeby's whole group and small group reading class while others observed a math Number Talk and ELA Write Aloud in Nikki Katter's class.
Takeaways included:
- A renewed sense of organization being key to smooth transitions
- Teaching activites with a high degree of student involvement
- Incorporating movement breaks throughout the lesson
- Utilizing a writing process poster to reinforce the procedure
- Explaining teacher's thinking while modeling writing can happen at all grade levels
- Signs and symbols need frequent review of meaning and what they do (+,=)
- Transitions with quieter movments are still effective, while maintaining classroom control.
