Hillcrest Family Newsletter

January 25th, 2019

Brrrrr....

We will continue to keep an eye on the weather in the next week. As it gets colder, we want to make sure that everyone knows that when temperatures drop below zero, we keep students indoors for recess. Otherwise, we send them outside to play. Warm mittens, hats and snow gear keep students warm and dry for the afternoon. There are a lot of items in our lost and found. If your child is missing something, stop by and take a look!

Science and Engineering Day - February 14th

It's that time of year again, when we have the opportunity to welcome students from the FLIGHT Academy into our school. The sixth, seventh and eighth grade students have planned design challenges that our students will participate in on Thursday, February 14. The Hillcrest students will be choosing their own schedule of events for this day.

We could use your help in collecting the supplies that we need for the design challenges. Please see the Sign-Up Genius link for a list of supplies.

There are also some items that we are asking our families to collect. Please try to save the items listed below and send them into school:

- Cardboard - various sizes and weights

-Bubblewrap

-Bottle caps

-Newspaper/magazines

We need all supplies to be delivered to Hillcrest by Friday, February 1 so we can sort them before the big day.

Thank you so much for your help. The students really love this special day!

Optimist Swim Club Volunteer

Hillcrest has always been a participant in the Waukesha Optimist Club's annual Swim Meet. This meet, held at Waukesha South High School's Pool on April 6th is an event for 3rd through 5th graders a cross the Waukesha area. We are looking for a coach who would be willing to organize and coach the team this year. There are three district wide practice times at South's Pool, covered by a certified lifeguard, already set up by the district. The coach would help students sign up for meet events, supervise and give feedback during practices and manage the students during the swim meet. This is a PAID position with a stipend available from the school district. If you are interested in coaching, please reach out to Tanya Perez in the office.

Run Play Run is Back!

Dan Anderson is looking for students who are excited to play and have fun after school! If you are interested in the Run Play Run program, please see the attached flyers below. Signed waivers are needed to participate. Participants in the Park and Rec Cool School program are welcome to sign up as well.

This will take about 4 to 5 music meetings. Then, starting in mid to late February, I will be offering a recorder club to the students who would like to further develop their skills on the recorder. This will be an optional activity provided during lunch recesses on Mondays and Wednesdays for approximately four to six weeks. Students will be invited to the music room after lunch to continue to learn and practice recorders.

Safe Arrival - Available Now!

Hillcrest is now fully up and running with the district's new attendance reporting system, Safe Arrival. Safe Arrival allows you to report an absence or appointment at any time from your phone. Our attendance line is still available for reporting absences but we encourage you to give Safe Arrival a try. We know you will find it to be an easy to use system that is available at times that work for YOU!

1) By far the easiest way to interact with the new system is by downloading the app on your phone and signing up for an account.

2) If you are not an app user and prefer to use your computer signup and login at https://go.schoolmessenger.com/

3) The phone option is still available by calling the attendance line at school. There will be a menu there to transfer your call into the new system. You may however, want to use the direct number 1-866-490-7371. By dialing direct from a phone that is registered with the district, the system should recognize the number you are calling from and be able to quickly identify your children and allow you to confirm their absence.
