A DAY THAT CHANGED AMERICA FOREVER

Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, is a day that caught the country by surprise but will never be forgotten. This day changed america and its justice system in ways we had never seen before. On 9/11, the United States of America suffered the largest loss of life from an enemy attack on American soil.

THE FOUR PLANES:

American 11

  • There were 5 terrorists on the flight
  • The plane flew at 7:54
  • The hijacking began at 8:14
  • The flight crashed into the North tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46
  • All the passengers on board were killed instantly when the plane made impact with the tower, along with an unknown number of civilians in the tower

United 175

  • There were 5 terrorists on the flight
  • The plane flew at 8:14
  • Many passengers made calls to people on the ground, including Peter Hanson
  • Peter called his father Lee Hanson at 8:52, warning him of the danger
  • Peter told him to call United Airlines, Lee called Easton PD with the news
  • At the same time, a male flight attendant also made a call to the ground
  • He reported to an office in San Francisco that both pilots had been killed, a flight attendant had been stabbed, and the terrorists were in control of the plane, this call lasted around 2 minutes
  • At 9:00 Lee was called again by his son
  • The call dropped right before the flight crashed, and the last words Lee heard from his son were, "I think we are going down. I think they intend to go to Chicago or someplace and fly into a building. Don't worry, Dad, if it happens, it'll be very fast. My god, oh my god."
  • After the call cut off, Lee turned on the TV to try to see what was happening, and saw the 2nd aircraft hit the South World Trade Center at 9:03

American 77

  • There were also 5 terrorists on this flight
  • The plane took off at 8:20
  • The hijacking began at 8:51
  • At 9:37, the flight crashed into the Pentagon at approximately 530 miles per hour
  • All on board, as well as civilian and military personnel in the building were killed when the plane crashed into the building

United 93

  • There were 4 terrorists on this flight
  • The plane took off at 8:42
  • Hijacking began at 9:28
  • The flight had 33 passengers and 4 terrorists on board
  • More than 10 people on board called people on the ground to tell what was happening
  • At 9:57, the passengers began their assault on the terrorists
  • Several passengers ended calls to join the revolt
  • One caller ended their message with, "Everyone's running up to first class. I've got to go."
  • At 10:02 the plane went down, crashing into an empty field in Pennsylvania at 580 miles an hour
  • The terrorists had intended to crash the plane into a symbol of the American Republic such as the White House, but they were defeated from doing so by the passengers

THE AFTERMATH:

  • This tragedy brought upon many changes to the US, both socially and legally
  • Among many changes that went into effect after 9/11, one that a lot of people are probably most familiar with would be the increased airport security, since before the attacks flight regulations, security, and airport laws and guidelines were much more laid back, because since nothing like this had ever happened, nothing like it was expected
  • Socially, Islamophobia is another issue that was made much more severe as a result of this horrible day. Although the terrorists on 9/11 were a part of Al Qaeda, which has many of its roots in Islam, we as responsible Americans should always remember that terrorism has no religion
  • Also another social issue that can be very controversial is the topic of conspiracy theories; some people think the attacks were planned by the US government, etc - there are so many theories out there about the attacks
