Join Us Next Tuesday in Harrisburg!
Fellow Charter Leaders,
We are in a firestorm of political upheaval and need to stand up collectively, empower our parents to advocate, and respond as a united front. We are stronger together and now is one of those times that we must raise our voices, tell our stories and push back.
As you are aware, Governor Wolf recently proposed detrimental changes to Charter School funding and policy. The biggest threat is an estimated 35% cut in special education funding to charter students. On top of new regulations the Governor wants to impose, there is so much misinformation, even our allies get confused! We need to defend our ability to serve quality education, provide security to our children, and protect parental choice going forth.
To that end, we are proposing that every charter school in Philadelphia participate in 2 actions:
1. GO TO HARRISBURG ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19th
- House Speaker Turzai has invited us to brief the Republican House Caucus
- A round of 25+ Capital meetings with our Philly Legislators and Republican and Democratic Leadership
Our goal is to have 150 charter school leaders, PARENTS, and students from every legislative district in Philadelphia present. All will be ready to share their stories and be crystal clear with legislators as to why their charter school matters and the harm that the Governor’s proposals will cause to charter students.
We will provide buses, breakfast and lunch. Buses will leave at 7am and return by 6pm. Once we have everyone’s turnout number, we will finalize the locations of the buses.
Here is what we need to know from you by Tuesday, November 5th:
1. Will your school participate?
2. If yes, how many school leaders, parents and students can you bring?
Please breakdown your number by staff, parents and students.
2. MEET WITH YOUR STATE SENATOR AND REPRESENTATIVE BY MID-DECEMBER
Gather your parents and meet with your state legislators at their local offices or at your schools. Even if you have met with them recently, reach out specifically to brief them on the impact of the Governor’s proposals. If you have never met them, then this is a great opportunity to start a relationship. The most important thing is that your elected officials know you and hear the stories of your parents and students who live and attend school in their district.
If you need support we will help you. Just let us know. We are attaching two things to get you started:
A. OUR TALKING POINTS: What we are asking our elected representative to do regarding the Governor’s proposals:
1 - Stop Cuts to Special Ed Funding
2 - Don’t Threaten Innovation and Equity
3 - Set the Record Straight – Stop Misinformation
B. LEGISLATIVE LIST: Use it to find your state legislators.
Additionally, Philadelphia Charters for Excellence (PCE) will be sending out membership information in the next few weeks. We continue to thrive and serve but can’t afford to provide this service without your support. Please consider the nominal fee of membership as a part of our sector's sustainability.
In summary, by Tuesday, November 5th, please respond to this email and let us know:
1. Will you go to Harrisburg on November 19th and how many parents, staff and students will you bring?
2. Will you meet with your local legislators in Philly between now and mid-December?
