We all became educators because we have a passion to help kids. Our training has primarily been in strategies on instruction and behavior. I know in the back of my head I think that I would do anything for my students and I know you would to. Last Friday we had a staff member in a situation that goes well beyond our training. A student suffered a serious injury that ended up causing him to go to the hospital and have surgery. When the injury happened, Andrea Dorko didn't hesitate. She took her sweatshirt off, wrapped it around the wound, and directed others to call emergency responders and move students away from the area. I am sorry that she was in that situation, but amazed by her following her instinct to help this student in a difficult situation.

How to group students can be a paralyzing decision. There is no right answer as different structures fit with different learning opportunities. Interestingly enough, when we talk to students they prefer to be in groups without friends as they don't want to have disagreements with them.

In this article, the authors affirm this when they state, "Having students interact with one or more peers can build community, increase engagement, and make learning more active. But deciding whether and how best to form groups can be daunting." They walk you through rationale and strategies to make this work in your classroom. Enjoy!

Student council homeroom representative elections will be held between September 23-October 10th. Feel free to run elections anytime between those dates and in any way that makes sense to you and your team! Once you have completed the attached form, give your homeroom representative the permission slip that will be placed in your mailbox.
