Word for the Warrior
I would like everyone to take a look at the brief article below, published by Solution Tree regarding the work of collaborative teams. There are many teams within a school. For us at Sevier, our work and our culture depends on these collaborative structures that support our work toward our vision:
Our Leadership Team is the guiding coalition of the school. This team drives the work aligned to the vision, hears action team reports and recommendations and makes decisions on behalf of school stakeholders as to how we progress toward our vision.
JSMS Action Teams exist to tackle specific topics/issues that align to our vision and through collective inquiry, they focus on specific topics and based on research and teacher input, make recommendations for specific action that JSMS can take to move towards our vision. These teams report back to our school LT to ensure that the work is being deployed and integrated school-wide as we progress toward who we want to be as a school.
Faculty Meetings-Our monthly faculty meetings are focused on building our knowledge and capacity of a focus determined to be of utmost importance in working on the work most pertinent to JSMS. This year, our focus is supporting student social-emotional learning Restorative Practices. Many of you have commented on how much smoother this year seems to be progressing. I firmly believe that this is the result of a positive climate change that is not merely a fluke. This is because we are taking intentional measures to connect with our students and our efforts to empower them as people with power over their circumstance. You are helping students to feel valued and you are taking time for them to be truly "seen" and also providing opportunities for them to truly "see" others.
Collaborative Planning Teams: These teams are critical to our school success as you plan weekly and collaboratively to support students specifically through content. It is through the work of these teams that we ensure a quality and guaranteed and viable (equitable) curriculum for our students.
Grade Level Teams: Grade Level teams work together to ensure consistency and continuity for all students. We support students to the greatest degree when they know what to expect in each classroom and when we can provide the greatest degree of fidelity to classroom pedagogy.
Our commitment to true teamwork requires the highest level of work and humility. This work requires us to truly behave as team. We teach our athletic teams to value the group over oneself. We work to help the star players not steal the spotlight and be "me" centered, but to support others and share responsibility. We work with the players who have the most to learn to depend on others and work hard and depend that their teammates will support them. We encourage and demand that our students support other students in words and action and to always have each others' backs. Our collaborative teams require the same. I ask that you take a few moments today to reflect upon your role as a team member and think about what role you play. Are you doing your part? Are you a leader? If so, are you acting as a servant leader and building others up? Are you taking time to learn and ask questions from your teammates to ensure you are providing the support required of a leader? Are you a new teacher or teacher to a grade level? Are you asking questions and are you seeking opportunities to support your team where you can? Are you speaking up and questioning what does not make sense? You matter just as much as the team leader! Your team depends upon you to bring new vision and climate to the team. Are you a support member to your team? Are you doing your part to strengthen your team both in content and in culture? It matters. To be an effective team, we must act as a body and truly believe that each member brings equal value to a team. No one is better than another. We all must act in humility and lift each other up. This does not mean we will always agree, but it does mean that when we do not, we will talk directly, honestly and respectfully to each other. Dissonance will exist with any group that is progressing, but we MUST be a unified front for students, parents and stakeholders. This is what it looks like to be an effective team. We are the strongest when we act as one.
Proud to be a Warrior,
Holly

Tech Budget
Hi All, all school tech budgets have cut. We have no school level tech funds. We are having to really do some problem solving as a result. SO....Be aware...in the next few years, we will be working to establish 3 network printers per grade level that will be housed in the LA classrooms. As printers fail, we won't replace the ones that fail. As one fails, we will buy the LA teacher a network printer and replace the printer that goes down with the LA teacher's classroom.

Sequoyah Scribe Does It AGAIN!
On Friday, during a live Facebook broadcast, the National Scholastic Press Association announced that "The Sequoyah Scribe" is a finalist for its annual "Pacemaker" award. The "Pacemaker" is the most prestigious award a student newspaper can win. It has been called the Pulitzer Prize of scholastic journalism.
Out of the 67 finalists from across the nation (and England), only six are middle school publications. This is the third time Sevier's student newspaper has been named a "Pacemaker" finalist. "The Scribe" won the award in 2013.
The winners will be announced in November at the national NSPA/JEA convention in Chicago.

Casey is giving the WOW rock to Ms. Young and Mrs. Wagner--
I chose to pass the rock to Ms. Young and Mrs. Wagner because they have shown so much support and motivation to the boys down in the Warrior Academy. They both take time out of their day to come and check on the boys and see how they are doing and if they can help them with anything. To me its that extra step that these kids need, and characteristics of true leaders
