Learn About and Participate in Restorative Circles
Please join us for dinner and learn about Restorative Practices that we use here at SDCCS.
Dear families:
One of the things I love most about the SDCCS community is exactly that - the community! From teaching after school programs on campus to being a parent of a student, and working with the teaching team in restorative circles, I have been moved by how connected and supportive the SDCCS community is.
On Wednesday, December 5th, at 5:30pm, I am excited to offer another wonderful way for your community to connect, communicate, and develop new peacemaking skills. I hope you'll join me for a Community Building Circle, presented by the National Conflict Resolution Center, funded by a grant from Live Well San Diego. We'll enjoy a light dinner and meet together in the powerful setting of a dialogue circle, which gives all participants a chance to speak, to be heard, and to have their input valued by the community. It will be a special time for a special group. Hope to see you there!
Many warm regards,
Ashley McGuire,
circle facilitator

Holidays Can Be Challenging For Kids and Adults Alike
I know that I can often become overwhelmed during the holidays. What I had not realized in the past was that my kids could sense it or they too could experience these feeling. I have included a few suggestions in making this winter break a success for the entire family.
Kids often look forward to and greatly anticipate this time of year but can become easily overwhelmed without their normal structure and routines. Letting your kids know what their day looks like at the beginning of the day will often help set them up for success. In addition to letting to them know about their schedules, discussing your expectations about behavior before parties or events allows the kids to clearly understand their roles. If you find that your schedule is getting busy it is recommended to find some intentional downtime for your kids where they can read, complete a puzzle or do a craft.
One of the hardest parts for all of us about having extended breaks, is the transition back to school. This can be hard for adults, and especially hard for kids. Taking a break from the day-to-day routine feels wonderful for a short time, however toward the end of the break, it is a good idea to return to your routines several days prior to the start of school. Although children will often resist structure, it provides them with a sense of security and familiarity and will help the transition to school feel less impactful.
Specifically, it is helpful for students to get back into their typical sleeping patterns and eating patterns. Encouraging physical activity, reducing screen time, and having time to read, write, or explore may help children start activating their “learning brains” again. Start talking to your students about school by focusing on positive aspects such as seeing friends, going on a field trip, an upcoming project they may be looking forward to, or simply what they will want to share about their break with their teachers and friends.
I hope that your upcoming break is lovely and we can't wait to see you in the new year!
Gratitude
We wanted to take a moment to thank you. Our school was created to be a space where parents can be involved in their child's education, a place of community and a place where all are welcomed.
Thank you for being involved parents.
Thank you for being communicative.
Thank you for your generosity.
Thank you for your time.
Most of all thank you for sharing your children with us.
Gala
The Gala is a really important event for our school for several reasons. First, it is the only adult night our for us as a community to kick up our heels and have some fun together. However, even more important, it is our major annual fundraiser that supports all of the programs we offer at SDCCS.
I would greatly encourage you to save the date and beginning making plans to attend. March 9th is the day and the Jacob's Center is the place. I have included some ticket pricing details below. I can not wait to see you there!
Early-bird ticket prices (through Feb 27)
Last-minute ticket prices (Feb 28 - Mar 8)
Walk-up ticket prices (Mar 9)
Construction Update
I will continue to update you as I receive information. Thank you for your flexibility!
