October is Bully Prevention Month
National Bullying Prevention Month is an annual designation observed in October. It’s always important to talk about the dangers of bullying and the trauma it can bring to it’s victims, but this month, use your voice to speak up extra loud. Research shows that bullying often leaves lasting negative effects on those who deal with it. These effects include chronic depression, increased risk of suicidal thoughts, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, poor general health, self-harm, substance abuse, and difficulty establishing trusting, reciprocal friendships and relationships. By speaking out, spreading kindness, and finding your other roles in bullying prevention, you’re making school settings, workplaces, and other environments safer and happier places. We must send a message that bullying will not be tolerated in our communities, and now is the perfect time to start.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Take a stand against bullying. Spread the word about the negative effects bullying can and has caused. Use #BullyingPreventionMonth to post on social media. If you want to do what’s best for your community, here are some great steps you can take to help stop bullying.
- Learn more about the issue. The more informed and better educated you are, the better you can make an impact.
- Practice what you preach. Children mock what they see, so be a good role model for the little ones around you.
- Talk to your kids. Ask them about experiences at school, and make sure they feel comfortable and know they can always come to you if something happens.
- Monitor what your child does online. Right now, cyberbullying is the fastest-growing type of harassment amongst young people.
- Form a group in your community or school system that stands for bullying prevention. Some good sources of support for this may be local businesses, PTA’s, local government, and service clubs in your area.
HISTORY
National Bullying Prevention Month was created by PACER and started as a weekly observation in 2006. In 2010 the observation changed to monthly.

October is Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Month
EFMP is a mandated program for active-duty families with medical, educational or psychological need(s) requiring special services of six months or more. EFMP enrollment is for children, spouses and even parents, if they are considered dependents, who are diagnosed with a physical, intellectual or emotional condition requiring special medical or educational services. There are more than 128,500 families in the military enrolled in the EFMP.
The program helps identify and provides support for families and coordinates assignments so families are located where the family member may receive the care and services they need. This is accomplished through coordination and communication between the EFMP family, the Regional Case Liaison, the Collateral Case Liaison at each installation Fleet and Family Service Center and Medical Treatment Facility Coordinators. The Regional Case Liaison and installation Collateral Case Liaisons work directly with families to answer questions and connect them with resources to improve quality of life and assist families in goal setting. The Regional Case Liaison and Medical Treatment Facility Coordinators work together to ensure Exceptional Family Members are identified, enrolled and provided with necessary medical and family support.
The goal at Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central is to provide the level of support that EFMP families need and deserve. We understand resources are limited for EFMP families serving OCONUS, so our network of dedicated professionals are ready to assist families with questions, concerns and support. If you would like more information, please contact your installation’s Collateral Case Liaison.
I look forward to working with you to ensure you and your family receive exceptional
support! Learn more about EFMP on a six-part podcast along with other helpful information,
video and learning materials at https://efmpandme.militaryonesource.mil/.

Federal Student Aid
I submitted my FAFSA; what happens next?
If you submitted your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online using FAFSA on the Web, then the U.S. Department of Education will process your application within 3-5 days. If you submitted a paper FAFSA, your application will be processed within 7-10 days.
Once your application is processed, you will receive a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR), which summarizes the information you provided on your FAFSA. Review your SAR and make sure all of the information is complete and accurate.
If there is any missing or incorrect information, then you should complete or correct your FAFSA as soon as possible. Your SAR will include your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC determines your eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant, and the college uses the EFC to assess your eligibility for other federal and nonfederal student aid.
Once your FAFSA is processed by Federal Student Aid, your SAR is sent to the colleges that you listed on your FAFSA. Each college will use the information on your SAR to determine your eligibility for federal and nonfederal student aid. The colleges you listed are responsible for creating your award package and disbursing your financial aid. However, listing a college on your FAFSA is generally not sufficient to receive aid at that college, as most colleges do not create award packages for every applicant who lists the college on a FAFSA.
You should contact the financial aid office at the college you plan to attend to find out if there are additional requirements for receiving financial aid and to learn more about the process of applying for aid at that college.
