Reader's Workshop
Christmas Themed Reading this Week!
Students will enjoy some of their favorite Christmas-themed books this week as we make them the focus of our studies. In preparation for our mClass benchmark in January, we will begin to focus on questions that the students will be asked on the test. Some of these question include the beginning, middle, and end of the story, also referred to as a 'summary' of the text. Then to incorporate some of what we most recently learned, students will 'act out' a favorite book with Christmas ties.
Fundations
Students will continue to focus on learned about the r-controlled vowels ar and or. We see these often in words such as story, storm, card, etc. After the unit test in the middle of the week, students will begin to learn and incorporate the three other r-controlled vowels, ir, er, and ur.
Writer's Workshop
Finalizing Our Fictional Episodes and Christmas Themed Writing
As we come to a close on our unit of fictional episodes, students will publish their writing by choosing just one story to edit. They will reread their stories and use a checklist to make sure they have completed all that we have learned so far.
By the last days of the week, students will use their writing skills to draft a Christmas Card. Their Christmas card will be written in the form of a letter which will foreshadow letter-writing which they will do later on in the school year.
Math
Reviewing Measurement
This week students will be reviewing all they have learned so far in measurement with a heavy emphasis on solving word problems. Measurement word problems are solved the same as the previous word problems we have studied. Students have learned so far to use a four-point word problem to solve, this includes:
- Equation
- Strategy (number line, base ten block, or expanded form)
- Correct Answer
- Units

Holidays Around the World
This week students will learn about different holidays around the world. Some of these holidays will include Hannukah, Christmas in Mexico (Feliz Navidad!) and Christmas in France and Russia. Each day classes will switch to go to another "country"or another teacher's classroom where they will learn about a different country and how they celebrate the holiday season.
