ConVal High School Happenings - June 2, 2023
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Evening, Cougar Nation!
We had quite a busy day on campus! We hosted our quarterly ConVal C.A.R.E.S ice cream social in the cafeteria for students who had received a C.A.R.E.S award. Congratulations to our recipients for modeling and demonstrating the actions described in ConVal C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Adaptability, Respect, Engagement, and/or Safety).
At 1:00pm we gathered in our gymnasium for a staff/student game before disseminating to different indoor and outdoor activities for the final hour of our school day. It was a great way to end our week together as a community on campus. Thanks to the staff members and students that hosted an activity and to those who supported our students at different events.
On Wednesday, I had the privilege to return to the classroom as a teacher. I truly enjoyed my time with the students as we discussed gross and fine motor skills. The students were respectful and engaged- part of what we strive for with C.A.R.E.S!
I look forward to recognizing and celebrating students next week on campus. Graduation is one week from tomorrow, and is certainly a very special day for our ConVal community. Please be sure to review the upcoming important dates and events listed below.
Our softball team will compete tomorrow in the second round of the playoffs on the road at Kingswood high school. We also have some athletes competing tomorrow at the Meet of Champions at Oyster River high school... best of luck to all!
Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!
Best,
Heather

Principal McKillop Teaches Human Growth and Development
During Staff Appreciation Week, Mrs. Grossi won a raffle for Ms. McKillop to teach one of her classes. On Wednesday, Ms. McKillop taught the Human Growth and Development class about toddler physical development, specifically about fine and gross motor skills. Fun fact: Children begin to crawl between 6-9 months. While some children crawl, others scoot or creep.

Congratulations to senior Ethan Marony
Congratulations to senior Ethan Marony, who was selected as the May CTE Student of the Month. Ethan was nominated by his Digital Photo & Video instructor, Lance Levesque, who shared that “Ethan has been a photo/video teaching assistant and has participated as a member of the photo/video program advisory committee for the last two years. Ethan arrives at school each day at 7:15 and spends his time working or seeing what needs to be done for the day including checking in returned morning equipment. I would like to mention that this is not a requirement of his extended learning opportunity, but rather a sign of his dedication as a teaching assistant as he is only required to attend third block. Ethan shows great patience when working with students and this peer support is vital to building up the new artists. He loves to be involved and support the whole of his classmates. He has a very calm, relaxed demeanor and a natural teaching technique and style. Ethan is highly respected by his peers due to his caring manner and the fact that he is very talented within all aspects of media arts. Ethan is an effective communicator and storyteller. He has a full understanding of the three elements of photo/video production, pre-production, production and post-production. He is fluent in Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere. He has a full understanding of the camera, lenses and lighting styles. He shares this knowledge with his peers and is one of the most effective teaching assistants I have worked with in my 22 years of teaching. Ethan graduates this year and this leaves some big shoes to fill, he will be missed by all. I would like to nominate Ethan as the CTE student of the month as a thank you for all he has done for the photo/video students.” Congratulations, Ethan!

Immersive Language Trip To Spain Planned For 2024
As an immersive language experience, the Spanish Department at ConVal Regional High School is in the early planning stages of a student trip to Spain in the spring of 2024. The tour is designed for students who are upper-level students (grades 10 and up) and have completed Spanish 2 by the end of fall semester 2023.
This will be a unique opportunity for students to explore the rich culture and history of this fascinating country. The tour will take them to the capital Madrid where they will witness the vibrant Spanish lifestyle firsthand while exploring the city's famous landmarks such as the Royal Palace, the Prado Museum, and the Puerta del Sol. The trip will also include a tour of the Andalusia region in the south, where students will experience the enchanting beauty of historic towns such as Seville, Granada, Ronda, and the Pueblos Blancos, the white villages nestled among the hills in the Andalusian mountains. The tour will give students the chance to learn about the country's rich cultural heritage while practicing their Spanish skills and making unforgettable travel memories.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please attend an orientation session on June 1, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the ConVal library. Questions? Please contact Señora Pacheco-McMahon at vmcmahon@conval.edu.
