Dear Walden Families,
We had a fantastic week back after Thanksgiving break! We are looking forward to next week's family math challenge! Additional information was shared at parent teacher conferences. Please read the section below and feel free to click on the link to participate!
Also, we have to two giving opportunities happening at Walden right now around the holiday season: our CASA gift drive and 109 Gives Back. Please see the PTO newsletter for more information and to sign up for a CASA gift. Please see the information below about our district 109 Gives Back gift drive. If you are able to give to either or both causes, we thank you!
Enjoy your weekend!

Deerfield 109 Family Math Week
I’m excited to share that we will be celebrating Deerfield 109 Family Math Week from December 5-9, 2022! During this virtual event, you will be able to access math-related stories and games with your elementary-aged child. This is a free experience designed to make math fun for the whole family. There are activities for every day of the week, however, you can complete the activities at your convenience.
To play, visit: https://www.mindresearch.org/deerfield-math-week.
Step 1 - Choose your Day (Day 1-5).
Step 2 - Select your grade level and language, which flips the card over.
Step 3 - Read the book in the bottom left hand corner together. This will tell you how to play the game displayed on the screen.
Step 4 - Play the game together.
Step 5 - When finished, return to the home screen to log your minutes by clicking on “Enter Your GamePlay Data” at the bottom of the page. Do this each time you play.
The goal is to see if our school can hit 10,000 minutes of family math engagement! The District 109 elementary school with the most minutes will receive a visit from JiJi, the ST Math penguin. We hope your family will engage in this fun and educational opportunity!
Upcoming: PPS Event on 12/6
Please join us on Tuesday, December 6 at 6:00 pm for our next PPS109 in-person networking/workshop opportunity. No sign-up ahead of time is needed. PPS109 is a partnership of DPS 109 administrators, teachers and parents/guardians who provide education and support to families of children with a wide range of needs. Our next event of the ‘22-’23 school year will focus on practical executive functioning strategies to implement with your children. This event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 pm in the Shepard Middle School LMC. We hope to see you there!
One Week Left For The 109 Gives Back Holiday Gift Drive
Each item will help a local family fulfill their holiday wishes! We will have holiday-themed boxes lined up in the lobby of each school between through December 9th to drop off gifts. If you are bringing gift cards, we ask that you drop them off in the front office. You can view the wish list by clicking here.

Chicago Weather... Here We Come! (2nd Posting)
Now that winter weather has begun, I wanted to share a quick reminder to send your child(ren) with winter and snow gear for recess. We strive to have outdoor recess whenever the weather allows it (15 degrees "real-feel" and above) as it gives kids a much needed chance to get some fresh air, sun, and an opportunity to run around.
- Warm jacket
- Hat
- Scarf
- Gloves/mittens
- Boots and snow pants as needed (children with boots and snow pants are allowed to play in the snow)
- An extra set of winter clothes at school in case they get wet outside.
We ask you to LABEL all jackets and winter gear so that lost items can be easily returned to your children.
Please help us keep the children happy outdoors by sending them to school with appropriate cold weather attire.
