Rock Your Body!
Summer Reading Theme - Movement & Dance
Focus: Get Moving!
Collaborate with P.E.: Team up with your coaches and gym teachers to teach the latest dance moves. Poll your students to learn their preferences, then use your SmartBoard to project videos from appropriate Youtube artists. (Play it safe: preview videos in advance!)
- Eli Unique – hip hop
- DeAnna Lee – country
- Kennedy Center – Latin, Swing, African
- GoNoodle/Get Moving - Fun elementary-level song-n-dance cartoons
Recruit some fun-loving staff members to learn along with the kids. Invite students to demonstrate their moves at an all-school assembly at the end of the school year the first day of school.
Focus: Researching the Roots of Dance
Digger deeper into the rich history dance & movement. Have students research their favorite genre or performer.
- Search DANCE videos in Encyclopedia Britannica and compare styles from around the world.
- Older students can dig into the Additional Resources in your Gale Suite to explore the Pop Culture Collection.
- Using the extensive resources at PBS Learning Media, lead a discussion in dance and censorship, from the Ghost Dance to Elvis to NYC. Have students debate the pros and cons of banning dance.
