A Message from the Principal
Dear Holy Family Catholic Community,
Happy Catholic Schools Week!
We had a great turn out at our HFCS Open House yesterday! Our student leaders gave fourteen families a tour of our school and our visitors were impressed with the poise and graciousness that our students demonstrated. Thank you to all the faculty and staff who were a welcoming and informed presence at the open house. It was great to see so many of our current families at the event, especially for the band performance – our school band is awesome!
It is the 100th day of school today and our Kindergarten students celebrated by having a fashion show highlighting their special personalized t-shirts that were decorated with one hundred items.
Thank you to everyone that attended the Coffee and Conversation with Father Hoa and me last Wednesday. We discussed the results of the survey that I sent to the community last fall asking you to identify the five best things about HFCS and the areas that need improvement. Here are the results.
Five Great Things about HFCS:
1. Excellent Teachers
2. Strong Catholic Environment
3. Caring Community
4. Small Class Size
5. Quality Education
In response to the “great things” about HFCS:
These things are absolutely what makes HFCS the welcoming, close knit, caring Catholic School community that we are! There is so much to love about our school!
Five Things Needing Improvement:
1. More Specials (such as Art, Technology, Spanish)
2. More Extra-Curricular Activities
3. Increased Enrollment/Larger Class Size
4. Improved and Healthier Lunch Options
5. Facilities
In response to the “needs improvement” items:
More Specials (#1.) and Larger Classes (#4.):
Increased enrollment is the key to offering more specials. In previous Coffee and Conversation with the Principal meetings I have discussed how the lower enrollment numbers this year (30 students less than 2018-2019) did not allow us to budget for addition special classes.
The School Advisory Council and a new Marketing Committee are actively working on a HFCS marketing strategic plan with the specific goal of increasing enrollment. We will still aim to have small classes, something we all love about HFCS, but we do need more students to provide your children with more social interactions and additional academic and extra-curricular programming.
I ask that every member of the HFCS community start a personal “word of mouth” marketing campaign to help grow our school. Share your love of our school with your neighbors and friends and invite them to tour the school. Yard signs will be handed out at our Family Lunch this week to help with this grass roots marketing initiative.
More Extra-Curricular Activities (#2):
I will be sending a survey to the parents and students next week to help identify which new clubs and extra-curricular activities the students would like to participate in next year. Providing enrichment opportunities during the Home and School Association meetings was one step toward providing our students with “mini” extra-curricular activities this year, creating after school clubs is an important goal for next year.
Improved Lunches (#4):
I met with Mr. Larry of Clara’s Kitchen last week to discuss the parents’ request for healthier lunches. He and I will continue to meet; he is currently working on a sample menu for next year. I will update you on his progress in this area.
Facilities (#5):
The truth is that we have an old building that needs constant maintenance! This years’ Pot O’ Gold revenues will help offset the cost of a much needed school roof replacement and the repair of the internal ceiling and wall damage that has been caused by our leaky roof. These are expensive and necessary projects. The Dad’s Club is also planning on initiating field repairs this spring.
Thank you for responding to the fall survey. We have a great school and it is only going to get better and better as we work on nurturing our “best things” and improving those things that need our attention.
Have a joyful Catholic Schools Week, thank you for supporting Catholic education!
Blessings,
Mrs. Ann Walters
Principal
