Assistant Principal Corner

Greetings Parents!

At Osceola Science we pride ourselves in offering our students a plethora of online instructional tools to support their extended learning opportunities. During our November Coffee with the Principal we will be offering an overview of our online instructional tools and provide you with tips on how you can support from home to maximize the benefits of these programs.

Our overview will include information about i-Ready, Study Island, Accelerated Reader (AR), and KHAN Academy. In order to provide all parents with an opportunity to attend, we will be hosting two sessions of our Online Resources Workshop. Both sessions will take place on Thursday, November 8th with Session 1 starting promptly at 8:30am – 9:30am and Session 2 from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

Weekly Assignments

Your support from home is essential in helping your child reach their full academic potential. Tools like I-Ready, Study Island, and AR are available to your child at home and are strongly encouraged. Our dedicated teachers are working to offer rich classroom lessons, now we rely on you to provide an extended learning opportunity at home.

Study Island

Starting this week (10/8 – 10/12) All 2-5 grade students are required to complete two (2) Study Island Reading Lessons and two (2) Study Island Math Lessons per as part of their weekly assignments. Students are able to retake each lesson until they earn a passing score of 80% or higher. 5th grade students will also be required to complete two (2) Study Island Science Lessons per week. Please note that teachers will be recording the highest score for each assigned lessons and documenting them in the gradebook. These will be part of your child’s weekly grades.

Students in K-1 will be expected to complete one (1) Study Island Reading Lesson and one (1) Study Island Math Lesson. Additional Reading foundational assignments may be assigned based on students’ needs.

i-Ready

All 1st – 5th grade students are required to complete 45 minutes in i-Ready Reading and 45 minutes in i-Ready Math per week and Kindergarten is required to complete 30 minutes per subject per week. These minutes are "on task" minutes and will only count if your child is actively working on the lessons. Although some time is provided in the classroom to complete part of this requirement, students need to work on this at home as well.

It is important that your child completes i-Ready lessons every week. Effective reading and mathematics skills are crucial in order for students to achieve academic success. The online program provides students digital instruction that allows them to work on their individualized online instructional plan, completing lessons that are based on the results from the i-Ready Diagnostic test. (Please note that I-Ready works through Google Chrome)

Best Regards,

Leyssa Helgeson
