Centerpiece Competition!
NES FAMILY PROJECT OPPORTUNITY
Knight at the Museum
The NES Sweetheart Committee knows you're out there, just waiting for a chance to flex your creative muscle (and plug in your hot glue gun). In that spirit, we are holding a CENTERPIECE COMPETITION for our upcoming "Knight at the Museum" Sweetheart Dance. Now, we need YOU and your family to get crafty and join in the fun! Here are the competition guidelines:
1. Participation: Any NES student, family member, teacher, staff member, club, group or relative may participate. Centerpieces may be created by individuals, families or by groups of any size and age. You do not need to attend the Sweetheart Dance to participate.
2. Project Guidelines: Centerpieces should be three-dimensional and must be sturdy and able to fit on a NES cafeteria table. Larger pieces can be displayed on the stage. Any material may be used except Latex. Please avoid materials that are sharp or hazardous. Projects can be as simple or complex as you like. All submissions are welcome. The committee reserves the right to remove unsafe materials or inappropriate messaging. (UPDATE: Some folks have asked for maximum size allowances. We kept it open--but as a general guideline, 3 ft high is a good height maximum, and approx 2-3 feet wide. Smaller projects are fine, too! Just consider what will be safe and sturdy on the table top, and have fun!)
3. Theme: The theme of the dance is "Night at the Museum" and your centerpiece should reflect this theme. However, you may interpret the theme as you wish! Maybe you're inspired by the Ben Stiller movie "Night at the Museum" and NYC's Museum of Natural History; or maybe you have a favorite painting, portrait or sculpture. Maybe you like pop art or abstract splatter or Mother Nature, or maybe you're into dinosaur skeletons and meteorites and dioramas. What will the NES art gallery look like? It's up to you!
4. Prizes and Judging: Three fabulous prizes will be awarded, and winners will be determined by majority vote. Attendees at the Sweetheart Dance will be given a ticket to vote for their favorite masterpiece during the event. Winners will be announced by the DJ at the end of the night, and posted by the PTO. Ties will be broken at the discretion of the Sweetheart Dance planning committee.
5. Submission deadline: Centerpieces should be delivered to Carolyn Lavelle or Robin Duchnowski in advance, no later than March 6, 2020. Alternately, arrangements can be made to deliver them directly to the dance during setup.
6. Register to participate HERE (or click the button above).

Frequently Asked Questions
A: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Bring on the pompoms and pipe cleaners!
Q: Does the centerpiece have to be in a certain style (artist, etc.)?
A: You may take your inspiration from anything in a museum—or do something completely original and off-the-wall! Creativity takes many forms.
Q: Can I do this as a creative group project with my Brownie troop?
A: YES! That would be awesome! Group projects are welcomed.
Q: I don’t have a daughter and won’t be attending the Sweetheart Dance. Can I still make a project?
A: Yes, all are welcome to participate!
Q: I'm not crafty but my mother-in-law is. Can she help out with this?
A: YES!
Q: When and where can I drop the centerpiece off?
A: We'd like to collect finished projects the week before the dance, by March 6. We will be happy to make convenient pickup/drop-off arrangements with you. Alternately, they can be dropped off at the dance, but please--no last minute cancellations. Thanks so much for your interest!
Q: What were you thinking size-wise for the centerpieces? How to go big and high, or wide and low? I am brainstorming ideas for the dance.
A: We left the size parameters open, but I think under 3 ft high is a good height max for a tabletop, and no wider than approx 2-3 ft. That’s just an approximation, however—we're more concerned with it being stable and safe (and fabulous!), so please take that into consideration. However, if you make something larger, we can always display it on the stage or on a larger food table. And if you want to do both options, a small tabletop and a larger display as well, we are certainly happy to have more than one entry! Can't wait to see what you make! Thank you!
