Principal Note
Visit from STC Fire Department
Our kindergarten-2nd grade students enjoyed the opportunity to meet a few heroes from our STC Fire Department, including a fire dog and a fire truck. Students received a free water bottle provided by the fire department! In addition, the fire department produced informational videos for students specific to fire safety, and included at home activities you can do with your child to promote fire safety in your home. The flyer, included in today and last week鈥檚 eNews, includes links to the videos and at home activities.
Shoutout to Mrs. Milella鈥檚 4th Grade Class
Mrs. Milella鈥檚 4th grade students have been learning about how to be responsible citizens in their community. The students took action based on their learning, and decided to collect donations for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. This afternoon, 27 boxes of food will be delivered to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The official weight of all food donated was 460 pounds!!! Way to go Mustangs!
Physical Education and Recess
Weather in the months of October and November can be unpredictable. Please send your child to school with a jacket or hooded sweatshirt, which they can wear to PE and recess. We will be outside for PE and recess each day unless there is rain, snow, or other forms of inclement weather. The forecast for next week calls for cooler temperatures, especially early in the morning and later on in the week. A 40-minute PE class can feel like a long time if they are not dressed properly馃槉
13th Avenue Carpool Lane
This is a friendly reminder of the safety protocols put in place to ensure a safe and efficient carpool lane during the arrival/dismissal process.
路 Pull in and out of the lane slowly. I appreciate your extreme caution and care when using the carpool lane. Our little ones can be hard to see.
路 Practice patience with the cars around you.
路 No U-Turns in or out of the carpool lane.
路 Students should enter/exit the vehicle on the sidewalk side.
路 Parents should not get out of their vehicle if at all possible.
路 Pull forward as far as you can in the carpool lane. This allows for maximum efficiency when loading students.
Fall Parties/Volunteers/PTO Event
We are excited to welcome parents into our building for fall parties, which will be held at 2:00 on Friday, October 29th. With there being new volunteer protocols, I want to highlight a few things:
路 Classrooms will be working with room parents to identify party volunteers. Due to health and safety guidelines specific to distancing and room capacities, there will be limits to the number of volunteers permitted per classroom.
路 Any volunteer must show proof of vaccine or a negative COVID test dating back a maximum of 72 hours from the party date/time
I will put out more specific communication next week with regards to fall parties and protocols.
In addition, our amazing PTO is planning a fun, family event for the afternoon/evening of Friday, October 29th. We are still working through a few specific details, but please save the date for the late afternoon/early evening hours of October 29th!
Erin鈥檚 Law
Dear Munhall School Families,
This letter is to inform you about Erin鈥檚 Law (Illinois Public Act 097-1147), an Illinois law passed in February, 2011 that requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for all children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades. Named after sexual abuse survivor Erin Merryn, Erin鈥檚 Law will be implemented again this year in all District 303 Schools. Please note that Erin鈥檚 Law is not connected to The Keeping Youth Safe & Healthy Act (Senate Bill 818).
Between now and the end of the school year, several lessons will be facilitated by Mrs. Gina Rockwell, school social worker, and Mrs. Kati Smith, school psychologist, along with the classroom teacher utilizing the Second Step Child Protection Unit . This age-appropriate instruction will help students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and learn how to respond to unsafe situations. Common themes across all grade levels include:
- Identifying safe touch versus unsafe or unwanted touch
- The Safety Rule About Touching (The Touching Rule): Private areas are not for others to touch, except to keep a child clean and healthy
- Steps to Stay Safe
- Understanding the difference between good and bad secret
For more information about Erin鈥檚 Law, please visit the links below.
