Weekly News from UCLA Lab School - February 7, 2014
Panorama / Interactions in the Ecosystem
Students in Rooms 7 & 8 wrapped up their study of semi-arid ecosystems by creating panoramas that show their knowledge about the interdependence of living organisms in the ecosystem. Students used knowledge they had gained about the land, climate, plants and animals to choose what interactions to depict.

Let's Celebrate Reading Aloud Together
Kick-off Assembly: Friday, Feb. 21, 8:15 a.m.
Pizza Party: Friday, March 14, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Reading aloud to your children helps them to be informed, self-assured, curious and inspired. It also strengthens family bonds and associates reading with pleasure. The Gonda Family Library and the FSA invite you to celebrate the joys and benefits of reading together. From Feb. 21 - March 14, make a commitment to reading aloud to your children at least 20 minutes each day to build a read-aloud habit. We'll get started with a fun kick-off assembly on the Blacktop on Feb. 21. And we'll wrap up the celebration with a Pizza Party in Gregg G. Juárez Community Hall on March 14. Look for more info and resources from the Gonda Family Library at: http://www.labschool.ucla.edu/learning/library.
New & Gently Used Book Drive: From One Reader To Another
Collection bins at Carpool and the Front Office
Join the 8th Annual UCLA Lab School Book Drive, March 3–14, to help stock Magnolia Elementary's new library. The Book Drive offers an opportunity to show our children how we work together to enrich our community and at the same time support literacy. We hope that even our youngest students will be able to contribute a book. Be a caring and sharing reader, and donate a book you love to another reader! Books may be new or gently used, and should be in good condition. No loose bindings, stains, coloring or torn pages, please. Children's books, PreK-Grade 12, are welcome. Note the following exceptions:
* No encyclopedias
* No magazines
* No out-of-date reference materials
* No toys
We will also have collection bins at the Family Read-Aloud celebration on March 14, so clear those bookshelves and bring your books with you!

FSA Gently Used Clothing Drive
The FSA is building on the donation of lost and found clothing by organizing a gently-used clothing drive to benefit children and adults. The primary recipients will be families in need at LAUSD's Magnolia Elementary School and also students at UCLA who are homeless and/or facing severe financial difficulties. The donations for UCLA students will be coordinated with St. Albans Episcopal Church on Hilgard Ave. The UCLA students are most in need of job interview clothing for men and women -- blazers, suits, ties, skirts, blouses and nice, gently-used or new shoes. Please hold on to those items when you're cleaning out your closets. We'll be collecting the clothes in April, after Spring break. If you have questions or would like to help with the collection, please email Christine Kim at email@example.com or Eva Karelsen at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Hammer Conversations | Paternal Instinct
Feb. 11, 7:30 p.m. (Hammer Museum)
The positive effects that committed and involved fathers have on children’s health and well-being are indisputable. Less well known is the neurobiological impact of raising children on the fathers themselves. Discussing the compelling subject of fatherhood are guests Dr. Ruth Feldman, a psychology professor at Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Dr. Kyle D. Pruett, a professor of child psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. They examine the neurobiological aspects of fatherhood, as well as the individual and collective impact of paternal involvement. Info: http://hammer.ucla.edu/programs/detail/program_id/2087
