A WEEK OF HOLIDAY FUN!
Enjoy the pictures of our week in review! Remember to click on them to enlarge. I am sending all of you my deepest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year! Ginny
German Farm
Long ago, German children were in charge of collecting kindle. They had to wear a basket on their back that was as big as they were! Don't come back until the basket is full!!
Not Father Christmas!
The Bellsnikler wore a scary mask and brought switches for the children who did not behave! Tradition has it that he visited on Dec. 6th and again closer to Christmas, so that children had time to change their behavior!! :D
Who got the Warm Bed??
The oldest people in the German household, usually grandparents, slept in the warmest room beside the wood furnace. The children slept upstairs, and shared beds with their siblings to help stay warm in the cold of winter!
The American Farm
Gathered in the parlor, this home belonged to a family that really lived in the Shenandoah Valley. This room was used to entertain when guests arrived- we were the guests! We listen to the original version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.
In the Barn
Again, children of long ago had many chores. The children had to feed the animals, collect eggs and sweep the barns. They worked from morning until night to get their chores done.
The Holidays
The family decorated branches in a vase, not a whole tree, during the holidays. The decorations were homemade cookies and wooden ornaments. Oh, the simpler days!!
American Farm
Our class had to feed the sheep! Watch out for the ram!!
German Farm
We helped decorate the tree with homemade cookies that smelled like cinnamon! MMmm!
German Farm
The cows on the German farm were used for milk and work. They were not usually used for meat. We had to watch out when this pretty girl sneezed right in front of us! Oh, my!!
The English Farm
Dressed in costumes and carrying punch, we knocked at the door of the English home owners.
Caroling!
Once we started singing "Deck the Halls" the door opened and we were invited inside to warm up and share inthe punch!
Minced Meat Pie!
In the dark kitchen of the English farm house, we were told how the pie shell of minced meat pie was used over and over again! Once the meat and vegetables were eaten out of the center, it was refilled, cooked, and eaten again!
Kid's Quote of the Week!
"I am NOT on the naughty list!"
:D
