Fork Shoals Library Ledger
News for the week of September 30th
It's Book Fair Week!
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair.
Book Fair Dates: Monday, September 30-Friday, October 4, 2013
Shopping Hours:
· September 30 – 8am-6:30pm
· October 1-3 – 8am-3pm
· October 4 – 8-11am
If you’re all booked up during Book Fair week, be sure to visit the Book Fair online at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/forkshoalselemsch. Our Online Fair is available for an extended time from September 21st to October 11th.
*We accept cash, checks (made payable to Fork Shoals School), and all major credit/debit cards. 6% sales tax is added to all purchases. All sales are final.*

Greenville Reading Warriors Program
Each participating student will use a reading log to keep track of their success. Upon completion, the reading log should be returned to Ms. Knight in the library by October 31st.
Students are also encouraged to take part in a book drive on the night of the celebration game. If they bring five or more children's books to donate, they'll receive a buy one get one free ticket voucher. Donated books will be given to the "Friends of the Library" and sold and their annual book sale. All proceeds from the book sale will benefit the Greenville County Library System.
Teacher incentive: If 50% of a class completes this reading program, the teacher will be rewarded with a free ticket to the Reading Warriors Game Night Event!
Reading Challenge update
This nine weeks, students will have the option to read 30 books OR 500 pages. (It may be difficult for older students to read 30 books and still challenge themselves to read "meatier" fare.) Next quarter, K5-2nd grade students will still try to read 30 books (or more), and 3rd-5th grade students will have a quarterly goal of 500 pages.
To print a copy of this quarter's reading challenge sheet, go to http://forkshoalsreads.blog.greenville.k12.sc.us/files/2013/08/1st_quarter_book_challenge.pdf.
Book of the Week: Chloe and the Lion
Chloe and the Lion is a nominee for the 13-14 South Carolina Picture Book Award.
Chloe and the Lion is not your ordinary children's picture book. This laugh-out-loud romp is probably more fun for adult readers than it is for kids. (Even the "about the author" section on the back flap is funny.) The book invites readers into the world of actually creating a story and the many ups and downs, twists and turns that may go with it.
Author Mac Barnett and illustrator Adam Rex have created something truly spectacular in this book. The words and pictures--though often at war (in a hilarious way, of course)--mesh together seamlessly, and the entire book will keep readers of all ages engaged. I loved it and plan to give it as a gift to several people in my family and school.
Chloe and the Lion is a welcome addition to any book collection!
