Preparing for college & career - November Issue

Begin Earning Scholarships in 9th grade through

Rather than waiting until the end of high school to earn scholarships, enables students to earn scholarships throughout high school, starting as early as 9th grade, for doing all the things that best prepare them to succeed, whether that’s getting good grades, volunteering in the community or joining an extracurricular. Wednesday, Dec. 6th, 6-8pm

LaFollette High School

Open to all students. Junior students and their parent/guardian strongly encouraged to attend. We will begin the evening w/ a short presentation - College 101 (college timeline, how to be a competitive college applicant, and how to prepare for campus tours). Families will choose 2 of the following Breakout Sessions to attend:

  • WI Private colleges
  • UW Systems
  • UW Colleges
  • Madison College
  • Military
  • Apprenticeships

AFS Project Change

Tell us your idea for a volunteer project that could have a meaningful impact abroad. Get votes from your family and friends on your idea, and you could win a full scholarship to go abroad for 10-15 days and make your vision come to life!. All U.S. 8th to 12th grade students are eligible to enter. Learn more here

Students who complete their application for admission to the Twin Cities campus are invited to participate in the U of M Share My App Program

  • Apply for admission at one or more additional campuses of the University of Minnesota system with no additional application and for FREE

Senior Conferences are wrapping up!

Counselors encourage all seniors to have their college applications COMPLETED by Thanksgiving. Please check in w/ your student to see where they are at in the process. If they havent had their senior mtg yet, they should get on their counselor's schedule ASAP!

Visit a UW Campus this month!

Many universities are holding campus visit events this month. A visit is one of the best ways to see if a college is a good fit for you. Don't miss out - carpool w/ a friend, visit a LHS alumni, work a visit into a family vacation.

Wrap up your college applications NOW!! At a minimum, colleges need the following:

SENIORS & School Email

Seniors: Do not use school email for ANY matters related to life after high school.

Examples: college apps, parchment account, ACT, FAFSA

**School Email becomes inaccessible to graduates 2 wks after graduation

College Reps coming to La Follette!!!

Open to all students. Juniors & Seniors STRONGLY encouraged to meet with college reps to hear first hand about what various colleges have to offer.

ACT Test Information

Next ACT Test Date: February 10th, 2018

Regular Registration Deadline: January 12th, 2018

Late Registration Deadline(Late Fee Required): January 19th, 2018

  • Log into Career Cruising, click on "My Plan" then "Method Test Prep" to get ready for the test.
  • During sign-up, don't forget to choose 4 FREE destinations for your test scores.
  • Check the location
  • If you receive free/reduced lunch, see your counselor before signing up.
  • Create an account, retake the test, send your scores. Instructions here
11th & 12th Grade College Bound Athletes & NCAA

Students who plan to participate in Division I or II collegiate athletics during college, must complete an NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse form. Students should register at the end of their junior year, work with their counselor and coach.
