Sacajawea's Childhood
In 1788, Sacagawea was born in a Shoshone Indian camp. Sacagawea did not go to school she worked in fields and picked berries when she was little. Next,when she was 10 years old she was captured and taken more than 800 miles away. When Sacagawea was 15 she married Toussaint Charbonneau. Since Charbonneau knew how to speak many different languages Lewis and Clark asked them to join them on the Corps of Discovery.To go along with that they accepted their offer and set off in 1804. About midway on the journey Sacagawea had a baby boy and named him Pomp. Many years later after the Corps of Discovery, Sacagawea became ill and died on December,14,1812.
Why Sacajawea is Famous
First, Sacagawea is very famous for being the only woman to go on the Corps of Discovery with Lewis and Clark. Only Sacagawea knew how to speak Shoshone on the Corps of Discovery that came in handy when they needed to talk to Shoshone people.Third, Sacagawea is also famous because when the food got low and the men were coming back empty handed after hunting Sacagawea dug up some roots to feed the hungry men. Without Sacagawea's
help
they would have never made it through the mountains.How were they supposed to get horses withoutSacagawea?
