The risks of Vaping
On December 6, all PSHS Winter Student Athletes learned of the risks associated with e-cigarette usage, commonly referred to as "vaping". This is a trend that is on the rise throughout the country among middle and high school aged students. Administration and coaches want their athletes to get educated to make good decision and to be able to hold their teammates accountable.

Nursing Home Visits
This Tuesday, Mrs. DeSantis' 5th grade class had the first of a series of nursing home visits as part of their 2018-2019 service project. The students got to know the residents by chatting with them, and then having a fun game of Bingo and trivia. Students wrote about the visit before they left, anticipating any challenges that they would face. All were pleasantly surprised with how fun and rewarding it was. It helped that the residents could barely contain their excitement at having these energetic kids visit and heaped the fifth graders with compliments! The students will travel to the nursing home again in February, April and June.

Focus on the Environment
Mrs. Frare’s A.P. Environmental Science students and Mr. Buckley’s A.P Chemistry Students toured the dam removal project in downtown Plymouth. In conjunction with Mass Audobaun, NOAA and BWET grant students rotated through different stations where biologists and local environmental law enforcement officers spoke about the project.
Students learned about the history of local watersheds and their importance to the town's biodiversity and economy. Topics such as population dynamics, water quality, tagging techniques and STEM career opportunities were covered at the stations. Students were able to see the project firsthand while interacting with scientists and project management.
The students in Mr. Odell’s freshman biology class have developed an ongoing project to monitor gas exchange in a sealed terrarium. Students planned and designed the enclosed ecosystem and are recording its development by means of CO2 and O2 probes. The reactants and products of photosynthesis can be observed in their day/night cycle on the computer screen!
Students in Mrs. Rozak’s Biomedical Innovations class have taken a turn towards studying the environment. The students are trying to find out what chemicals may be present in the fictitious “Williams family’s” well! The students performed a variety of chemical tests on the water, what will they find?

Linear Equations in the real world
Officer Miranda gives her explanation of how linear equations are used in reference to speeding tickets. Officer Miranda visited a few of Jeremy Adelmann's classes to discuss the linear equation and its relationship to speeding tickets between how fast the driver is going the cost of the speeding ticket. It was also an opportunity for students to get to know Officer Miranda.
