The risks of Vaping

On December 6, all PSHS Winter Student Athletes learned of the risks associated with e-cigarette usage, commonly referred to as "vaping". This is a trend that is on the rise throughout the country among middle and high school aged students. Administration and coaches want their athletes to get educated to make good decision and to be able to hold their teammates accountable.

Holiday Cheer

Another great week at the preschool! Students are getting very excited as Christmas draws near. Miss Meaghan’s class put together gingerbread puzzles, dressed up as elves and enjoyed light play with pretend candles. Miss Jamie’s class made gingerbread art and worked on gross and fine motor skills as they rode on scooter boards and put ornaments on small Christmas trees.

A visit from the Dolphin and Whale Conservatory

Our 2nd and 4th graders had a great time learning about whales from representatives of the Dolphin and Whale Conservatory in Plymouth. The real highlight was touching real whale baleen and venturing inside a life-size inflatable right whale. Many thanks to our PTA for organizing such a fun and informative assembly for our students!

Nursing Home Visits

This Tuesday, Mrs. DeSantis' 5th grade class had the first of a series of nursing home visits as part of their 2018-2019 service project. The students got to know the residents by chatting with them, and then having a fun game of Bingo and trivia. Students wrote about the visit before they left, anticipating any challenges that they would face. All were pleasantly surprised with how fun and rewarding it was. It helped that the residents could barely contain their excitement at having these energetic kids visit and heaped the fifth graders with compliments! The students will travel to the nursing home again in February, April and June.

Virtual Learning Experiences

PCIS students are using virtual reality goggles to enhance their learning and understanding of topics studied in class. Mr. Powers health class used the VR glasses to tour the heart and discuss how their nutritional choices affect heart. Mrs. Lincoln's Ancient Civilizations class went to Egypt to tour the Great Pyramids of Giza. This is a fun way to enhance what our students are learning everyday.

Using Design Media

7th-grade students created Adobe Spark videos and Canva infographics to demonstrate their knowledge in science. Students self-selected one environmental issue that has been impacted by human population growth to research individually. Based on their research, they developed a research question, established the problem, and relayed the information through graphs and text. Additionally, they identified one solution that can mitigate or reverse the issue. Students worked hard to engage their literacy, technology, and science skills!

Holiday Auctions for Those in Need

Students in grades 6 & 7 recently participated in holiday auctions to raise money to support local charities and families in need. Team members donated gently used or unopened items that were then auctioned off to the highest bidder. After the proceeds were tallied, students worked together to decide how to distribute the funds.

PSMS Honors Celebration

Students were joined by proud family members at the PSMS Honors Celebration held on Wednesday. Students were recognized for accomplishments in areas including academics, leadership, and community building during the first term of the year. PSHS seniors Jordan Colbert, Emily Kunkle, and Joe McGonagle were featured speakers who shared words of encouragement and advice with the honorees.

Focus on the Environment

Mrs. Frare’s A.P. Environmental Science students and Mr. Buckley’s A.P Chemistry Students toured the dam removal project in downtown Plymouth. In conjunction with Mass Audobaun, NOAA and BWET grant students rotated through different stations where biologists and local environmental law enforcement officers spoke about the project.

Students learned about the history of local watersheds and their importance to the town's biodiversity and economy. Topics such as population dynamics, water quality, tagging techniques and STEM career opportunities were covered at the stations. Students were able to see the project firsthand while interacting with scientists and project management.

The students in Mr. Odell’s freshman biology class have developed an ongoing project to monitor gas exchange in a sealed terrarium. Students planned and designed the enclosed ecosystem and are recording its development by means of CO2 and O2 probes. The reactants and products of photosynthesis can be observed in their day/night cycle on the computer screen!

Students in Mrs. Rozak’s Biomedical Innovations class have taken a turn towards studying the environment. The students are trying to find out what chemicals may be present in the fictitious “Williams family’s” well! The students performed a variety of chemical tests on the water, what will they find?
