A Look At This Week
We ended our week by reading and learning about Dr. Martin Luther King. We discussed how he wanted people to treat each other with kindness. Each child wrote their own dream for our world and how we can show kindness. Throughout the week, the kindergarteners learned a song about Martin Luther King that will be on the announcements next week. Ask your child to sing it for you.
Reading and writing skills we focused on this week:
- This week, I introduced the -en, -eg, -ed, and -eck word families. As you read with your children and come across words with these word families in them, have your child identify the word family and work on blending the sounds together to decode the words.
- Our two new sight words this week were my and your.
- In reading this week, we read together "What lives in the Arctic?" The children cleaned out their book boxes this week and brought home all of their books from quarter 2. Please keep these and encourage your child to read them from time to time.
- In reading, we also continued to discuss the parts of the story. As we read, we identified the characters, setting, problem and solution.
- In writing, we began our informational writing unit. The kids chose one "super topic". This is a topic they know a lot about and something they can teach others. Next week we will begin writing our books.
Math skills we focused on this week:
- Practiced calendar skills.
- Practiced counting by 1's and 10's.
- Continued our study of measurement. We measured various objects around the classroom and compared them using the terms greater than, less than, and equal to.
- Worked on simple word problems and writing a number sentence to represent the problem.
