Fitness
Walking: Are you finding that it is too cold or slippery outside to walk? Walkers are welcome to use IGEMs hallways at times students are not present. There isn't a charge! Call Jill Allen at 608-943-6311 extension 1054 for details about walking.
Fitness Room: The Iowa-Grant School District offers the general public access to our fitness center at IGEMs. A modest yearly fee of $20 will be used to help maintain the equipment. Since we want everyone to be safe and have an enjoyable experience their is a waiver that must be signed that spells out the expectations and terms. Please contact Lois Peart, Health and PE Instructor 608-943-8161 EX 2031 or lpeart@igs.k12.wi.us for more information.
CrisisGo
CrisisGo is a safety app which was recently installed on most teacher computers and mobile devices in the district. CrisisGo will:
Quickly notify all staff of a lockdown or serious situation with an audible tone and escalate the emergency message immediately to law enforcement to provide the fastest method of getting responders to the district during an emergency.
Improve communication during an incident using the built-in two-way communication feature.
Provide safety tools and information to make every staff member better prepared to assess, prevent, and respond to serious incidents.
During the month of February we will continue to train and familiarize all district employees with the app. We will eventually offer the opportunity for parents to install the app on their phones and there is a student app called Safe2SpeakUP. We believe CrisisGo will bring another level of confidence regarding our ability to respond to emergencies and keep our students and staff safe.
What to do if Stranded in Winter Weather
Staying in your vehicle when stranded is often the safest choice if winter storms create poor visibility or if roadways are ice covered.
These steps will increase your safety when stranded:
Tie a brightly colored cloth to the antenna as a signal to rescuers and raise the hood of the car (if it is not snowing).
Move anything you need from the trunk into the passenger area.
Wrap your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing, blankets, or newspapers.
Stay awake. You will be less vulnerable to cold-related health problems.
Run the motor (and heater) for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly to let in air. Make sure that snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe—this will reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
As you sit, keep moving your arms and legs to improve your circulation and stay warmer.
Do not eat unmelted snow because it will lower your body temperature.
Huddle with other people for warmth.
Be Cautious About Travel
Listen for radio or television reports of travel advisories issued by the National Weather Service.
Do not travel in low visibility conditions.
Avoid traveling on ice-covered roads, overpasses, and bridges if at all possible.
If you must travel by car, use tire chains and take a mobile phone with you.
If you must travel, let someone know your destination and when you expect to arrive. Ask them to notify authorities if you are late.
Check and restock the winter emergency supplies in your car before you leave.
Never pour water on your windshield to remove ice or snow; shattering may occur.
Don’t rely on a car to provide sufficient heat; the car may break down.
Always carry additional warm clothing appropriate for the winter conditions.

Olivia L named Panther Pawesome and joins the 1,000 Point Club
Her coaches agree that Liv is one athlete and teammate they are glad they don't have to compete against. We are fortunate to have her as a Panther! She is a quiet team leader and usually her actions speak for her leadership. She is driven to stay focused on doing well both academically and on the court. In fact, this is a personal goal she makes each year. She is a well-rounded player and contributes to the team by taking on any role needed. Mrs. Simon added that as a coach of hers you can count on Olivia to play with focus and determination.
To be recognized in the Panther Pawesome profile is an extremely well deserved honor for Livvy not only as an athlete, but as a student here as well. She is an awesome young lady who brings a quiet level of confidence, pride, and commitment to anything she is involved in. She is a top notch student athlete who leads by example. She is serves on Student Council and volunteers her time to make our school a better place. Her talent, dedication, desire, work ethic, and humble attitude are not only displayed on the court or playing field, but are replicated in the classroom, where she goes above and beyond most expectations that teachers set. It is students like Livvy that make a teacher’s job much more enjoyable, fun, and stress-free!
Her willingness to go the extra mile, set the bar high for herself, and put in the extra effort and needed time will not only pave her way to success in athletics beyond high school, but will also build the foundation for her to create, follow, and achieve any goal, dream, or accomplishment she so desires as her educational path continues beyond Iowa-Grant.
It is truly amazing to realize that there have only been two other individuals who have attained such an honor scoring a 1,000 points here at Iowa-Grant. How unbelievable is that? When you consider the number of athletes, male and female, who have stepped onto the basketball court in a Panther jersey, it’s phenomenal! Livvy scoring her 1,000th point on Tuesday night was a monumental moment here at I-G and is one that will be thought about and treasured for many years to come. Her overall athletic ability and personal standards have resulted in many, many awards over the years not only in basketball, but also volleyball and softball. We are all looking forward to the next year and a half as those accolades and accomplishments in all sports, hit even higher levels. We wish her good health and great memories as she continues her high school career. Thank you Olivia, for being Panther Pawesome and letting us celebrate you!
Regional Academic Decathlon Contest
On Friday, January 11, nine Iowa-Grant students competed in the Regional Academic Decathlon contest at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.
Decathletes take multiple choice tests in art, music, social science, science, economics, literature, and mathematics. They also have to write an essay, prepare a speech, and sit down for a seven minute interview.
Even though Iowa-Grant was the smallest school in attendance, we won several awards. Annie S. was 3rd place in speech and 2nd place in interview. Nathan D. was 1st place in speech. Brylie W was 3rd place in interview. Way to go, Panthers!!
Annual Honors Choir
On Saturday, January 26, three IGHS students joined other talented high school choir students from our conference for the annual SWAL Honors Choir. These students receive a selection of challenging music and spend just a few days preparing for a performance. They also get to work with other choir teachers from the conference as well as a distinguished guest director. They put on an excellent concert on Saturday afternoon!

THE GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE AT IGEMS
SAFETY REMINDERS:
Students who are not riding the school bus and instead are dropped off by a family member or friend prior to the start of the school day, should use the Cafeteria Doors in the back of the school, rather than at the main doors in the front of the building. The doors will be open and students are able to wait comfortably with staff supervision in the cafeteria. Thank you for your cooperation!
On Late Start days, IGEMS does not serve breakfast. Please make sure your students eat breakfast at home on Late Start days.
Also on Late Start days, our Back Doors (used for morning drop off) are locked until 9:30 am. If you drop off students at any door, please make sure they can enter the building before you leave. If there are problems, the main entrance by the IGEMS office should be open.
