A Minute with the LASes...

Comprehension for ELLs

We all know that comprehension is vital for learning, and it is supported by the development of other skills learned since Kindergarten. To be able to comprehend, our students need phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency and vocabulary. Beyond the development of these skills, it is important that the students continually practice:

  • Making connections

  • Asking questions

  • Inferring

  • Visualizing

  • Determining the importance of ideas

  • Synthesizing information within and across texts

  • Monitoring their own comprehension

When we have newcomers or students with limited language abilities, the use of visuals, graphic organizers, prompt response, sentence stems, sticky notes, reading journals and partner accountability (echo-read, invent a story from pictures, act out, retell, coach each other, etc) are strategies that can really help with students’ comprehension.

We also have brand new “Literacy Backpacks” to be checked out through our Bil/ESL library (P-10). There are 10 different themes and they include books, manipulates, picture cards, and more!

Family STEM NIght

Our first family STEM Night will be this Thursday, April 20, 2017 from 6:00-7:30 PM. We could use as many activity facilitators as we can get to make our first STEM Night a GREAT success! We would love to have at least two volunteers per grade level to facilitate activities. The more, the merrier! We will be having, math, science, and technology activities that integrate some engineering aspects. Please sign up in the the Google Sheet link.

As always, thank you for all of your support. We greatly appreciate it. : )

If you are facilitating an activity, Mrs. Valdes will provide a light dinner after school. : D

Flyers informing parents about STEM Night were placed in your mailbox to go home last Thursday, or to be sent home Tuesday, April 18th. Thank you for promoting this event with your students.
