A Thought or Two from Mr. Nieslanik
I wanted to highlight a question that a parent asked me during Back-to-School Night. The Parent asked me to clarify the N/A mark that shows up as a "grade", instead of a letter grade, in some classes on parentvue. The N/A does not mean the teacher has not graded any work.Teachers have the choice to not put a summary grade in their grade book until the end of the grading period. To follow the individual assignments and what has been turned in and scored just click on the N/A and it will take you into the grade book. You can also toggle between both standards and assignment view within the grade book. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask the individual teacher, your child's counselor, or an administrator.
Thank you to the army of volunteers who helped at the Southridge Spectacle, at the Homecoming dance, and all the Homecoming events this past week. There is no way we could have carried out these events without parent support. The legions of adults who support our work at Southridge High School is much appreciated.
Until next time,
David
2016-17 School & District Report Cards
School and district report cards for the 2016-17 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). I welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. Given the recent passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the expiration of Oregon's ESEA flexibility waiver on August 1, 2016, the State of Oregon will not assign an overall rating to schools for the 2016-17 school year. Our school ratings in the areas of student achievement and student growth on state assessments and graduation rates are available in our Report Card Rating Detail Sheet at the link above.

PATH TO SCHOLORSHIPS
Path to Scholarships is a program that supports traditionally underserved students who are interested in writing a compelling scholarship application essay as part of their overall college planning process.
In Beaverton, Path to Scholarships is offered through the Multilingual Dept. and the Indian Education Dept. as a way to specifically support active and monitored ELL, Native American, and Migrant students in grades 9 through 12.
We will help students use their experience, cultural gifts, and heritage to create the ideal essay for college scholarships. Telling their story can help make financing our students’ college-going dreams a reality.
Our support includes a one-day presentation and workshop in addition to a follow-up evening workshop. During the one-day session, students will:
Write a first-draft of their Winning Scholarship Essay.
Learn how to use our College & Scholarship Planning Guide.
Create a college application portfolio.
Date: Saturday, October 28, 2017
Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm
Location: Multilingual Department at the Capitol Center

SENIORS & FAFSA/ORSAA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that is prepared annually by prospective college and career school students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.
The ORSAA is an alternative to the FAFSA for undocumented Oregon students, including students who have DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status.
This week, our senior students were introduced to a FAFSA/ORSAA competition where two advisories are matched up against each other. Whichever advisory has the most FAFSA/ORSAA completions by Thanksgiving will win a 'catered breakfast'. A portion of FAFSA/ORSAA is for the student to complete but a portion is for the parent/guardian. Please ask your senior about this and set aside time in the near future to complete the appropriate application. Our goal for this year is 100% completion rate for our Southridge seniors.
Why every senior should complete a FAFSA or ORSAA:
- FAFSA/ORSAA determines a student's eligibility for federal funds for post high school education.
- Eligibility criteria has changed. Students who might not have qualified in the past could be eligible now.
- Even if a student will not qualify for federal funds, they could be awarded funds from other sources. To have access to these funds, a student must complete a FAFSA/ORSAA.
- Many colleges (or businesses) will award funds to students that have been determined as ineligible for federal funds.

BEF Phone-a-thon, Oct. 17-26
Between October 17-26, hundreds of high school students and community volunteers will telephone Beaverton residents during the Beaverton Education Foundation’s annual Phone-a-thon, requesting donations to fund critical summer, classroom, and after-school programs across our District.
Last school year Beaverton Education Foundation’s 3000 donors helped fund programs at 50 of the 51 schools benefiting over 26,000 students. The BEF’s goal is to fund programs at all 53 Beaverton schools this year. Your financial support of BEF is vital and ensures that thousands of students benefit from these important hands-on projects and programs.
Costs of our phone-a-thon are underwritten by our generous sponsors, so that your tax-deductible donation can help more Beaverton kids. BEF wishes to thank them for their support.
