When can students visit the Media Center?
The CMS Media Center is open daily from 7:30 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. Students may visit during the following times to check out materials or use computers:
- Before school
- After school
- During a passing period (the student is responsible for still getting to class on time!)
- During class (either with the teacher or by using a pass)
- During Core Plus time (with a pass)
Please note that the Makerspace is reserved for class use and is not open throughout the day at this time.
Circulation Policies
Students may check out up to 8 books, magazines, and audiobooks (1 audiobook at a time, please) from the CMS Media Center.
- Books may be checked out for up to three weeks
- Magazines may be checked out for up to one week
- Audiobooks may be checked out for up to three weeks
Library materials may be renewed one time. Students should visit the circulation desk to do this.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that his/her materials are returned on time. Students with overdue items may not check out until the overdue item is returned. Classes do not visit every week like in elementary school, so students should keep up on materials' due dates. Students may visit the Media Center during the times listed in the previous section if they are unsure when materials are due. Returns can be made any time throughout the day by using the hallway book return.
The Book Fair Is Coming to CMS!
Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA)
Each year, CMS participates in the Young Hoosier Book Award (YHBA) program. This Indiana reading program offers 20 nominees, all decided on by a panel of librarians. The nominees vary in genre, length, and complexity, so there truly is something for every reader on the list. The program culminates each May when students vote for the winner. All of the YHBA nominees have a neon green sticker with an Indiana background that says "17-18" on the top of the spine. The Carmel Clay Public Library also has a section for the YHBA nominees, including eBooks and downloadable audiobooks.
For each YHBA book read (or listened to - audiobooks count!), students should scan the QR code in the back of the book and fill out the evaluation form. Students with 5 or ore nominees read will have the chance to vote for the overall winner at the end of the year.
Prizes are awarded for students who read the 5, 10, 15, and 20 book milestones. Students can also help their team enjoy a celebration at the end of the year - the team with the highest average number of 17-18 nominees read wins!
