Oakhurst Elementary
March 25, 2021
From the Principal
Last week we were once again faced with the reality of the presence of racism that continues to plague our nation, state, and area. Asian Americans in and around the Atlanta area were victims on March 16, 2021 when eight innocent people, six of them Asian women were killed in massage parlors. The Oakhurst staff wants to acknowledge our disgust with such hate crimes and stand in support of the Asian community. We will continue to celebrate and appreciate the diversity of our community. This is another reminder of the importance of our equity work in CSD and at Oakhurst.
Here are some resources you might find helpful:
Staff, caretakers, and students can contact the Department of Equity and Student Support with concerns regarding discrimination and/or harassment.
If a student or staff member appears to be having more difficulty with their feelings than might be expected, or, if you could use additional support yourself, please contact a school administrator, counselor, or other support personnel.
CSD employees are also encouraged to use the services provided through our Employee Assistance Program.
If you would like outside information or support please visit the following resources on our Equity website:
Asian-American Harassment related to the COVID-19 Outbreak (*currently links to a resource page on the Equity & Student Support site)
The Coalition to Support Grieving Students - The Coalition’s purpose is to create and share a set of free, industry-endorsed resources that will empower school communities across America in the ongoing support of grieving students.
Addressing Anti-Asian Violence and Bias - These resources help teachers discuss the historical precedents for this moment, introduce ways for students to recognize and speak up against coronavirus racism, and start conversations with even the youngest learners about recognizing and acting to address injustice.
For even more equity-related information, visit the following resources on our Equity Website.
Next Phase of Learning beginning April 12th, 2021
This week, we contacted all families to provide specific details such as teacher assignment and class size for students in both settings. We are excited to add more students to in-person learning and also really excited about the decrease in size for our virtual classes. If your child is slated to begin in person, you will receive more information such as arrival and dismissal procedures, as well as what materials your child should bring. It is vital that all learning materials and supplies be brought to school on the first day. These materials will be necessary to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. If you have questions about what to bring, please reach out to your child's teacher.

It’s Oakhurst Yearbook Time!!
This is certainly a year to remember! Please help us create a meaningful remembrance by supporting the 2020-2021 Oakhurst Yearbook in the following ways:
PAY FOR YEARBOOKS:
Books will be ordered for EVERY student and staff member, but to cover the cost, we need your help. Pay online at https://oakhurstelementarypta.org/. Go to “Store” then click the “Yearbook” link. There are options on the Yearbook Store page for Yearbook and Dedication payments, as well as to make an optional donation.
PURCHASE A DEDICATION ($10 each for SECOND-GRADE families only):
A yearbook dedication is the perfect way to say something special to your second-grader as they prepare to move up from Oakhurst. Each dedication will be approximately 1/10th of a page and will consist of a photo (that you provide) and up to 50 words or 260 characters. Order your dedication at the Yearbook payment site: https://oakhurstelementarypta.org/. Go to “Store” then click the “Yearbook” link. DEADLINE FOR DEDICATIONS is APRIL 2!
GET YOUR PICTURES IN THE YEARBOOK!
If your child did not have an individual portrait taken by the school photographer, please send a photo of your child that we can use on their classroom page!
Also, if you have photos of school activities (virtual learning activities, first day of in-person school, playing with friends safely, etc.) that you would like to have considered for inclusion in the yearbook, email them to oakhurstyearbook@gmail.com or send a link to a shared folder that we can access. Please send no more than 4 photos per student and include the names and grade levels of students pictured in the photos. Photos will be accepted through April 2.
Note: The Yearbook Staff will review all photos and determine final yearbook content. We cannot guarantee that all submissions can be used in the book.
Please contact the yearbook team with any questions at oakhurstyearbook@gmail.com. Thank you!

From City Schools of Decatur
The Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) has stated that all in-person learners are required to participate in the Georgia Milestones Assessment System test (GMAS), and schools must offer the opportunity for virtual learners to take the GMAS in person. We will extend the same opportunity for K-2 students regarding the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test.
Only families whose students are learning 100% virtually will be allowed to decline testing due to the COVID pandemic. Surveys to indicate your testing decision will be available to the parents/guardians of virtual learners in Infinite Campus on March 29 for students grades K-5 and April 12th for students grades 6-12.
Please join us on zoom for a question and answer session about the Georgia Milestones and MAP administration for families that have chosen virtual instruction.
