Emerging Proficient, Initial Visit October 8, 2014
Language of Day Activities
- Choices are read room, routines, journal, read-a-louds, DEAR time
- Last about 5-10 minutes
- M, W, F are Spanish days in the building, T, Th are English days
- Read room in sections, students at desk, listen & repeat, not a teachable time, this is for development of vocabulary
- Lots of labels around room in both languages
- Create a LOD Activity Board, one side Spanish, the other English
- Read the room, goes from words to simple sentences, once words are mastered have students use the word in a sentence, you write it and place it by word
- Student generated alphabets, at mid year students draw picture, tell you the word and sentence. Teacher writes the letter, word, & sentence on the student generated alphabet.
- Room is labeled according to grade level knowledge, kinder should not look like 1st, 1st should not look like 2nd
- LOD journal color does not matter, this is not for academic do not grade, students generate sentences with LOD words from walls
- LOD words may have pictures beside the word
Word Walls
- Should have 60-90 words on wall by now
- Put high frequency words on word wall, words misspelled in their writing
- Put accents on words correctly
- Model writing for young students to allow copying, then move them to writing on their own using the word wall
Bilingual Pairs
- Code bilingual pairs with red or blue dot to determine student with strength in each language
- Must have a reading and writing piece at every bilingual center
- A minimum of 3 activities in English and 3 in Spanish at each center
- Directions must be on every activity, this promotes reading directions
Campus Elements
- Campus labeling in both languages
- Equitable library in both languages
- Language of Day used by all areas of campus
Authentic Student Learning
- More student generated work rather than worksheets
- Student generated work allows for more practice of writing
- Student journal writing should happen every day, begin to use the phrase Reflect on Lesson
- Reflective journal writing, should be 2 pages, teacher on left side, student on right side
- In group learning time, check comprehension of students by allowing them to answer, however first have them talk to partner they are sitting by, share with your partner, then ask for their responses
- Journal writings were underdeveloped, and need to occur daily
- Students date page in journal daily
- Must have writing in both English and Spanish in journals and student learning displayed around room
