Dear Cardinal Family,

"I think the cruise ship is in port."

Facebook was buzzing the last few days. And just by me typing those words, you know it was mostly a group of adults over 40.

One evening this week, we had a trove of alumni descend on TWHS. The idea that their old school building had a lifespan shortening by the day brought them here. We were expecting 50 people; we had somewhere between 300 and 500 alumni show up. As you can imagine, it's impossible to lead a tour of that size. So we pivoted and turned into an open house! The alumni were all over the building, visiting their favorite spaces, and reminiscing with former classmates about their memories, classes, old flings, former teachers, and more. Questions and comments abounded, like, "When did the gyms move?" and "This was Mr. Rousculp's room!" and "These bathrooms are still terrible."

What seemed like another night of work for me turned out to be a pretty cool experience. The love for this place was on full display. The years of hard work (both our staff's and students'!) and rich learning experiences in this building were evident. Our visitors also seemed genuinely impressed with what the new building will be, too, so it wasn't all nostalgia.

So, if you've noticed an alumni buzz on Facebook recently, you know why. When our Dean of Students pulled up the camera footage the next day, he said, "All of a sudden a wave of people came into Door 16. It was like a cruise ship just came into port." It's true. We had some very dedicated and passionate tourists who loved exploring their history.

I hope you have a great weekend and Go Cards!

Sincerely,

Pete Scully

Principal

*State-Required Ohio State Tests for Spring 2023* - Please Read

Dear Thomas Worthington High School Families,

Starting Monday, April 17th, Thomas Worthington High School will administer state-required end-of-course assessments to all students enrolled or needing to retake English Language Arts II (English 10), Math I, Math II, Biology, U.S. History, and U.S. Government.

In order to provide focused time and attention to students who are testing, we will be on an altered bell schedule Monday - Friday next week (April 17 - 21). Students enrolled in tested subjects are required to report to school at their regular time of 8:40 a.m. for testing; we will use a delayed start of school for any student who is not testing. Lunch will be served following the testing period, and classes will begin at 12:25 p.m. If your child is testing on at least one of these days, test-specific information will be shared with students and their families in a few weeks.

Buses will run their regular morning routes for students involved in testing and a second route 90 minutes ( 1 hour 30 minutes) later for non-testers. All buses will run on a regular schedule for dismissal.

Linworth, Academy, Rockbridge, and full-day DACC students will take their tests at their respective schools. Half-day DACC and TWHS students will take their tests at Thomas Worthington High School.

Reminder - Door 16 Will be the Main Visitor Entrance

On April 19, the main visitor entrance will move to Door 16 (back, center of the building). Doors 1 and 2, along with most of the south side of the building, will only be accessible to construction vehicles and emergency vehicles after April 19. All visitors must enter through Door 16. It is our normal location for student drop-off and pick-up before and after school by car. This procedure will not change, although we will add designated visitor parking and have that entrance staffed throughout the day. (Here is a map of the property if you need it.)

Freshman Mentor Online Applications & Teacher Recommendations Due Friday April 28th at 3:20 pm

Attention Sophomore and Junior Parents/Guardians:

We are now accepting applications for Freshman Mentors for the 2023-2024 school year. Freshman Mentor responsibilities include: easing the transition for all incoming 9th grade students, providing academic and organizational support, and attending a variety of social extracurricular activities to engage with the freshman class.

Students can access the online application now through their respective Schoology pages for the Classes of 2024 and 2025 or by clicking 2023-24 Freshman Mentor Application. Students are also required to get three current teachers to complete online recommendations for them. Both the online application and the teacher recommendations are due by Friday April 28th at 3:20 pm.

Please note current mentors must re-apply for next year. Priority consideration will be given to returning senior mentors and rising juniors. First time senior applicants may be screened through an interview process. Please know that not all applicants will be accepted into the program, so we encourage students to put extra time and thought into their application. If students have any questions, students should contact Mallory Tecklenburg or Alyssa Craft.

Worthington Robotics Team - Cultivating a Culture of STEM

The Worthington Robotics Team (WorBots 4145) is proud to announce they are going to the world championships yet again, continuing their legacy from 2018 and 2019! This team of 36 students from both Thomas Worthington and Worthington Kilbourne High School competed fiercely at three regional competitions across the Midwest, rising to the top at Buckeye Regional and Greater Pittsburgh Regional. They won the prestigious Impact Award, the most coveted award in the FIRST program, celebrating the team’s immense impact by spreading STEM and business opportunities throughout the Worthington community. Their success was not limited to business and outreach only, with their robot Eclipse reaching the semifinals at Greater Pittsburgh Regional. Through these achievements at competition, and their continual support of 3 elementary and 1 middle school team, the WorBots have truly exemplified their motto of “Engage, Inspire, Impact.”

What Teachers and Staff are Saying

See what the teachers and staff are saying about the TWHS March Cardinals of the Month.

The 3Rs - Cardinal Expectations at TWHS

There are three general behavior expectations at Thomas Worthington High School: build Relationships, show Respect, and be Responsible.

We define build Relationships as “to cultivate belonging”. It is our goal that 100% of our students feel connected to at least one adult that they trust enough to go to when they really need it. From our morning greeting as each student enters the building, to each teacher connecting with each student, to our Wednesday homeroom lessons, we strive to create an environment that is so welcoming - all are inspired to learn.

We define show Respect as “use appropriate language”. We work towards being mindful of the words we speak and the immense power they have on ourselves and others. We learn that the words we say, along with the time, setting, and location have an impact on others.

We define be Responsible as “to attend and be on time to class”. We are intentional about the value of showing up, being on time, and being present for ourselves and others.
