Hawks Happenings

October 2022

Happy October!

It's hard to believe that it is already October! We have been in school for 24 days!

Parents of third and fourth graders are reminded to connect to the Parent Portal so you can stay up to date on your child's grades. K-2 teachers typically do not use this system for grades. Midterms will come home on Wednesday, October 5th so please review these with your child.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and stay dry!

School Reminders and News

Morning Arrival:
  • Drop off begins at 7:15 AM
  • Helpers to open car doors report at 7:30 AM
  • Please pull around to the first marked spot on the sidewalk closest to the parking lot for drop off. (Where Mrs. Allison typically stands). This allows more cars to drop off at once.
  • If you have to get out of your car to unbuckle children or open the door for them, please park in the parking lot and walk your child to the sidewalk.
  • Parents who pull into the parking lot must make sure that their child is walked safely to the sidewalk. Students should not walk through the parking lot by themselves.
  • Notes: We have added more spots for drop off in the morning to help speed up the line.
  • Students who are not in their classroom by 8 AM must get a tardy slip so we can accurately account for the students on our campus. This is part of our safety procedures.

Afternoon Dismissal:

  • Cars should not form a car line anywhere on campus prior to 2:20 PM. Do not block the road leading up to the main office. If you arrive on campus earlier, please park in a parking space in the parking lot and form the car rider line beginning at 2:20 PM. It is unlawful for cars to pass the car line on the wrong side of the road.
  • We are now calling car rider names at 2:30 PM.
  • We have added number signs to the spots to help students quickly find their assigned pick up spot.
  • Please remind your child to look for their car when they come outside. It is helpful if they know what their car looks like.
  • Loaded cars will be stopped at the corner to allow buses to exit the campus safely. We have added this staff member duty so we can start loading car riders earlier otherwise we have to wait until buses leave the campus to start calling names.
  • The car line is typically finished by 3 PM so please arrive no later than 3 PM to pick up your child.

We understand that patience in key when using the car rider line. Please note that if the car rider line does not work for your family and you live within the NBES boundary lines, then you may contact the school for bus rider times and information.

Parent/Guardian Guests for Lunch:

  • Parents may start joining your child's class for lunch. Please note that you must let your child's teacher know in advance when you are coming. This is important as some days schedules are different or there may be other activities that make having visitors more challenging on a particular.
  • Parents should plan to sit with your child's class in the cafeteria. If there is not space at the assigned tables, a lunch duty supervisor will help you find a location in the cafeteria to sit with your child.
  • Adult lunch prices are $4.75 and we do not accept Debit/Credit.

Here are some notes from our Student Handbook:

  • No soft drinks are allowed at school.
  • We encourage parents not to bring food from outside vendors during lunch due to student allergies.

As always all visitors must sign in at the office and wear the visitor tag while inside the building. Please keep in mind that any change in COVID precautions might modify these protocols for eating lunch with your child at school.

Please remember to bring your ID if you are checking your child in tardy or checking your child out of school early.

COVID Updated Protocols

  • If a student tests positive for COVID (at home or at a healthcare provider), they would isolate for 5 days from when their symptoms began. We will recognize the guidelines established by the CDC and NCDHHS regarding the use of a face covering to be worn for days 6-10 upon return to school.

  • Our normal exclusionary symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting are in effect. If a student has a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, they must remain at home until symptoms are resolved for 24 hours.

  • Hand hygiene, enhanced cleaning protocols, and improved ventilation are all still priorities and important mitigating strategies.

  • Face coverings remain optional, to be worn by anyone at anytime.

  • Physical distancing such as 3 ft or 6 ft apart is no longer required.

  • Contact tracing is not required.

  • Following the guidelines established by the CDC and NCDHHS, MAHEC will not be providing rapid antigen testing in our schools. Staff and families may order at home tests for free via this link: https://www.covid.gov/tests.

  • MAHEC will send home further guidance regarding when students need to stay home due to an illness.

  • For students where an absence is Covid related please indicate this in your parent or health provider's note.

  • Students/teachers will follow the same guidelines for makeup work as they would for any other illness or injury.
