5th Grade Update
Week of February 12-16th
This weeks learning at a glance
Reading- Your child will be reviewing primary and secondary sources from the Gold Rush Era and summarizing and inferring the main ideas from them.
Writing- Your child will be writing 3 journal entries about a fictional character that is 1-Getting to California for the Gold Rush, 2- Being in Sacramento Valley and trying to 'strike it rich', and 3- Deciding to leave California to return home. The journal entries will be based on facts from their research of the Gold Rush last week.
Social Studies- Your child will be reading and writing about the events that occurred during the Gold Rush primarily in the experiences of how people got to California, the experiences in trying to get gold, and finally deciding when it is time to return home.
Math- Your child will be reviewing all learned math skills to prepare for the upcoming Math benchmark next week.
Science- Your child will be inquiring into the differences between weather and climate.

Spring Portraits and Class Pictures – Thursday, February 15th AM.
Valentine’s Day Parties – Friday, February 16th with Early Release at 11:40 am.
Student Holiday on Monday, February 19th (if we don’t have a bad weather day)
Open House and Fine Arts Night - Tuesday, March 6th.
**Spring Break is the week of March 12 – 16th.
WatchDOGS “Daddy-Daughter Dance” will be Saturday, April 14th at JES.
Needed Supplies -SOS!
Lysol Wipes to keep tables clean! Each teacher is completely out and in order to keep germs at bay it is best to continuously clean the rooms after each class which is made more simple with additional wipes.
If you are able to contribute any of these items please just have your student bring in with them.

Box Top Contest-
Box Top Contest – JES earns 10 cents for each Box Top. Our last check was $813.60!! The next contest will be by CLASS. The CLASS that brings the highest percentage of Box Tops will get to play a basketball game called “Hot Shot” with collegiate athlete, our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Oakley. Start sending them to school ASAP to get the competition rolling AND because some of the box tops expire on March and PTA will send those in early. Final deadline for class basketball contest in Friday, March 2nd.

Dollar general has earbuds for $1!
Please make sure your child has earbuds that they can keep at school. You may have learned already from your child, but it is difficult to hear on one of the programs when they do not have earbuds and they can not listen to the various parts read to them.
