Roselawn FIVE
Weekly Newsletter of Roselawn Elementary - January 14, 2019
Roselawn Families:
We will officially hit the middle of January this week, hopefully winter is half over! We are in the second week of our Roselawn FIVE weekly parent newsletter. These will also be posted on the Roselawn Elementary Website. Enjoy this week's Roselawn FIVE!
#1 - Mid-Year Assessments
As we hit the halfway point of the school year, classroom teachers will be doing some mid-year assessments. These short assessments help our teachers answer the question - Are we on track to meet our yearly academic goals for each student?
Different grade levels use different methods to assess students progress. Kindergarten and first grade will conduct one on one sessions with students to gauge mid-year progress, while upper-grade levels will use computer-based assessments. Once this process is complete, grade level teams will use their weekly Professional Learning Community meetings to analyze the results and make changes to instruction as needed.
Incorporating this process into Roselawn's continuous improvement process has helped the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Area School District become one of the top 10% academic districts in the state of Wisconsin.
#2 - Winter Illness
During the last week, Roselawn has seen an increased trend of student illness, and this is not unusual during this time of year. Our custodians do a tremendous job of wiping down desks and sanitizing items at the end of each day. Our classrooms also focus on washing hands many times throughout the day and especially before and after lunch. Even with these precautions in place illness can strike.
The link below will offer some simple prevention tips for flu and cold prevention:
Stay Healthy!
#3 - After school Bowling League for Students in Grades 3 through 8
The Chetek-Weyerhaeuser communities work hard to provide opportunities for students outside of the school day. The last couple of years the Chetek Lanes has offered an after-school bowling program for students in grades 3rd through 8th. The league takes place on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

#4 - Outside or Inside?
During the winter the decision to stay inside for recess or go outside sometimes can be based on a lot of variables. We wanted to share with parents some of the criteria we use to determine whether we have indoor or outdoor recess:
- If the temperature or windchill reaches below -5 we will have indoor recess. Even with the cold, we take in several factors - Is the sun shining? What is the wind speed? We use the National Weather Service Official website to determine these factors.
- If it is raining or icy conditions on the equipment we will have indoor recess. Lately, we have had a lot of ice build up on the ground due to our rainy winter. We did stay inside a day last week due to the ice conditions.
During indoor recess, students stay inside classrooms and will watch movies, play board games, use the laptops to play computer-based games and sometimes talk with friends. Even though these are fun activities, nothing can replace the fresh air during a beautiful winter day.
To enjoy these activities outside students should come appropriately dressed for the weather - snow pants, jacket, gloves, and stocking cap. There is also an ample supply of extra snow pants, hats, and gloves on hand that are new and donated to the school. If students might need to borrow one of these items, our school counselor can assist them.
Recess and play are very important for students to have a successful school day. Classrooms do an excellent job of providing extra recess when possible and allowing students the opportunity to move and play with friends and peers.
#5 - What are we reading?
In helping to build upon this literacy culture, Mr. Kowalski and Mr. Nelson read some of their favorite books to Kindergarten and First grade classrooms. At least a couple of times a week you can find either one of them sharing a favorite read with students in Kindergarten and First grade.
This week Mr. Kowalski is reading "Jack B. Ninja" and Mr. Nelson is reading "The Old Lady that Swallowed a Cow." Feel free to reach out to your Kindergarten and First grade student to get an update on each story!
We also encourage parents to read consistently to their son or daughter, or listen to them read. That is the best kind of homework there is!
