CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
August 31st, 2018
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
As the month of August wraps up, CDS students and teachers alike are happy to be settling into their regular class and school routines. Co-curricular clubs (CCs) and After School Programs (ASPs) are off to a great start as well. Between our four ASPs and four Fall KAIAC Athletic teams we have nearly half of our MS student body involved in activities after school hours.
We're also excited about the outstanding kids who have been elected to lead as Student Council members this year (see comments from Ms. Montelibano and Ms. Koetje below).
MS students were hard at work this week updating their Digital Portfolios for the 2018-19 school year. Portfolios at CDS MS provide opportunities for students to reflect on their process and progress as they learn new content and skills.
This weekend, our Grade 5 boys will have the opportunity to compete alongside FP Grade 4s at Chadwick on Saturday 9/1! We will share season overviews for Boys & Girls Soccer, Badminton, and X-Country early next week.
* Please note that the date for our annual We Run Cheongna (1/2 day) fun run has been rescheduled from October 5th to October 12th.
As a school community we're very happy to share the wonderful things happening in our building. So please enjoy the contents of this week's MS Newsletter.
Have a great weekend!

Student Council 2018-19
If you walked through the halls of CDS middle school last week, you would’ve seen the walls filled with clever campaign posters from the 21 students that ran for a position on the student council. After thoughtful and persuasive speeches by all of the candidates (and a delay because of the typhoon), middle school students voted for their representatives and officers on Monday. Students gathered in the Small Theater during C.C. time to hear the results and acceptance speeches from the winners.
Here are the CDS Student Council Members for the 2018-2019 school year:
Grade 5 Representative: Joseph Jun
Grade 6 Representative: Yu-chien Chang
Grade 7 Representative: Ashley Choi
Grade 8 Representative: Suhyeon Han
Treasurer: Erica Jeon
Secretary: SH Choi
Vice President: Henna Jeong
President: Sophia Seo
The Student Council’s first order of business is to start fundraising by hosting Dress Down Friday for future events they will be hosting this year. They have already been hard at work spreading the news with their fellow middle schoolers!

MS Korean - "Three Things I Want to Improve the Most this Year"
Starting the new school year, middle school students have personally thought about three things they want to develop the most in this year and wrote their reasons.
In this activity, students presented not only goals on academic fields such as improving grades in poor subjects, but also on various areas including exercise, hobbies, friendship, books, movies, music, musical instruments, travel, etc.
The aim of this activity was to set up the goal by themselves for a new school year and to make a commitment to work for a year to achieve it. Furthermore, even if all three goals might be unsuccessful and only one of them will be achieved, it would also be very meaningful in their life. The activity is a kind of time capsule activity that will allow students to identify how closely they approached the three goals they set for the year.

Grade 5 Music Class - Creating a Southeast Asian Shadow Puppet Show
During Term 1, the 5th graders are doing an entirely Project-Based Learning unit. As a class, they are working together to create their own Southeast Asian Shadow Puppet Show. We briefly listened, discussed, and learned about shadow puppetry and the music from SE Asia. This past week, the students have been diligently working on writing their class shadow puppet story. Here is a sample of 5A's story:
One sunny day, the bird tribes were looking around for food. Right away, they knew where to go because they memorized the map. So, using their excellent sense of direction, they found a nest easily. They were so hungry, they didn’t care to think about the turtle tribe. They went for the turtle eggs without thinking. Suddenly, the birds heard a rustle in the bushes. They were sure it was the turtle tribe trying to protect the eggs. The birds were scared. Even though the turtles were slow, they stood on the the turtle tribe’s territory. The bird tribe ran as fast as they could for their lives. The turtles, saddened and angered at the loss of their eggs, wanted to get revenge from the birds. Yet, because the turtles remained with their protective instincts, they decided to make amends with the elephants and ask them to fight against the birds. Surprisingly, the elephants agreed and together, they headed toward the bird’s territory.

MS Music Department Happy to Receive New Percussion Instruments
The CDS MS Music Department was thrilled to receive new percussion instruments this year! We received 6 new large tubano drums and some new auxiliary percussion instruments. Ms. Van Liew is excited to have the students play and create new music this year on the instruments! Watch the 7th grade students groove out to a percussion ensemble piece. (see video below)
A few of the 5th graders visited Ms. Van Liew during Lab time for their very first instrument lesson! During the 25 minute lesson, we covered the formation of the lips to produce a sound and how to finger 5 notes! The three brass boys in the video are showing off some of their first sounds they have made on their instrument! (see video below)
