String students & the Philadelphia Orchestra

String students from all 3 middle schools attended a performance by a quartet of musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra. Students listened to pieces from the classical repertoire by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the newly refurbished Pennwood Auditorium. Performers included Yu-Ting Chen and Jonathan Beiler, violins; Renard Edwards, viola and Richard Harlow, cello. An interesting question/answer session followed the 35 minute performance. Pictured with the musicians is Pennwood Orchestra Director, Michael McGarry, who stated, “This is the third time tremendous string musicians from this world class orchestra have come to Pennsbury. I’m honored to call Mr. Harlow a colleague and friend.”
Big picture

Disabilities Awareness Day

On Tuesday, May 11th, students at Pennwood Middle School experienced our fourth annual character education lesson by participating in a Disabilities Awareness Day, organized by Michele Becknell & Jacqueline Medaglia. This year, Student Council’s vision was to work with the Best Buddies organization in order to promote a sense of community and foster understanding between all students. Student Council members who had previously attended a leadership conference led empathy-building activities in each classroom. Student reflections at the end of the lesson revealed that they had a better understanding of what it’s like to struggle with learning disabilities and pledged to be more understanding and helpful toward their peers.

Marc Mero's BADD Tour

On May 9th, former WWE Wrestling champion Marc Mero visited Pennwood during his BADD tour. He encouraged students to Be Against Destructive Decisions. Pennwood students gathered in the auditorium for this special presentation organized by the school’s UNITY team.
