November 2019 in Review
Author Visit - Bridget Heos
On November 25th, all students at Pauline South were able to hear a captivating presentation from author, Bridget Heos. Bridget lives in Kansas City, KS with her family and traveled to Topeka to spend the morning at PS and the afternoon at PC! She has written over 120 books. The students have enjoyed reading her popular Mustache Baby series along with several non-fiction. She started out the morning speaking to the 4th and 5th graders about what it takes to become a writer and the process she goes through. Then she presented to 6th graders about forensic science and how much research goes in to writing a book. It was very interesting and the students were able to ask some great questions at the end! If students purchased one of her books, they were able to stay after her presentation and get it signed. All students received a bookmark with her signature on it!
Thanksgiving Themed Breakout
Have you ever been to an Escape room? Well students in 5th and 6th grade participated in a similar activity, only instead of trying to escape, they were trying to break in to the Breakout EDU boxes to save the turkey from being eaten! This is a great opportunity for students to collaborate and think creatively. They had 30 minutes to figure out 5 different locks. Most groups were successful!
Pauline South Gives Back
Last year, Mrs. Duncan organized a school-wide community service event where the main project was making 100 blankets for Project Linus. The Topeka Chapter of Project Linus is non-profit organization that has donated over 6000 blankets to children in the Topeka community. Our chapter distributes blankets to the Stormont-Vail & St. Francis Pediatric Units and CASA of Shawnee County. This year Pauline South staff and students committed to making 125 blankets! Way to go Panthers!
