Nursing Notes — School Nurses Talk About Seasonal Allergies
Springtime allergy season is in full bloom, bringing with it runny noses, itchy eyes, and sneezes. This year is a little different, as we are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. With this comes uncertainty about which symptoms should raise concern for us, as we are spending time outside.
Classic allergy symptoms brought on by pollen present themselves as congestion, itchy or watery eyes, dry ticklish cough, and runny nose. There are several ways you can help with these symptoms. A few are listed below for your reference.
• Limit outdoor activities when the pollen count is high
• Wear sunglasses and a hat
• Change clothes that have been worn outside.
• Bathe and shampoo your hair daily before going to bed
• Wash bedding frequently
• Limit close contact with pets that have been outdoors and bathe your animals
• Consider taking an over the counter allergy medication
• Contact your family healthcare provider if you have further questions or concerns.
Many people at this time are wondering what indicates an allergy response vs. COVID-19 symptoms, as it can be confusing. According to the CDC website, the major symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, trouble breathing or shortness of breath, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain and body aches, very sore throat, headache, and now loss of taste or smell. If you experience these symptoms, please check with your healthcare provider.
These are extremely challenging times to navigate. We hope these tips and information can help you in the coming months as we strive to get out in our safe spaces, get fresh air, and enjoy the beautiful Oregon outdoors. We send our best to you and your loved ones during this time. We will all get through this together!
