Sixth Grade Organization Tips

by Lily O'Daly

How does it feel to be the first 6th graders at Berner? As of November 1, it is the 38th day of school. The first three days were definitely the toughest. There were so many things to remember. For example books, locker combinations, and especially your schedule. Here are some helpful tips on how to stay organized and remember all those important things.

1. Color Code. Have a binder for every subject. Make the first period red, second blue, third yellow, etc. Put everything you need for that subject, such as notebook, folders, and books, inside the binder so you can just take the binder.

2. Plan. Keep track of all your classes and write on your schedule when to go to your locker. Keep in mind how far your locker is from the class and how far the classes are from each other.

3. The two trick. Keep two trapper keepers: one for the morning and one for the afternoon. Put all your morning classes in one, and all your afternoon classes in another. Also, you can use two bags.

4. Locker Combinations. To remember all your combinations, write them all in on the back of your name tag on your Chromebook. Don’t write the locker number only the combinations!

5. Gym Locker. To remember your gym locker combination, write it on the tongue of your gym sneaker.

6. Don’t go to your locker between every class. Say you have gym and band next to each other. If you go all the way back upstairs, you will be late to lunch (and be last in the lunch line!).

Being the first 6th graders in Berner is very special. I hope these tips helped!

Dig Pink for Breast Cancer

by Lea Mastorakis and AnnaRose Ferro

October is breast cancer awareness month. People all around are raising money to help cure this disease. Massapequa takes a big part in helping to cure this disease. Breast cancer has become a disease that the whole country faces. About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. For men, 1 in 1,000 develop breast cancer in their lifetime. This cancer is killing so many, and Massapequa is helping to change that.

Massapequa junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams hold an event to raise money to help cure breast cancer. They invite people to come watch both volleyball matches. They have sweets, Massapequa merchandise, and baskets that can be won by entering raffle tickets and hoping yours gets picked! This year, this event was held on October 17 at Massapequa High School. This is their 10th year holding this event. So far they have raised about $85,000. They hope to reach $100,000 this year by the end of October. A stupendous 90% of all money raised goes to breast cancer research. The money is given to an organization called Side-out foundation. The phrase “side-out” in volleyball refers to taking control of the ball. Side-out foundation believes in taking control of the cancer. They have worked with different fundraisers across the country to help cure breast cancer and other cancers. Massapequa’s Dig Pink night is changing lives every day. Make sure to support next year! Every bit counts!

Fun Fitness

By Lauren O’Brien and Samantha Flanigan

Trying to get fit and stay healthy? If so, come to the brand new Berner Fitness Center. The updated fitness center is a great way to exercise with friends. It is a great after school activity and it is available two days a week for students. The fitness center is open for boys on Mondays and Thursdays and for girls on Wednesday and Friday. Work in groups of two to four people and try all different workout machines and routines.

You either find a partner or get in a group of two to four and find a station. You get three minutes at each station. When you get to the station you read the instructions taped on or behind the station. After you read you begin. For any of the arm strength exercises, you would do 10 repetitions (or reps) then you switch. For anything else you would each do half a minute (if you are in partners).

There are two teachers there who are very nice and helpful and they will answer any questions that you have.

Do you know about it?

According to a Gmail poll:

99.9% of Berner has heard about the fitness center

75% or more haven’t gone

WHY?- Because you are “Too Lazy” or you “Have No Time," but try it!

Well, I hope you try the Berner Fitness Center if you haven’t already, and if you do, it will be fun fitness!

The Raccoon

by Erin Tumminello

The Raccoon

By, Erin Tumminello

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

4:00 a.m.

A blanket of darkness was draped over the town of Massapequa. All was calm and nearly silent, except for the quiet sounds of crickets chirping. Small breezes gently brushed each blade of grass as it flew along. There was a small whoosh as the occasional car would cruise down the road. The sun had not begun to rise yet, as it was awaiting for the setting of the moon and the end of the twilight.

It was a peaceful quiet night. But then, at Berner, the town’s middle school, the stillness of the early morning was interrupted by an abrupt skkch skkch skkch. Tiny paws scrabble against one of the building’s doors. Small fingers hook around the handle and pull. It is unlocked, and it opens.

As the small mammal scurries inside, a silent alarm is activated. Footage is recorded on a security camera. The animal’s claws clack on the floor as it wanders through the school. A cricket chirps but is eaten within moments. A raccoon is in the building, and nobody knows.

6:30 a.m.

The town is beginning to wake up. There is school today, and students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will be getting on the bus within an hour or so. Others are already awake getting ready to go to early morning activities at the school. There is still no knowledge of the fuzzy visitor at Berner.

The sun is beginning to appear on the horizon as kids leave their houses to go to early activities. The streets are now crowded with cars of people going to Berner, along with Ames and Massapequa High School, which start even earlier than the middle school.

- - -

The raccoon pads through the hallways. The little animal scurries through the maze of corridors, searching through the building for anything that interests it.

7:15 a.m.

Kids and teachers are now arriving at the school. Early morning activities are beginning. Today is a normal school day… or so they think. Everyone is still ignorant of the curious mammal walking throughout Berner.

7:20 a.m.

The school is now sending messages that there will be a delayed opening due to facility issues. Students are now being picked up or leaving the school because it is no longer safe for them to be in the building; a raccoon can be very dangerous if provoked.

Approximately 10:00 a.m.

The raccoon has been locked in an old tech room. The door is blocked so it cannot escape. Animal control has been alerted and will capture the raccoon later. It is now safe for the students and staff, but also for the raccoon because it could get hurt in the huge waves of people walking through the hallways between classes. With the raccoon trapped away, the school day has finally begun.

Later that day

Animal control arrives and takes the raccoon away. It was most likely examined and given vaccinations so it wouldn’t get rabies, and then driven away far enough from the school that it wouldn’t find its way back so it could be released.

Raccoon Facts

Raccoons are very curious and smart animals who are very misunderstood. Many people believe that raccoons are rabid and vicious, but that isn’t true. Here are some facts about these interesting animals;

  • Raccoons usually live in forests, but can be found in suburban and urban areas, so don’t be surprised if you find one in your neighborhood.

  • These animals are cunning and skillful, which makes them great climbers and able to open things like jars and doors.

  • Despite what many people may believe, raccoons are not rodents. They belong to the Procyon genus.

  • Raccoons are nocturnal animals (which means they are awake at night and sleep during the day), but it isn’t unusual for them to be out and about when the sun is up.

  • Raccoons aren’t hostile and won’t attack for no reason. As long as you don’t provoke them or act in a way that they find threatening (chasing, walking up to them or their babies, etc.), they’ll leave you alone. Make sure to keep your distance from them though, because they can injure you very badly. They are even more dangerous to pets, so keep them in the house or on a leash (if you have a dog) if you or someone else recently saw a raccoon where you live.

  • Many people think that raccoons get rabies more easily than other animals, but their chance at contracting this disease is no larger than that of other animals.

Rabid Raccoons

Rabies is a dangerous virus that affects mammals. It is contracted by getting bitten by a rabid animal or by having the drool of a rabid animal get into the body via open cuts, sores, etc.

Raccoons can get rabies, which can make them even more dangerous than they already are. A rabid raccoon can be recognized with one or more of the following signs;

  • Dazed, confused expression

  • Walking irregularly

  • Aggression

  • White, foamy drool coming out of mouth

  • Seemingly unaware of noises that would normally scare it

If you see a raccoon with rabies, contact animal control immediately. You should also warn others who live in the area, and if you have pets, keep them inside the house at all costs until the raccoon is captured.

If a raccoon lives near you and you want it removed, call trappers or animal control. Make sure they don’t kill it, but give it a rabies shot so it will be protected from the virus.

If you have pets, make sure they have been vaccinated for rabies.

If you were bitten by a raccoon (or other animal) with rabies, wash the wound right away and call a doctor or hospital and get there as soon as possible to get a shot to stop the virus.

Berner Theatre Box Presents SEUSSICAL

by Teresa Greene

No one should be forced to go to Seussical because they all want to go. Seussical is Berner's play this year and I really recommend seeing it because Berner's plays are always amazing. The dates of the show are November 17 and 18.

It is a play for the whole family so if you have little siblings you should really come see it. I'm not saying that it's for little kids, it's just great for the whole family. Seussical includes some of the best singers and dancers because there were auditions, so you know they are the best of the best and Seussical is going to be an amazing show!

What is Seussical about?

Seussical ¨doesn't have much of a storyline¨ says Ms. Touches, the director of the play. You get to see all of your favorite, classical Dr. Seuss characters including Horton from Horton Hears a Who and of course Cat in the Hat, but there's many other characters, too! If you are a person who likes music then this is for you because, as Ms. Touches said, ¨It is mostly singing and dancing. There aren't many lines.¨ But let's be real, you know we all love to listen to music.

Seussical, in my words, is a ¨crossover special of all the Dr. Seuss stories.¨ but it's an amazing crossover special included with props, singing, acting, and dancing! Don't forget costumes too! If you really want to learn more about the storyline then you should go see it!

Who's in it?

Joe Correy- Cat in the hat (8th)

Emmie McBride- Mayzie La Bird (8th)

Cooper Arbisi- JoJo (6th)

MIchael Augello- Horton the Elephant (8th)

You can find more of the cast in the program.

When and where do I get tickets?

When? Make sure to listen to the announcements for when to get tickets. Where? Tickets will be sold in the Cafeteria once they are announced. Don't forget to bring money! (The price will be said on the announcements.) Also you might want to know that during intermission we sell snacks!

Save the Date!

Remember to mark your calendar for November 17 and 18 because you won't want to miss Seussical! The cast is just waiting for you to come see them perform!

A "Dog's" Walk in the Park

by Anna Goldberg

Photographers: Alexa Biscardi and Xin Dong

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word fall? Is it the leaves changing color, pumpkins or even Halloween? Well, the leaves changing color is definitely a really beautiful thing, and a great way to see this is by going to some really great dog parks!

Over the past couple of weeks I have been going to really nice dog parks with my family, and friends, One of them was Gardiner County Park in Bayshore and that one was very pretty. You can take a walk with your dog around the area and look at all the beautiful nature. There are even paths through the woods that lead to a beach. While we were there we saw two St Bernards, a beehive and even a bunny! It was a really nice walk.

Another really nice one is right here in Massapequa. It is very big and there is even two sections for big dogs and little dogs. The ground is wood chips and sometimes it can get very muddy. One time my dog got so muddy that we could barely recognize him! Also sometimes a fight might break out. It can either be with the dog or with the owners. As long as you know to take your dog out of the park when something seems fishy you’ll be fine. Usually a owner fight will break out when their dog is being attacked by another dog. But that’s usually very rare.

This next dog park is a little different than the rest. The ground is turf! This dog park is perfect if you just want your dog to run around and not get muddy. During the summer they even had a little baby pool, My dog seriously adored that thing. When he wasn't in it no one was allowed in it. He would bark and bark at the other dogs, so no other dog came in it. It also has two sections one for big dogs and one for little dogs. This nice place is located in Wantagh Park.

The last dog park I have to share is located in Cedar Creek. It’s a little dusty and not too big. But if you want to, check it out!

Dog parks are very relaxing and a great way for your dog to have fun, socialize, and exercise! So, come on!, Grab your dog and try one of these great dog parks!

Las Vegas Shooting Recovery

by Jacqueline Paduano

After the largest mass shooting in recent history, there was a lot of recovery and rebuilding to be done. The Las Vegas mass shooting ruined families and traumatized lives, but also made people stronger. This event was yet another sign for people to unite in a time of need. Some still have some recovering to do, but are better enough to share their stories and inspire us by showing that it is important to get through events like these together and to push through the hard times. According to CNN, many survivors, such as Tina Frost, Zack Mesker, and Jeffery Koishor all made sure to help those around them during the mass shooting before they were wounded. These people are a true sign of strength after the shooting.

The survivors and owners of the country music festival also support the blood drive that went on during the aftermath of the shooting. Many figures in the public eye and ordinary citizens in Las Vegas, Nevada have been donating blood to help families in mourning. Based on information from The Washington Post, United Blood Services locations in Las Vegas were open to everyone to take their part in helping for a cause. Donating blood was and still is the main way to help after the shootings, and definitely had the most people take their part in the recovery.

Clearly, the United States has done a lot in order to help everyone recover. Without the help of important and caring organizations, this event wouldn’t have had enough awareness spread. With the help of so many citizens, tragedy has been turned into a sign of gain to never give up. All across the nation, people have done everything in their power to make this Las Vegas even stronger than it already was before the shooting. Seeing everyone get together to help on the same thing shows the true meaning of why this nation exists: to help and fight for those in need.

Hurricane Irma

by Ava Fischetti

Hurricane Irma, the first category 5 hurricane in 25 years to hit the United States and many other islands, did more damage than anyone expected.

Irma was created by a tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands. Irma’s highest wind speed was 183 mph. At one point, Hurricane Irma was the strongest hurricane the National Hurricane Center ever recorded in the Atlantic. It went through Cuba, Turks and Caicos Islands, Saint Martin, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Barbuda, St. Bart and the east coast of the U.S.

Irma killed 38 people in the Caribbean, 34 in Florida, three in Georgia, four in North Carolina and South Carolina and at least 12 people in Puerto Rico that are confirmed.

In Puerto Rico, Irma not only killed 12 people, but left thousands of people homeless, and more than one million people without power. That's not even as bad as the tiny island of Barbuda in which 95% of the island was completely demolished!

For only the fifth time in 46 years, Disney closed its parks from Saturday to Monday the days the storm hit. In preparation, they tied down the flags on the castle and three Disney cruises were canceled. Disney escaped major damage. Cinderella’s castle is still standing, but there is a lot of fixing to be done.

Through these hard times, people really try to help out. There are many relief programs both nationally and locally. Organizations like The Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, Salvation Army and many celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Reynolds, Missy Elliott, and Kristin Bell have joined in the relief efforts. Here in our own school the Builders Club raised money for hurricane relief by selling digital supplies.

Another Side of the Screen

Social Media

Snapchat? Instagram? Musical.ly? Facebook? Most kids this generation knows these apps. More than 94% of teens in America use these apps everyday! Though all of these apps make around 300 million dollars a year… it costs them more than 4,000 lives a year.

https://nobullying.com/bullying-statistics/

Cyber Bullying

Think about it! If 94% of teens use social media with most of them probably go through some depression or bullying. With these new social media apps,we know what everyone is doing when they are doing it. Snapchat. Snapchat is the most used social media app in America. Things send, disappear, and everything in between. You know where everyone is and the time that they post things. Though that seems bad, the creators of Snapchat created a new feature called Snap Maps. You can see who is with who and where they are! From experience from me and almost every other person in middle school, it feels horrible when people text you rude things through any form of social media. People need to realize how many people feel this way. 52% of people get cyber bullied more than once as a teenagerchild. There has been many organizations to try and stop cyber bullying the most effective way is to just get off of social media

Reputations

These days, most things middle schoolers care about is popularity, followers, and likesOur “reputations” can be ruined with just one click.Do you really want people to know you as the who bullies everyone and spreads rumors? Or do you want to be known as the who puts a stop to this Just take a few minutes out of your day and think, “How will this make her/him feel?” or “Maybe I shouldn’t click yet.” Just remember...there is another side of the screen.

Sports

Major League Baseball Postseason

by Liam DeVos

With the dog days of summer finally over and the leaves starting to fall, not only is the start for the NFL and NBA, it is also time for the playoffs for America's pastime. With all the drama, fights, suspensions, win streaks, it's time for a champion to be crowned and legends to be made.

With the American League looking super stacked record wise, I feel that the Cleveland Indians led by Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez would destroy the New York Yankees in the ALDS. They did , but only for two games. When they had a chance to win the series three times and blew their chance of winning their first World Series in over 65 years. But no, they blew a 2-0 lead in a best of five game series to the New York Yankees. In the other AL series the Houston Astros led by Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve decimated the Boston Red Sox by winning 3-1 in there ALDS matchup. Now with only World Series spots to clinch, the Astros and Yankees will battle to the death in two very different scenarios. The Astros look for the first World Series and the Yankees look for their 28th World Series ring.

On the other side in the National League, it is all set still very competitive with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs about to start there NLCS matchup. The Dodgers led by their ace Clayton Kershaw cruised by the Arizona Diamondbacks with a three game sweep by the Dodgers in blue. In the other NLDS match up the Washington Nationals once again could not win a winner take all game if their lives depended on it. In three of their last four playoff appearances they lost a deciding game five to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016, and now the Cubs in 2017. The Cubs led by incredible first base, third base duo in Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant look to win their second straight title, after coming back from 3-1 down in the Word Series last year, winning their first title in 108 years. The Dodgers on the other hand hope they can win their first title since 1988.

With the World Series right around the corner, all baseball fans hope for some drama and some clutch moments and wait for the World Series champion to be crowned. Who will it be; the Houston Astros, the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Chicago Cubs?

National Football League Update

by Brian Kopp

AFC East

The AFC East is one of the most if not they most changed divisions from last year

Buffalo Bills : The Bills 3-1 after four weeks. Most experts did not expect them to have a good season but they are proving otherwise. Tyrod Taylor has thrown for five touchdowns in the first four games. No one on the Bills has exploded with amazing offensive numbers. It's been the defense carrying most of the load. Their defense has not given up more than 20 points and all together has only given up 54 points after four games. Their opponents have only been averaging 13.5 points against them through four games. They aren't going to be a team that wows you in offensive numbers, but they will find out how to win.

New York Jets: The Jets are 2-2 after four weeks. After The Jets lost their first two games, most expected it was going to be another crummy season for the Jets. But, the Jets didn't give up winning their last two against the Dolphins on the road and an overtime thriller winning on a walk off 41 yard field goal. Things are looking up for the Jets as they look to take their winning streak to three against the struggling 0-4 Cleveland Browns. The Jets are another one of those teams who aren't putting up amazing numbers but have the will to win.

New England Patriots: The Patriots are 2-2 after four weeks They have put up strong offensive numbers scoring 145 points in four games an average of 35 points. Brady has thrown for 10 touchdowns and Mike Gillislee has rushed for four touchdowns. Their struggles have come on defense. They have giving up an average of 30 points. A lot of experts expected another deep playoff run. Could the Patriots great run becoming to an end? Who knows, we will have to find out.

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins are 1-2 after four weeks after barely getting in the playoffs last year the expectations weren't too high. There 1-2 record points to one thing and one thing only. Their offense their defense has been solid after three weeks giving an average of 19 points. Their offense has only scored 23 points only six in the last two weeks. The defense has done their job. Let's see if the Dolphins offense and defense can come together and win some games.

AFC West

The AFC west is going how most expected it to.

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs are 4-0 after four weeks. After cruising by the Patriots on opening night, their offense and defense both have been clicking as they beat the Eagles by a touchdown. They cruised by the Chargers and Redskins both by two possessions. Things so far have looked great for the Chiefs.

Denver Broncos: The Broncos are 3-1 after four weeks. Much like the Chiefs, the Broncos are on a roll on offense and defense. They have been averaging 27 points a game and not letting up more than 26. Trevor Simeon has led this offense well with eight touchdown passes. Things are looking good for Denver.

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders are 2-2 through four weeks. The Raiders have gotten better every year in 2014 they went 3-13, 2015 7-9, 2016 12-4. They thought they might have had their first playoff win in 13 years last year after going 12-4 but they got demolished by the Texans in the wild card round. This year they had a strong start soundly winning their first two games, but then only put up 10 points in their last two losing both. Derek Carr got injured week four we don't know how long he'll be out, but it doesn't look good. The Raiders have just had plain old bad luck these last 14 years.

Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers are 0-4 through four weeks. It's been a rough four games for the Chargers losing three games by three points or less and getting beat by the Chiefs by 14. There isn't much to be said about the Chargers except it looks like they are going to rebuild. Rivers has had an okay year for his standards only six touchdowns. The Chargers are most likely going to rebuild these next few years.

AFC North

The AFC North has had a lot of excitement these last couple years between the Bengals, Steelers, and Ravens. In terms of playoff race the Browns are left out.

Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers are 3-1 through four weeks. In the tough battle in the AFC North the Steelers have been the top dog. Making Its to the playoffs the last three years and just missing out in 2012 and 13. After having a close call against the Browns opening day. The soundly defeated the Vikings by 17 points. The Bears Beast them in a back in forth battle that ended in o.t. Then they crushed the Ravens by 17 points.

Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens are 2-2 after four weeks after opening up against the Bengals and defeating them 20-0 on a balanced scoring attack. Then, they easily beat the Browns 24-10 and Jeremy Maclin caught his second touchdown of the year. Then, they were easily beat by both the Steelers 26-9 and the Jaguars 44-7. Joe Flacco threw two interceptions in each of the games.

Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals are 1-3 after four weeks. The Bengals got crushed in the opener, with Andy Dalton throwing four interceptions. Against the Texans in a slug fest they lost 13-9. They just couldn't get anything going. In week three it looked like they had a win against the Packers, but of course Aaron Rodgers came through sending the game into overtime and the Packers prevailed 27-24. Then in week four they crushed Cleveland 31-7.

Cleveland Browns: The Browns are 0-4 after four weeks. They opened up against Pittsburgh and gave them a scare only losing by three. Then the Ravens beat them 24-10. Then an amazing comeback against the Colts but lost 31-28. Then The Bengals crushed them 31-7. It's been a rough 15 years for the Browns and they aren't really showing signs of improvement.

*AFC South and on is after week 5.

AFC South

The AFC South normally has the worst records in the league. They haven't produced a 12 win team since 2012. The last two years the division winner was 9-7.

Jacksonville Jaguars: The Jaguars are surprising most people at a record of 3-2. They opened up against the Texans and easily beat them 29-7. Next week, they faced the Titans and where beat 37-16 mostly because a horrendous third quarter for the Jaguars. They were outscored 17-0 in the third quarter. Then they played the best game they've had all season beating the Ravens 44-7. They lost a back and forth battle against the Jets in overtime. Then shocked Pittsburgh beating the Steelers 30-9. Should Colin Kaepernick Come Back To The NFL?

by Will Carmenaty

Introduction

Most, if not all, NFL fans have taken notice of the actions that ex San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been taking a kneel during the National Anthem. At every NFL game he played in last season, and around the entire NFL, Kaepernick’s protest is continuing to expand, but our president is trying to put a stop to it.

The Expansion

As of April 2017, Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers and remains a free agent. Not only is Kaepernick taking part in this protest, but some entire teams are doing it. One of the biggest one yet, on September 25, 2017 the Dallas Cowboys, who are known as “America's Team,” locked arms then kneeled. Also, Colin Kaepernick’s ex teammate, San Francisco 49ers Defenseman Eric Reid, joined Kaepernick. The Pittsburgh Steelers are also staying in the locker room for the National Anthem, except one player. That player is Alejandro Villanueva. Villanueva was also in the Army and did three tours in Afghanistan. There are tremendous amounts of other players and teams who are taking place in this protest, and they are making huge news. Colin Kaepernick has made a huge impact on not only the NFL, but the world.

How Kap Seeks To Come Back

After Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the 49ers in April 2017, two other teams have been in need of a quarterback. As all NFL fans know, the 49ers went 2-14 last year, and Kaepernick played half of the season. He said, “I am done with the 49ers fans, coaches, and organization.” This led him to free agency, but two teams have been looking at him. Those two teams are the Baltimore Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Ravens looked at him since their starting quarterback, Joe Flacco has been out with a back injury all preseason. The Jaguars looked at him since both of their quarterbacks, Blake Bortles and Chad Henne haven't even had 10 wins in the last three years. Even after all of that, both teams passed on signing Kaepernick, which made the fans of Kaepernick's cause protest even more.

The Conflicts

Previously, in this past summer season, some of the people who Kaepernick stands with, started an organization called, “I'm With Kap.” Kaepernick has also been designing T-shirts for kids and young adults that says, “I Know My Rights.” This man has influenced grown adults, college students, high school students, and even children in the third grade to participate in this protest. Recently, our President Donald J. Trump made a speech at a press conference talking about how great it is to see some teams locking arms and standing for the National Anthem, and how some players think it is okay to disrespect the United States of America. Also, Golden State Warriors Point Guard Stephen Curry made an insulting comment to our president. Not only Stephen Curry, but Golden State Warriors Small Forward Kevin Durant, and Cleveland Cavaliers Power Forward LeBron James have been insulting the president about refusing to stand for the National Anthem.

Conclusion

Now, most people know the reasons why Colin Kaepernick protested during the anthem at every NFL game he played in last year. Since his protest has started over a year ago, the population of it is rising as the weeks go by. In most opinions, lots of people and followers of his protest want him back in the NFL.

State of the New York Knicks

by Liam DeVos

The New York Knicks have had a rough time in the NBA since the turn of the decade. They had some good teams during 2011-2013, but were not able to beat the Miami Heat's Big three. They’ve had players such as Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, Tyson Chandler, Iman Shumpert, Wilson Chandler and J.R Smith during that time. Those have been the best Knicks teams since the 1990s led by Patrick Ewing.

The Knicks now, in 2017, have just traded Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Enes Kanter and Doug McDermott. As a Knicks fan, it really hurt at first because Melo has been the face of the Knicks since they acquired him in 2011 from the Denver Nuggets. But overall I feel this is a great move by the Knicks. There is little to no chance they are in title contention at the moment. There is nobody stopping the Golden State Warriors right now except for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The only way someone is beating the Warriors in the Western Conference is if one or more of the Warriors players sustains injury. In that case, maybe the Thunder, the San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Rockets, or, the Minnesota Timberwolves could have a chance.

It seems that the Knicks are in their rebuilding phase, with up and coming superstar, Kristaps Porzingis who was picked fourth in the 2015 NBA Draft looks to take over as leader of the team. In his first two years in the League he has averaged 16.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.4 assists with a 43.6% shooting on the floor and 34.6% shooting from three. With Melo gone, he looks to become the leader in New York coming into the 2017-2018 NBA Season. Porzingis is a 22 year old, seven foot three inch power-forward born in Latvia. He has been playing basketball since six years old, and has played for many European teams before jumping to the NBA. When Porzingis was first drafted, many people didn't like the move made by former Knicks president Phil Jackson. Soon, he proved doubters wrong with a solid rookie year. Now every Knick fan is depending on this young superstar to carry the Knicks organization.

The Knicks are also looking to make a splash with their new point-guard, Frank Ntilikina. The Knicks drafted him with the eighth pick in 2017's stacked draft with such prospects as Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, De'Aaron Fox, Jonathan Isaac, and Dennis Smith Jr. Frank is a 19 year old born in Ixelles, Belgium, but he moved to France when he was three years old. He is six foot five, with a seven foot wingspan. He has played for SIG Strasbourg from 2015-2017. During his time playing in France he averaged 21.8 points, 6.7 assists and 3.2 steals per 40 minutes played. He also played for the 18U French National Team and won the 2016 U18 FIBA Euros in which he won MVP of the entire tournament. Knicks fans around New York and especially me are patiently awaiting his debut on Thursday, October 19th, 2017 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

So Overall, the Knicks may not be winning any finals anytime soon, but it is 100% guaranteed that I will be a New York Knicks fan until I die.

National Basketball Association Update

by Eden Price

Do you like the NBA? Well, if you do this is the place to come to. Carmelo Anthony, who was a Knicks superstar for years, has been traded to Oklahoma City Thunder. Also, this year Paul George from the Indiana Pacers was traded to Oklahoma City Thunder. Now, 2017 MVP Russell Westbrook is now paired up with 6’9 Paul George and 6’7 Carmelo Anthony. So far their preseason games have been going really well with two wins and one loss.

Earlier this summer the Cavaliers and the Celtics made a huge trade, trading star point guard Kyrie Irving to the Celtics in return for Isaiah Thomas. Dwyane Wade from the Chicago Bulls was traded to the Cavaliers. Derrick Rose was also traded to the Cavaliers. ESPN has ¨high hopes for The Cavaliers, The Golden State Warriors, and Oklahoma City Thunder.¨

As the NBA season begins we will start seeing which teams will most likely make the playoffs. One team that brought in a lot of players this year was the Cavaliers. They now have Dwyane Wade, Isaiah Thomas, and Derrick Rose. They had LeBron James before this season and he is still on the team. What team are you looking forward to seeing?

Disney Kingdom Keepers Book 1: Disney after Dark

by Madison Gangi

Ever wonder what happens at night after the park closes?

This is a fantastic thriller written by Ridley Pearson. Five 13 year old children are chosen to be Disney hosts. With Disney’s new technology they are turned into DHI’s which stands for Disney Host Interactives. These hologram projections are used to tour people around the Magic Kingdom. This new technology has unexpected effects. For instance when Finn, Maybeck, Philby, Willa and Charlene go to sleep they wake up it Disney World. Sounds cool, right? The whole park to yourself! However at night the park is invaded with dangerous Disney villains who are plotting to capture Disney. The 5 kids meet Wayne at night in Disney. Wayne is an old imagineer who knew Walt Disney. He tells them that the park is in grave danger. Wayne shares information about a puzzle made by Walt Disney that can save the park. He tells them it’s their job to solve the puzzle. During the search for clues the five kids have encounters with Maleficent and many overtakers, which are Disney villains, people or things programmed to listen to Maleficent.

I would highly recommend this book. The scenes are described so well. When the kids encounter Maleficent you can feel their fear. The book is so in depth and detailed that you are fascinated by the author's thought process. Once you get into to the book you won’t be able to put it down. Also the puzzles are so intricate. Watching the kids figure it out is truly amazing. You would wonder if you would ever think of how the clues connect. If you love Disney, adventure, technology or mysteries this is the book for you. If you are a Disney fan this book takes place in Disney it also has real Disney characters in the book. The book also sneaks in a bunch of Disney fun facts and secrets throughout the story. One of my favorite things about this book was all the information on Disney technology. This book talks a lot about hologram technology. Also the book talks a little about the different technology in the parks and rides. The Stonecutter's quill is a puzzle left behind by Walt Disney. The puzzle is a great big mystery. It is awesome to see the Kingdom Keepers try to figure it out. Every time the Kingdom Keepers go to sleep they go on a great big adventure, filled with pirates, the dolls from It’s Small World, dark fairies and more. This is a must read for everyone. You can take books one through five out from the school library.

Maze Runner Book Review

by Erin Finnerty

Book Title: The Maze Runner

Author: James Dashner

Summary:

Thomas, a sixteen year old, wakes up in the middle of a maze without any memory of his past life. He’s trapped with around forty other boys who’ve been there for about two years, each boy arriving every month in a metal box. Only a week after he arrives, another person arrives-which has never happened so soon. And it isn’t just any person- it’s a girl, the first to ever arrive. And the girl has a message- that the end is near for all of them if they don’t escape the Maze soon. Soon, strange things start happening and it becomes a struggle to finally escape and figure out who and what put them there. Will they make it?

General Information:

Is it a part of a series? Yes, this is the first book out of four books in the Maze Runner series.

How many pages are in the book? This book is 375 pages, with 62 chapters.

Who should read this?

This book is a great book to read for anyone who loves the mystery, adventure, science-fiction, or dystopian (Can imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant.) genres. If you’ve ever read ‘The Hunger Games’ this is good for you to read because it has the same amount of action and suspense that makes you want to keep reading. If you don’t like anything too gory, there are only a few short parts of this happening, so it isn’t unbearable. The reading level isn’t very hard, even though occasionally there are a few tricky words.

What genres does it fall under?

This book is a great book to read for anyone who loves the mystery, adventure, science-fiction, or dystopian genres.

Setting:

This book is set sometime in the future in the maze that the forty boys are trapped in. It mainly focuses on the glade, the center of the maze and where the boys live. There’s also some exploring in the other parts of the maze, but that’s pretty much where it all happens. The author describes this book in a way that you can visualize the setting and what’s happening very easily.

Theme:

A theme of this book is working together, since the boys are now pressed for time in escaping before it’s too late. Another theme that fits with this book is doing what you think is right because at one point in the story, Thomas has to make a decision whether to go against what everyone’s telling him or not.

What was done well:

One thing I did like the author's style for this book because you got to see what Thomas, the main character, was thinking and you felt like you were in the same position or having the same questions as him throughout the story. This also allows you to get the same experience as if you were in the Glade with them. I also liked how the story fell under many of the genres mentioned above, making the story have variety. Another plus was that all the characters were different in personalities (friendly, mean, crazy) and in ages (ranging from 12-18), and this helps you understand what the characters going through even more.

What could have been done better:

What I would’ve wanted to be better is having the suspenseful parts held out more to make it even more suspenseful. The other thing was if you accidentally skipped a page, you would be completely lost to what happened and would be spoiled on the upcoming parts. I think this was a result of not having the suspenseful parts held out enough.

My opinion:

All in all, I thought the book was very intriguing, funny, and enjoyable. If I had to give this book a star rating, five stars being great, one star being horrible, I would give anywhere between a four and five stars because of the intriguing parts being too short and the book overall being very mysterious, addictive, and comical, which is one of my favorite genres.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review

by Ryan Eck

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was definitely the right choice for a Switch launch title. This open-world game is one of the best games Nintendo has released in years. All of the delays were worth it, and it is one of the greatest games currently on the Switch and Wii U. Here’s a review of the Nintendo Switch version of Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Open-World Excellence

This game’s world is absolutely full of secrets and the amount of content is very admirable. It will leave you exploring for hours, and with how gorgeous and full of life the world is, it will definitely be an amazing time. The game does not hold your hand at all. After going through a small section, trying to do some tasks, the rest of the world is free for you to roam and explore. Heck, you can even go to the final boss right after this. It gives you the objective immediately. You will likely not defeat the final boss, but the freedom is nice.

Throughout the first hundred hours of exploration, something new will always be found. There are many side quests, shrines that act as small puzzles that let you upgrade your health or stamina, and collectables called Korok seeds. The world has many villages you can interact with, obstacles in the geography, enemies, and optional bosses found in the overworld. The amount of amazing content and depth in this world is absolutely remarkable.

The story of the game is also well done. There is a lot to it, which is discovered via memories that you have to search the overworld for. The general goal is mainly to defeat the Calamity Ganon, but there is much more to it then that. The progression of the plot is good as it requires you to explore the world to continue into the game, whether it is doing a task, finding the memories, or just going to one place marked on the map. It should also be noted that the game does not lack direction. It definitely does not hold your hand, but it is easy to know where to go thanks to the way the way the quest system works, where you are given the overview of what you have to do, and the ways the non-playable characters can help you.

The graphics of the game are mostly decent. The game looks absolutely gorgeous, but there are some minor problems. The backgrounds, character models, and artstyle all make the game look distinct and beautiful, but some of the textures lack polish or do not have enough texture. Some of the ground, particularly things like snow or occasionally the shorter grass, look rather unpolished and incomplete. They still look competent, but not excellent compared to everything else.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Breath of the Wild is excellent for what it is. Even with the stubby joysticks of the Joy-Cons, moving around in the game is still comfortable. There are many abilities you can do that add more depth.

Combat is a notable highlight. The way that it controls is great and it requires a good amount of strategy. The weapon durability system helps add more depth, and while at times it can be annoying, it is still a good feature. It makes you have to think about what weapons to use in combat and when. However, it should be said that there are occasional frame-rate drops here and there when fighting, and sometimes when you are not as well. It is not too bad, and other than those hiccups the game performs really well, but it is something to note.

Verdict

Breath of the Wild is an excellent open-world game. It gets basically everything correct. Sure, it has some performance hiccups, but it overall is a fabulous game. The game has an admirable amount of content and a great amount of hours can be put in it. It is one of the best games on both the Switch and the Wii U. Whether on the Switch or Wii U, this game should be bought. It is absolutely worth the purchase.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Review

by Ryan Eck

Many of the Nintendo Switch’s games within its first year were ports. Many indie games were ported to the eShop, and in late-April, an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 was released, entitled Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. This game featured all of the content of the Wii U hit, plus all of the downloadable content, new characters, game mechanics, and a completely revamped Battle Mode, this time featuring original tracks and different game modes. This game, alongside the other Wii U ports that may come to the Switch, are mainly for people to experience games that they missed out on, since the Wii U was a financial failure. However, for those who had a Wii U and bought Mario Kart 8, is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe worth getting?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Racing on the Switch

As stated before, Deluxe is an enhanced port, being an expansion of the original Mario Kart 8. There is the standard Grand Prix mode, Time Trials mode, and there are some different Multiplayer modes. Grand Prix has the player racing through four tracks, trying to beat their opponents. It can be a really good time, and serves as a good campaign-like mode for the game. Time Trials is a mode where you can attempt to go through a track all by yourself, without any opponents. It is a nice addition if you want to just go through the courses alone.

Multiplayer modes consist of regular couch multiplayer, online play, or wireless play, which lets you play on two different Switches as long as they are close to each other. Wireless play could be good for friends who do not like split-screen and own a copy of the game. Online play in the original Mario Kart 8 was rather bare-bones. It lacked many features such as being able to switch your character or vehicle in between matches. That feature finally made its way into the game with Deluxe, and it is a very welcome addition. Couch multiplayer is just that. People can play with each other with split-screen, and it is good if you are playing with other people on just one Switch.

For all of these modes, you can play Battle or VS. VS. is just regular racing, and it is really fun. The tracks are well-designed and the controls are good. Battle was one of the weaker parts of Mario Kart 8. Rather than coming up with new tracks, the mode simply used sections of the tracks that were in VS. There were also not many types of battles you can play. Deluxe’s revamped Battle Mode is a great addition. There is Balloon Battle, which has you battling and when you are hurt, you lose a balloon, Coin Runners, where you try to steal people’s coins, Bob-omb Blast, where you are trying to throw bob-ombs at your opponents, Shine Thief, where you chase a person with the shine, and try to retrieve it using items, and Renegade Roundup, where one team tries to roundup the other team and put them in jail cells by throwing items at them. These modes are plenty of fun and help give variety to the Battle Mode. Bob-omb Blast has to be the weakest one, however. It does not really require strategy and is a bit too crazy for its own good. Shine Thief and Renegade Roundup are highlights of this mode. They feel unique, even if they are loosely based on real world games, and are incredibly fun. The new tracks for the mode are really good as well, and fit the games in a good way.

The game’s visuals are absolutely amazing. It is only a slight change from the Wii U game, but it still looks gorgeous nonetheless. The backgrounds look vibrant and beautiful, the character models look well-textured and polished, and the tracks look excellent.

Controls

The controls for the game are mostly good. There are many ways to play, whether it is using two Joy Cons vertically, one sideways, two in Handheld Mode, or using the Pro Controller, they are all decent. Using one Joy Con sideways is the worst, though. It is still good, but the shoulder buttons are used heavily, and without the wrist strap, they can be a bit of a pain to press. It can also feel rather tight and can cramp your hands. With the wrist strap, it feels much better. There is also motion controls in the game, and they also work really well.

In terms of game mechanics, there are a couple of new ones that add extra depth. There is auto-acceleration, where you do not need to hold down a button to drive, and smart steering, where you will not be able to fall off the map. The best thing about these however, is that smart steering completely fixes 200cc. In the original Wii U game, 200cc was way too fast for its own good, and it made the game not fun as you would keep driving into boundaries or off the map. With smart steering however, 200cc is actually a good time.

Worth Double-Dipping?

For Wii U owners who played Mario Kart 8, the most important question is whether or not Deluxe is worth it. Honestly, it definitely is. Sure, for those who purchased the downloadable content of Mario Kart 8, there are no new VS. tracks, but there is an entirely new Battle Mode that is a major improvement from the original version, new characters, and more. The port offers a lot of new content. The new characters help give more variety to the game. There are still characters with a lazy aesthetic, like Pink Gold Peach or Gold Mario, but they are less noticeable now thanks to the new additions to the roster. It is also very important to note that the Switch is portable, and has many ways to play that may cause new experiences with the game compared to the original. Playing a portable Mario Kart 8 alone makes this great, but with all the other new content, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is absolutely worth purchasing.

Verdict

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is most certainly worth getting, whether you owned Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U or not. It fixes nearly all the flaws of the original version, as well as adding more depth and a really fun Battle Mode. Deluxe is an excellent racing game and is a must-have for the Switch.

Nintendo Switch

by Chris Schimkus (Schimmy)

Nintendo has an interesting way of releasing their products. First came the Wii’s wireless motion controller, then came the Wii U’s tablet-style gamepad. Now Nintendo has released the Nintendo Switch, a portable game player that anyone may take wherever they go.

What is the Nintendo Switch?

The Switch is a mixture of basically two Wii remotes and then a mini Wii U gamepad. The size for this may seem very big but the size for the Switch is actually 6.2 inches and it weighs about 297 grams. It actually is surprising how small the pad and controllers all fit in one. This is because there are little holes to fit the controllers to the pad of the Nintendo Switch. For the battery life status, the Switch would last to up for about two and a half hours if not that charged, and up to six hours if fully charged.

The price is around $299.99. It may not seem that fair of a price, but that is how most of the Nintendo products are sold. So you now may be wondering if you should buy the Switch,(if you can afford it) but hold that thought for a second. There has been many reviews about how the Switch keeps malfunctioning, this is because the Switch hasn't been around for that long so Nintendo is still trying to fix those bugs.

Despite the Switch’s sleek build, the one anomaly is its kickstand. While the console is made from metal, the kickstand is plastic and incredibly thin. The fact that the kickstand can also only allow for one viewing angle is disappointing. Nintendo’s reasoning behind this design is that it’s taken into account our stupidity. If one attempts to dock the console without closing the kickstand, it’ll snap off (without actually breaking), and can easily be reattached. Nintendo warns against constant wear-and-tear, though.

What is the Joy-Con?

The Joy-Con is mainly the two remotes on the side of the Switch that look like Wii remotes. To remove the Joy-Cons, one must simply press two buttons that are on the back of the pad and then the controllers will be released. When the Joy-Cons are released a little clicking noise will be activated to show the Joy-Cons are released. Docking and removing the Joy-Con controllers is easy enough. However, while the console plays this noise to let one know the Joy-Con is docked, this noise alone doesn’t mean the controller is safely attached. There’s a separate, mechanical click that should be heard when the controller is locked in place.

As the Joy-Con slide onto the Switch from the top down, this is a pretty important thing for users to be aware of to avoid the Switch dropping from the Joy-Con – and dodging plenty of tears as the shiny new console gets shattered on the floor.

The dock, meanwhile, is quite chunky, and includes a flap at the rear to hide the HDMI, power adapter and USB ports. Following the launch of the console, a number of users have reported various problems with it, including it scratching the console’s display.

What are the pros and cons of the Switch?

The Nintendo Switch is sold out mostly everywhere because it is on the top toy list of this year. While there are many mixed reviews, it is worth buying the Nintendo Switch because it’s all about great games, not the console itself. The way the joy-con controllers fit in each hand make them good for playing lengthy games. The Switch is portable and it doesn’t take much time to load a game to start playing. It also features dozens and dozens kinds of games, including sword fighting, baseball, cow milking, etc.

What you probably won’t like is there is no way of syncing the Nintendo Switch to the TV without wires so always use an HDMI cable to connect the Switch. Plus, there’s no bluetooth so it can’t be connected to a headset wirelessly.

People slowly but surely have been won over by the charm of the Switch. Its versatility and accessibility make it a joy to play, particularly as a portable machine. With Nintendo swiftly addressing people's biggest concern with the hardware, it’s hard to argue this console isn’t absolutely brimming with potential in the months to come.

Call of Duty World War 2 or Battlefield 1?

by Cormac Hale

Which is better? Call of Duty World War 2 or Battlefield 1? Many people bought the beta for both, but most like Battlefield 1 multiplayer better. But the people who have the Call of Duty beta says it is a complete disappointment. I did have the Battlefield 1 beta but was unsuccessful to lay my hands on a Call of Duty beta. I have heard that the campaign is amazing. Battlefield 1 campaign was not as good. It would have been great if they added a few dramatic trench combat missions with British “Tommies.” On a different note I am happy that Call of Duty is reverting back to its old ways like Call of Duty 2, classic, and Call of Duty 3. I really like how Call of Duty is doing an American-Jewish POW. I think that Battlefield and Call of Duty have their ups and downs, but all-in-all, I think Call of Duty will be a “blast”!

2001: A Space Odyssey Review

by Victor Paduano

Up to this point, I have never seen films that have tackled larger-than-life themes of mankind’s unavoidable destiny. That all changed when I saw the 1968 space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey this Columbus Day weekend. It may not be my favorite movie (that honor goes to Walt Disney’s Fantasia), but it is definitely in my “Top Five.” The genius of this movie is hard to comprehend even for an avid film fan like myself, but I will try my hardest to explain why this film is a work of art.

The story follows a group of five astronauts led by Dr. Dave Bowman and Dr. Frank Poole on their escapade to Jupiter to discover life beyond Earth, eighteen months after a separate group of astronauts discovered a mysterious black monolith on the moon. Out of the five astronauts, three are put in suspended animation. Since the three astronauts can not operate their ship, the Discovery One, HAL 9000, the ship’s computer, is in control of the spacecraft. When Poole and Bowman talk about their suspicions of HAL in one of the ship’s pods and plans to deactivate him, HAL is able to read their lips and plans to dispose of the crew one by one in order to prevent them from “interfering” with the mission. The story may sound simplistic, but it delves into powerful themes like human evolution, artificial intelligence, and, like I stated at the beginning of this review, the destiny of mankind. Also, many elements in this film (especially the beautiful, yet mind-boggling ending) are left ambiguous, and even though that may bother some, I actually liked the mystery surrounding the film a lot.

However, it’s not just the story that makes this film a masterpiece; the filmmaking in this is something truly special. The director of this film, Stanley Kubrick, is widely regarded as one of the greatest movie directors in history because of this film and many others he has made over has forty year career as a filmmaker. Everything from his direction and special effects, to Geoffrey Unsworth’s cinematography, to Ray Lovejoy’s editing, is absolute gold. This film captures the look and feeling of space better than any other film I have ever seen. Along with the fantastic imagery, it is also accompanied by an amazing score. Some of the pieces are haunting and ominous, while others are grand and powerful, with two of the best examples being Richard Strauss’s iconic “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and Johann Strauss II’s “Blue Danube Waltz”.

The characters in this film are something I didn’t expect I would like; they were expressionless and practically devoid of human emotion. This might sound like a major flaw, but I actually like that Kubrick made sure the audience did not get too attached to the characters before things turn for the worst. Ironically, the character who shows the most emotion is HAL 9000. Despite being a computer, he shows human traits like feeling vengeful or fearful, but that does not mean he can be terrifyingly monotone and heartless, and Douglas Rain does an excellent doing the voicework for HAL. In fact, after watching this film, HAL 9000 is one of my favorite film villains of all time, who is up there with the likes of Darth Vader and The Joker from The Dark Knight.

Overall, despite the fact that 2001: A Space Odyssey might be offputting to some, I suggest you watch it at least once in your lifetime. It is one of cinema’s greatest achievements and a masterwork in the art of moviemaking. This is a film you will never forget and one I highly recommend.

Lord of the Rings Movie Review

by Karn Jaswal and Aidan Dubyn

The Lord of The Rings, directed by Peter Jackson and based on the epic novel by J.R.R Tolkien, is a must-see movie. The three movies to rule them all.

SUMMARY

The Lord of the Rings movies are about Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry, and Pippin (hobbits-a smaller human or cousin to men), Legolas the elf, Gimli the dwarf, and Strider and Boromir of the race of men. They are on a quest to destroy the One Ring, a powerful object, in the chasm of Mount Doom. They also along the way have to fight the forces of Sauron, the Dark Lord, and his army of orcs and trolls.

SCRIPT

The writing of the story is great. The plot makes sense, and fits in with the rest of the story. There are many scenes that have been “adapted” from the books. However, they have no effects on the movies. One can quickly understand the personality of each character very quickly. The dialogue really does represent the characters in their own way.

VISUAL EFFECTS, MAKEUP, AND MUSIC

The visual effects are amazing, and captures the beauty of Middle Earth. It was a brilliant choice to cast the movies in New Zealand. The makeup of the orcs (goblins) is just great! The music is absolutely phenomenal also and guarantees anyone would sit in their seat! It was a nice classical tone, that sounds very dark and scary.

INTERESTING FUN FACTS

Fun fact, The Lord of the rings movies may have come out a year apart, but they were all filmed at the same time. Another fun fact, Elijah Wood, or Frodo, went into the woods over and over, practiced, and filmed the opening scene of “The Fellowship of the Ring” to convince Peter Jackson that he should get the lead role of Frodo Baggins.

Overall, this series is a really option if you love fantasy and adventure. The story is phenomenal. The actors do a great job acting. You’ll be rooting for Frodo in this action-packed series. It’s a great series to marathon, you know, if you have 9.3 hours free.

Saving Private Ryan Movie Review

by Cormac Hale

In my opinion, the most realistic, dramatic, and best World War II movie ever is Saving Private Ryan. The movie is full of dramatic deaths and does nothing more than make war disgusting to its highest level. The beginning scene shows a graveyard in Normandy, France where an elderly man, Private Ryan, looks at the grave of a fallen soldier. Then it goes back to June 6, 1944, which was D-Day. Then it shows Captain Miller’s, or Tom Hanks, landing craft. After a brutal 20 minutes of that scene they move on to try and find Ryan from a recent telegram. The final part was the saddest: The battle of Ramelle. Ramelle was a French town where Ryan’s airborne battalion landed.

Warning Spoiler Alert!!!

The brutal fight ended after the deaths of almost all of Captain Miller’s squad, including Captain Miller himself. Ryan lives and when Miller is shot, he destroys a tank with a pistol, along with the help of American P51-Mustang planes. Ryan rushes over to help Miller but Miller only points at Ryan’s heart and says “Be a good man.” The end of the movie is when Ryan starts to cry in the graveyard and asks his wife if he had been a good man. So, if you want action, drama and gore, I believe you would appreciate Saving Private Ryan.

How to Cope with Between-Season Stress

by Erin Tumminello

You’ve been waiting for the next episodes of your favorite show to be released for months, and it finally came out. You binged all of it the day it came out. You feel somewhat satisfied, besides that nagging unanswered question that the new episodes left behind. But then, you realize that you’ve finished the season, and it may be spring before the next one comes out. But you need answers now! How will you survive?!

Do not worry, whoever you are, reading this article. I feel your pain. (Unless you’re reading this just because. But I suggest you hold on to this so you have it when you get to that point between those seasons of that one TV show that you love…) I have created a list of things to do that will help you with this terrible feeling, which I have dubbed “Between-Season Stress.”

Talk about it.

Even if the fandom is small, there is probably some person you know who watches the same show as you. It will be especially easy if you watch that show with someone else, like a family member or close friend. Find whoever it is and talk to them about how you felt about that season. Share opinions, talk about new or old characters, mention a few theories… which will bring us along to the next tip:

Theories!

Theories are great. Usually based on past events, they are predictions, or sometimes just awesome and crazy ideas, that a person comes up with, sharing what they think will happen later in the show. “Hey, I think that guy is a clone!” You’ll also probably find good theories on the internet, but I warn you, some theories might be spoilery to the next coming season, and/or it might have bad language.

YouTube

There are lots of YouTubers out there, and there’s a good chance that quite a few of them are part of your fandom, and that they have posted videos about that show. Another warning; as long as they’ve watched the show or don’t mind spoilers, you may want a parent to watch the video first to make sure that there’s nothing inappropriate. The video might also spoil the next season or seasons. Also, if you don’t want to risk anything, or if you just don’t feel like going on YouTube, make your own video. If you have a YouTube account, then you can even publish your video (with a parent’s permission)! If you don’t have a YouTube account, or if you can’t watch YouTube in general, that’s ok! You can still make a video just for fun, and you can show it to people who watch the show.

Distract yourself.

As much as you love that specific TV show, and as loyal as you are to it, maybe try to keep your mind off of it. Try and shift your interest to something else. Start watching a new show, for example. Don’t worry, doing this doesn’t make you less of a fan of the original show. Watching something else will help you focus on other things besides the fact that you won’t be seeing that 5th season in a while.

Get involved in something

Nobody wants to feel like the next season of their show is forever away. So participate in a club. Join a sports team. Do a long-term thing that will help time fly. Maybe even school can help with this, as it sometimes feels like the school year goes by quickly. Do whatever is necessary to make the weeks or months pass at what seems to be a faster rate. You can also keep track of holidays that are coming, which gives you smaller pieces of time to focus on to make everything feel like it’s going faster. Make sure you do something that you enjoy though, because doing of the age-old saying; “Time flies when you’re having fun!”

Find the pattern!

Sometimes, the season release dates have a pattern. For example, let’s say Season 2 came out about 8 months after Season 1, and Season 3 came out about 8 months after Season 2. As you can see, there is an 8 month pattern. So whenever this new season was released, count 8 months from there, and that’s probably going to be the month you’ll be looking forward to, TV-wise. Now that you know the general month, you can…

Begin the countdown!

Take the month that you think the next season is going to be released in. Then take the last day of that month (It depends; it can be the 31st, 30th, 28th, or the occasional 29th on leap years). Then, if the months are close enough together, look at a calendar and count the days until the end of that sacred month. If the months are far apart, or if you just want to save time, whip out any device with the internet, and look up, for example, “How many days are there until June 30th 2018?” BOOM. Now, keep track of the days. Use a dry erase board or anything that you’d want to use to count down. Put it in a place that you’ll remember, and be sure to update it every day, or else you might lose count, which will be annoying. Once you get further information about when the season is coming, like the exact release date for example, you can change it however you need to.

Soon, your countdown will be reduced to 0. The beloved day, your special day, will come. You’ve waited all this time, so now celebrate. YES! Get on that couch! Get that TV remote! BINGE LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Remember, don’t sweat it. Besides, however long it took you to read this, your new season is already drawing closer. So go share some theories, make some videos, get that countdown going, because you can break through that between-season stress!

The Future of Sega

by Stephen DiFilippo

In November of this year, we are getting a new Sonic Game for the Nintendo Switch PlayStation and the Xbox One. Some people think it's a really good game and they´re calling it Sonic Adventure 3. Other people think it will never succeed.

Three months ago, Sega posted a trailer saying that they would bring back old titles like CrazyTaxi Jet Set Radio and Nights. In this trailer it seems they're hinting at a new console. Enthusiastic Sega fans started Project Dream to try to convince the company to make a new console called the Sega Spartan. They started a petition and have sent it to Sega. In my opinion, Sega is going to have a few things changed like the controller. They have two designs. One design looks like an Xbox 360 controller and one looks like an N64 controller but with two grips on the side. In the past three months, all Sega has done is port their Dreamcast and Genesis games with other companies' consoles. Sega could really port all their games from their older consoles and make games like Sonic Adventure 3, CrazyTaxi 3, or a new All Stars game.

For the past sixteen years, Sega has been making only Sonic games with the rare port to Microsoft PlayStation or Nintendo consoles. Sonic has been keeping the company alive. Without Sonic, the company would be dead and I think that is why they're being looked down on by other video game developers like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. But, with the release of The Spartan they might be able to make sequels to their older games. If Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony want to make even more money they could port their games to the the Sega Spartan. In my opinion, Sega's master plan is to develop third party games and put them on Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo consoles. A third party is a company that makes games for other companies. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony will do the same thing and develop games for Sega Spartan. It will benefit all the companies when Sega releases the console and most of the games while still making games for Xbox PlayStation and Switch.

The Parable of the Man and his brother

“So Cain arose, and taketh from the earth, and brought his bounty to young Abel. As they toiled making much together, the eldest said My Brother, behold your possessions, machine and guns, How be they greater than what I hath wrought? Then Abel scoffed and boasted jubliant, and conquered lands for silver and for spice, He built great ships to transport the spoils. When lo! The Lord called unto them in turn, Saying, blessing upon thee and thine, but none I bestow on your brother. Behold, His armies on the brink of thy kingdom; Greet them with gas and shells instead of words. So each man did so, and killed the other, Both believing in God’s favor”

Whisper

by Sofia Santiago

I looked up to the sky to see the sun rising on the horizon. My hands touched the rough panels of the roof as I climbed down back into my room. My sheets were messily laid out on my bed like they had been before. I tiptoed to my bed and opened my book. In the back it said in faded lettering, “Property of Abby Baker.¨

You have been my friend,¨ replied Charlotte. “That in itself is a tremendous thing.” I had read that line over and over, that I knew it by heart. I remembered how my mother, Khloe Baker, would read the book to me and how, when we would watch the movie, we would reenact the scenes like we were the characters. It was my mother's favorite book and the only thing I had left of her.

After my mom had passed away, a week before I turned 13, there was no one else to take care of me. I was going to be sent into foster care but my aunt, whom my mom never talked to, had volunteered. My aunt’s name is Kristine Baker. I had never met her before, mostly because my mom had never visited.

I walked down the wooden spiral stairs. Thirteen steps. I hear giggling behind me. I walk behind the stairs. I hear giggling again but behind the basement door. I open the door and look down. I switch on the lights.

“Shhh”

“Hello, is anyone down there?”

“Boo,” Adrian said, coming up from behind me. I jolted. My aunt had two boys, a three year old named Adrian and an older one that was five years old, named Nicholas.

“Adrian… you scared me,¨I said taking a breath.

“What are you doing?,¨ Aunt Khloe said coming from the hallway.

“Oh…. I just. I just thought someone was down there, I heard something.”

“Oh. don't worry, it's an old house. You'll hear things all the time.”

I walked into the kitchen. I grabbed the Frosted Flakes and the milk and poured it into the bowl. I sat down at the table and looked out the window. The sun had just risen over the horizon and it was shining through the windows.

I threw my bowl into the sink and ran back up upstairs. I passed by Adrian's room.

I peeked through Adrian’s half-open door.

“You're my friend, right?”

I opened the door. “Who you talkin’ to?,” I said staring at the empty chair across from him that he was staring at.

“Oh just Charlie,” he replied turning toward me.

“Who’s Charlie?”

“Oh, he's just my friend.”

“Can I see Charlie?.” I asked walking toward Adrian.

“Well,” Adrian said looking toward the empty chair, “He's pretty shy.” I looked toward the empty chair that Adrian was staring at.

“Well then... when he’s not feeling shy, tell him I want to meet him,” I said with a smile.

Adrian turned toward me with a smile. “Okay.”

I wake up to the sound of footsteps. I turn to my side and look at the alarm clock that sits on the corner of my night table. 3:15. It's probably Adrian. I turn back around and rest my head on my pillow. I close my eyes. I hear footsteps once again. He stops right in front of my room. He knocks on my door loudly.

I get up from my bed and walk to the door. He knocks loudly again and I say, “Ughhh, Adrian go to sleep already it's three in th-” I open the door and there's no one there. I look down the pitch black hallway and don't see Adrian in sight. I hear someone giggle down the hall. I squint to try to see who it was.

“Adrian?... Adrian, is that you?,” I whispered. “Adrian is that you? Come here!” I take a step out of my room and into the hallway.

I hear something breathing heavily in the darkness.

My heart starts to beat out of my chest.

I start to breathe faster as footsteps came toward me.

“Who’s there?,”I said in a shaky voice. The breathing just got even louder. It was so heavy that I felt against my chest.

I run back into my room and shut my door. I run to my bed and pull the covers over my head. My heart pounded out of my chest. I shut my eyes.

I walked into the kitchen in the morning to see Aunt Khloe cutting up apple slices. “Good morning Abby,” Aunt Khloe said putting the apples into a bowl. She looked up at me, “Oh Abby honey are you okay?¨ She rushed over to me.

“Yeah I'm fine. I just didn't sleep that much last night,” I said in a shaky voice.

“Oh, well then why don't you rest then? I was going to go to the supermarket in a little bit. The boys have a birthday party to go to. Do you wanna stay here to rest a little?”

“Uhh… yeah, sure,” I responded.

I looked over at the basement door. I was sure I had heard something before. I know I wasn't crazy.

“Okay,” she said walking back to the kitchen.

I walked into the living room and sat on the couch. The trees brushed against the window making a scratching sound.

“I'm going to start heading out now okay honey?,” Aunt Khloe said.

“Okay.”

“I'm going to drop off the boys and go to the supermarket. I'll be back by four”

“Okay.”

“Make sure not to answer the door for anyone and don't answer the phone, okay?,¨ she said trying to make eye contact with me.

I turned my head toward her, “Okay.”

She shut the door and immediately the house fell silent. The only thing you could hear was the scratching of the branches and the TV.

I started to get tired and rested my head on the pillow. Eventually I fell into a deep sleep.

I looked over at the cable box. 2:15. I had been sleeping for four hours. I sat up on the couch and looked over at the TV. The Big Bang Theory was playing. Just when Sheldon found out that Leonard was moving into Penny's apartment the TV started to glitch. It turned off and the whole house fell silent. I grabbed the remote and clicked the power button. The TV wasnt turning on. Creeeeakk. The basement door cracked opened. I got up from the couch and walked over to the stairs.

¨Hello? Is-is anyone down there?¨ I hear footsteps walking around in the basement. I can see my breath as it starts to get colder. I wrap my arms around my body to warm myself. I walk down the creaky stairs as my hands become frozen.

¨He- hello¨, I said. I turned on the lights. I walked into Aunt Khloe’s sewing room. It was dark and the light was shining through a small window on the corner of the room wall. Swoosh. I quickly turn around to see no one there. Swoosh. I turn around and there's no one there. My hands start to become icy cold as I walk back toward the door. As I reach for the handle, the door slams shut. I start to breathe faster and frantically walk around the room.

The room feels that it's spinning around in circles over and over again. I start to get dizzy. I run to the door and pull on the knob. It won't budge.

I start to hear someone breathing behind me. I turn around slowly to see a tall, black figure. I stare at it. It's golden yellow eyes stare into my soul. I look straight into it's eyes. It scares me but I stay frozen in place.

The room starts to go dark.

As soon as i think i'm dying, I jolt awake and gasp for air.

The Diary

by Cormac Hale

October 16, 1995

I have tried to tell them but they will not listen. The police, the firemen, even my own wife. But they paid the price. They are now gone along with their wives and children. It came at night and it dragged them away. All of them. I must leave, but nowhere is safe. It watches everything and everyone.

October 17, 1995

It came last night. I heard it slunking up the stairs. I am the last one in my town. I tell myself it is only the wind but I am too smart for that. Whoever finds this diary. Heed this warning: LEAVE NOW AND NEVER COME BACK, ERASE THIS PLACE FROM YOUR MIND. IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE FOR YOU IF YOU STA

“What the heck?” Said Donna.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,”

“Oh stop it. Don’t be a baby” Lucas said.

“ No, we should really go. We can’t just barge into an attic of a home that isn’t even ours” I said.

“Fine, I will just go myself and claim the reward for myself.”

“But Lucas, things are just not the same around here ever since Chet went missing.”

“LIsten I don’t care about that fat blob that went missing. Besides that was three months ago.”

I still remember the last day me and Chet had together. We were selling lemonade for Chet to buy a new skateboard. When we went to buy the skateboard Chet’s wallet slipped and fell into a mailbox. It was the one that no one used. Even the mailman doesn’t visit that box. We weren’t supposed to go reach in. Our teachers said that we would get “tetanus.” After my experience I knew they were just trying to make sure we didn’t find out the truth. So anyway, Chet reached in and then started crying, which never happens, and then when I turned around he was gone.

“So are you coming or not?”

“What did you call him?”

“What, a fat blob?”

“Take it back,” I said.

“I’m not taking it back, you take it back.”

I then tried to slug him. “Why you little..” Lucas said. He then punched me so hard I fell down the stairs. Then I heard something I will never forget. In a hoarse whisper the voice said, I control you.

Jerry the Starfish

by Abigail Ptacek

Once upon a time there was a starfish named Jerry. He loved to do art. He was in kindergarten when his teacher said to paint or use water colors and not to draw. He looked up at the teacher when she told him this and said, ¨Okay.¨ Jerry used the paint and that was his preference. He came home from school and said, ¨Let's go to the art store!¨ Then they went to the store and picked out lots of kid finger paints. As time went by, he went to first, second, third and fourth grade. He started fifth grade and It was almost Christmas! After a few days passed, he walked to bed, stared at the ceiling and realized Christmas was that night! Jerry raced to his mother and said, ¨I NEED TO PUT A LIST OUT!¨ He then grabbed a piece of paper and wrote:

(See image)

Jerry rushed back to bed and asked his mom for a story before bed and a kiss goodnight. He woke up and rushed to the Christmas tree. He opened all his presents one by one. He had come to the last present. He found a treasure map leading to a store for a shopping spree. He knew this had to be from Santa. Turns out when he got there it was all from his mom. Jerry ran over and hugged her so hard. He picked his supplies out and made his way to the cash register and bought the basket of items on the counter. The total was $100.99. He felt so guilty he couldn't help it.

Now Jerry is in college. He is going for his Masters in Art. He wants to show kids what his art teacher taught him. Two years later Jerry became the best art teacher in his district for grade two. He lives a happy life.

The End

Ringing Doorbells

by Maya Zaidman

What if there was actually such things as a school of Witchcraft and Wizardry called Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series? What if most fiction books were real? I always wonder about these things. I spend most of my day at school just trying to figure out answers to my questions. What if… What if… ARRR! I don’t know! I tell my teacher.

“Why don’t you stop wondering about nonsense and start paying attention in class some more?”

Ok. What kind of answer is that? Why can’t someone just tell me the answers to these wonders? Sometimes even the internet doesn’t have the answers. I don’t get it. Why won’t anyone try to get answers? Is there anyone else who thinks the same wonders I do?... I try to forget about wondering and try to focus more for school-there's a test tomorrow in math. Lets try to study unlike before when I spent late at night wondering-and then I don’t have time to study… but again I end up wondering. But-yeah, thats right, I really do! But even if I try all of my resources, I can’t find them … arrrrrrrrrr this is so frustrating.

I don’t get it! It seriously doesn't make sense! That’s until-

Guess what I hear the next day.

“What? I ask as I go down stairs.“

I found some answers to your wonders!”

It was my cousin. She is probably the only one who understands how I feel about my wonders, and the feeling that I need to know now. The answers to your questions of things that go around you in life. I don’t have the exact answers to your questions, but I do have one answer about you- that you are intelligent. You are smart. Now, you need to use your intelligence and think of answers to your wonders. That will make you the smartest no matter what.

Wow…. What she made me feel better for the next couple of days. The words that she told me keep ringing in my head like a person ringing someone else's doorbell over and over again: ¨You are intelligent. You are smart. You are intelligent. You are smart….¨ Until I start to figure out some answers just like that. As if the door finally opened after the person rang the doorbell so much. . . as if the person in the house finally welcomed her in .

Just for Parents

A Parent's Guide to Google Docs

by Aidan Moody

Whether it’s that new-fangled Iphone gadget or the new console that their kids are playing all the time, parents sometimes just don’t get technology. They need assistance in learning how to operate technology their kids use on a daily basis. This article will help them understand it a little more about it by providing information on what their kids are using. For this feature, , the website we are showing parents is none other than Google Docs.

What is Google Drive?

Google Drive is an online writing website used by schools and other writers. It allows society to write important papers, design cool presentations with animations, and much more! It is used by the Massapequa School District in all of the schools, so it is important that parents are familiar with this technological tool. It is easy to share and present in classrooms.

Getting Set Up

First of all you want to type in Google (or any other search engine) ”Google Drive.” Click on the first website that is available. It will take you to a screen where you will click the big blue button that says “Go to Google Drive.” You will then need to put in your email and password. Once you have done that it will take you to a blank drive that will have 8 tabs on the left that say:

My Drives

Team Drives

Shared with Me
Recent

Google Photos

Starred

Trash

Backups

Great. Now you officially have a Google Drive!

Creating Docs and Folders

Once you have finished getting set up, you need to learn what you can do with Google Drive. First what you want to do is go to New and click it. It will give you lots of options but what you will want to do first is create a folder. It is the first tab available. It will tell you to name it. Once you name it, it will automatically put you in the folder. Then you want to create a document. So go back to the new button, and this time, hit the Doc button. It will take you to your document. It will be titled Untitled Document. You want to click it and type in the title you want and press enter. Now, start writing your document.

Customization and Other Cool Tricks

There are so many aspects of your Google Drive, but we will show you the important parts.

You can share your document, presentation, or other piece you are working on by clicking the Share Button in the top right corner. Then just type in their email and set their permissions. The permissions are the setting that allows them to change, make suggestions, or view your piece.

You can also customize your folders. Just go into your folder and click the title of it on the top next to My Drive. You can do many things and you should definitely try them out.

You could also log on to your child's account by tapping your name in the top right corner, clicking sign out, and putting in their email and password. Then you could check on what they are writing without them knowing.

And that is pretty much it. There are tons of other features, but you should figure them out yourself if you take time to learn the system. Just remember to have fun, and read the next article that will be featured in the December/January issue.
