A Message from Mrs. Kaufmann

Dear Funkstown Families,

Kindergarten students will bring home their second marking period report card on Friday, February 5th. Due to the weather related school closings, the distribution dates for report cards has been adjusted. I want to remind you that elementary schools will no longer issue a printed report card following the second marking period. Third marking period report cards and all elementary school report cards thereafter will be issued electronically through the ParentVue website. You will receive a letter with additional information and instructions for how to access ParentVue, if you have not already registered for this service. Please contact the Funkstown office if you need additional assistance. You will find loads of information about the WCPS standards based report card at:

http://wcpsreportcard.weebly.com/parentvue-login.html

If you have questions or concerns, or would like to discuss the information contained in the report card, please contact your child’s teacher.

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Your child’s teacher will send home information about Valentine cards, and other items for a classroom party. According to our policy established at the beginning of the school year children should not bring any candy or other food items to school unless it has been requested or approved by the classroom teacher. Thank you for helping us keep all of our children healthy and safe!

Have a fabulous February!

Mrs. Kaufmann

February Happenings

LITTLE FREE LIBRARY NEWS

Funkstown's Little Free Library will be out of service for a few days while some repair work is being done to the front door. Sorry for the inconvenience but we will have it back in service soon.

WEATHER RELATED SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYS

Winter storm Jonas really set a record!! Not only did we have record snowfall in the area, but we also may have a new record for consecutive number of days missed for snow. No- actually there was a storm back in the mid-90's that also kept WCPS students out of school for a week. Let's hope this is only a once in a 10 year happening!!!

PLEASE REMEMBER: When a two-hour weather delay has been announced for Washington County Public Schools there is NO AM or PM prekindergarten. If school is dismissed two hours early, the AM prekindergarten students who ride a bus to and from school will stay until the early dismissal time to ride the bus home with kindergarten students. Prekindergarten car riders will be dismissed at the regular AM Pre-K dismissal time of 10:45. There will be no PM prekindergarten when there is an early dismissal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please make childcare arrangements well in advance of weather related closings, and be sure your child knows where he/she is to go if school is dismissed early. In the event of weather related closings, the following procedures will be followed:

Final determination of school closing is normally made by 5:30 AM with media notification and posting of information before 6:00 AM. Depending on specific conditions, the timeline may vary. Parents and staff are urged to monitor several sources of information to gain updates as quickly as possible.

The following notification outlets about school closings or delays can be used to get information quickly. In case of a break-down in the communication plan due to power outages or other technical difficulties, parents and staff should be familiar with more than one of the following:

  • Website: www.wcps.k12.md.us You can sign up for text messaging and email alerts from Washington County Public Schools.
  • Radio: WJEJ/1240AM, WCRH/90.5FM, WQCM/94.FM, WIKZ/95.1FM, WAYZ/104.7FM, WFYN/101.5FM, WPPT/92.1FM, WARK/1490AM, WWEG/106.9FM, WLTF/97.5FM
  • Television: WHAG/Hagerstown, WRC/Washington, WUSA/Washington, WBAL/Baltimore
  • Antietam Cable: Channel 99
  • WCPS Central Office Main Line: 301-766-2800

PLEASE HELP US MAINTAIN SAFETY AND SECURITY

When you enter or leave Funkstown School, please make sure the doors are securely closed and locked behind you. We also ask that you do not let others in the door as you are leaving. Our cameras allow the office to see who is at the front door at all times, and to determine if a visitor should enter. Safety and security are the responsibility of everyone.

Please help us out by sending a note to school ahead of time if you will be picking your child up early. This allows us to more effectively monitor the front door entry system and know when we should be expecting a visitor. Thank you in advance for your assistance !

BREAKFAST BUNCH KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS

We want to remind parents that Funkstown School is still participating in the MD Breakfast Challenge and we are hoping to win this award two years in a row. Last year we won $2,000 for being the school with the most students eating breakfast. Please encourage your child (even if they've had something to eat at home) to enjoy breakfast with their classmates each morning. Below are a few pictures of Kindergarten students enjoying breakfast in their classroom.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO OUR CUSTODIANS!

I want to give a big thank you to Brenda Winters and a team of gentlemen from CES and other schools who spent hours doing the back breaking work of getting our school plowed, shoveled and snowblown, all with the effort of getting teachers and students back into the building. We couldn't do what we do if it wasn't for them. Thanks Brenda and team!!!
