Marvellous Roman Shields by Isabelle

We have been learning all about the Romans and we have been making shields that a Roman soldier might have had. The swords on the shields represent war and the lightning bolts represent the ruler of the Roman gods, Jupiter. We designed the shields and then made them using cardboard, red paper, foil and glue. Some of our shields are symmetrical. We are looking forward to learning how Roman legions used their shields when they were away at war!

Wizardology by Oliver

We have been looking at Dragonology, a really exciting non-fiction book. It is a great book because it helps you imagine what dragons could be like. We are using this book to help write our own books about Wizardology which will include lots of information about wizards. We have included fabulous information about special powers and spells that our created wizards can do. Through this work we have learnt about using parenthesis, expanded noun phrases and making our writing exciting by the use of excellent adjectives. We are looking forward to sharing our book with everyone.

Year 3 welcome worship by Daniel

This week Year 3 led Welcome Worship. We talked about how we can help our friends by looking after them when they get hurt and helping them when they are sad by supporting them to make new friends. We also created posters about how people could be good friends. We finished our worship with a prayer about being a friend to animals. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came to see our worship.

Visit your local library

Our Year 6 children have been to Ripon Library a couple of times already this term. They were in for an extra special treat last Friday when they encountered visitors from Star Wars! There may not always be special guests there, but we would strongly recommend you pop along to the library at any time. Your children will love the wide range of books they can borrow for free. Keep an eye out for other activities run by the library throughout the year.

Remembering St Wilfrid!

Dean John came to lead our worship on Friday. He told the children how it was a very special day for the whole of Ripon, as it was the anniversary of St Wilfrid's death. We learnt all about the life of St Wilfrid, how he lived on Lindisfarne, built the first Cathedral in Ripon, became a bishop and taught people how to pray and fish!

Parent Teacher Appointments Friday 19th October

Please remember that school is not open for children next Friday. Most parents have now booked their slot to see their child's teacher. Booking closes on Sunday, so please click for the booking site now if you have not yet made your appointment.

If you are at work on Friday, may we suggest booking your children into Oscar's for the day? Full details are in the Oscar's section below. Please contact Mrs Rich if you are having any difficulty booking a place.

Improve your whole family's Spanish!

We have an exciting opportunity coming up for one family to strengthen their European links and language skills! If you would like to host our Spanish exchange teaching student from Monday 5th November for 12 weeks (except Christmas), please contact Mrs Binks. Basic costs are covered and your guest will help with housework/babysitting and encourage your children to speak Spanish too.

Individual and Family Photographs

Our excellent school photographer Carolyn will be in school on Wednesday. She will take individual pupil photographs during the day. A letter went home last week for you to book appointment slots after school; please ask at reception of you have mislaid yours. You might be able to fit your photo slot in with the teacher appointment if you've booked it for that evening rather than the Friday. Bring the whole family for some lovely portraits which will be available to purchase and will be delivered in time for Christmas!

Oscar's Special Play Dates!

Oscar's will be open for the full day on the Friday 19th October training day at a bargain cost of £20 for 8am to 5.15pm or £15 for 8am to 1pm/1pm to 5.15pm. Some places remain and booking is made using our online booking site. Just use the email address you have provided to school as your username and click 'forgotten password' the first time you use it. Please contact Mrs Rich if you are experiencing any booking issues.

Do you have to go back to work in the second week of the Christmas holidays? Oscar's will open on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd January, 9am to 5pm. Booking will open soon.

Message from the Governors

Meet your Governors

The parent teacher appointment day on Friday 19th October should see many of you in school, so the governors hope you will also take the opportunity to visit their refreshment table! As well as enjoying a coffee with them, this will be a great time to meet the governors and find out more about their work for school.

MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS

Our new chair people: The wonderful Tina, Liz and Katy have volunteered to co-chair this year, but they need a fourth person to share the role. This is an ideal opportunity to get involved as the team are very experienced so can guide any newcomer through with ease. Please get in touch.

Design your own Christmas card or mug: Your child will bring home a form to complete for designing and ordering their own personalised items. Please return it by Monday 22nd October. Thank you.
