Attendance Corner - Everything you need to know!!
WHY AM I GETTING ATTENDANCE LETTERS?
The 1st attendance letter is generated and sent after a student is absent (excused or unexcused) for three or more days in the semester.
The 2nd attendance letter is generated and sent after a student is absent (excused or unexcused) for five or more days in the semester.
The 3rd and final attendance letter is generated and sent after a student is absent (excused or unexcused) for nine or more days in the semester.
These letters are meant to be informative and cautionary in nature. If student absences continue after the third letter is sent, an emergency conference is scheduled with the student’s parents and administrator(s) to determine what interventions are necessary. If the issue of the student’s chronic absenteeism is not resolved, the case is then referred to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) on the county level for further action.
Most children miss a few days of school each year without long-term consequences. However, when they miss several days, the effects are almost always negative.
As we get further into the school year, we would like to remind you of the importance of good attendance for all students. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning.
Too many absences not only can affect achievement for the absent student but also can disrupt learning for the entire class. Research shows that students who consistently miss school are at risk of lower academic achievement, failure and even dropping out of school altogether.
Bringing awareness to the issue of chronic absenteeism, and providing information and resources to parents can help improve student attendance and, consequently, student achievement. We saw during the pandemic how important it is for students to be learning in person from their teachers and alongside their classmates.
What Can Families Do?
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Start building this habit now so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college, and in their careers.
What you can do:
Avoid scheduling vacations when school is in session. They are considered unexcused absences (unless the student completes a pre-arranged Short-Term Independent Study Contract.)
Build regular routines for bedtime and the morning.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before school.
Talk about the importance of regular attendance and about how your child feels about school.
Don’t permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check for a fever. Remember that stomach aches and headaches may be signs of anxiety.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Ask a family member, neighbor, or another parent for help.
Seek support from school staff or community groups to help with transportation, health problems, or no safe path to school.

Campaign Launch: Fighting Fentanyl in EDC!!!
El Dorado COPE launched a Public Awareness Campaign last week to increase community awareness of the rise of fentanyl substance use and fentanyl-related overdoses locally, statewide, and nationally.
The Fighting Fentanyl in EDC campaign provides the EDC community with easily-accessible information regarding fentanyl, substance use disorders, and how to respond when someone overdoses. El Dorado COPE has compiled information regarding the signs of an overdose, testing for fentanyl, and knowing your rights. The campaign website page also acts as a directory of SUD-related services in El Dorado County and provides agency information for SUD treatment, MAT treatment, free Narcan distribution sites, and harm reduction services.
Please join us in promoting this important new resource. We have designed and created a handful of materials to share with our community partners. The Fighting Fentanyl campaign features:
· a ready-to-print informational brochure
· 3 ready-to-print wallet cards that highlights the campaign and specific information regarding SUDs
· and 4 ready-to-post social media graphic sets that promote sections of the campaign
**Campaign materials are currently being translated into Spanish and will be released to the public within the next couple of weeks.
The campaign and campaign materials can be found and downloaded via the website page https://www.eldoradocope.org/fightingfentanyl. The desktop and mobile version of the campaign is live. For best viewing on a desktop use a Google Chrome web browser. For best at-home printing, print from a web browser.
Thank you for joining us in our effort to make these resources widely available in our communities. Your partnership is invaluable to us.
