Southwest Elementary News
Week of April 15, 2024
From the Principal
Dear Families,
I hope you are all enjoying the warm spring weather we have been experiencing lately! I know the students and staff are loving their time outside during recesses! If we could just get the wind to stop blowing! The custodians have started the mowing already and that always gets me anxious for summer!
Our Rock'n Riders are planning a "Blooming For Donations" food drive for McCook Pantry. If you would like to send donations to school with your child, the Rock'n Riders will gather and deliver them on April 19th. At the end of the week, the class with the most donations will receive a special treat.
The 3rd through 5th grades have started taking their NSCAS state assessments that will continue through the month of April. It is important that students do their best on these assessments as we use the data to measure student progress and develop our instruction to meet individual student needs. This is a tough time of year to get our students to continue working hard and focusing on their learning, yet it is a very important time of year for testing! Please encourage your child to continue working hard and make sure they are getting plenty of rest in the evenings so they are able to focus when they get here.
Celebrations from the Week:
The Southwest choir and band students gave outstanding performances at the Music Contest in Cambridge. Both our Choir and Band received "Excellent" ratings. Skyler and Tia Liebrandt each received an "Excellent" rating on their instrumental solos. Jacob McVay received a "Superior" rating on his trombone solo and won the overall elementary brass solo. Their dedication and hard work truly shone through! Don't worry if you missed the contest; you can catch their next performance at the Spring Music program on May 2nd in Bartley.
Additional Information:
Southwest Public Schools is excited to offer an academic summer enrichment program to students in grades K-5 who may benefit from some additional support in the areas of mathematics and/or reading. This engaging program will be designed to give individual students targeted support in the foundational math and reading skills necessary for success in meeting grade-level standards. The program will also include enrichment activities in addition to the focus on reading and math. The summer school staff realizes this is summer break and, therefore, tries to make the summer program educational, yet fun and engaging. We do ask that your child commits to attending at least 12 out of the 16 days to fully benefit from the summer school program. We sent letters out on Friday; however, if your child didn't receive a letter, they are still welcome to attend. Please give the school a call and let us know they will be attending.
Warm regards,
Tara Fries Principal,
Southwest Elementary School
We are grateful for your continued support and partnership in your child's education journey. Thank you for all that you do!
