Mr. Corso's Weekly Principal's Message
Positive Raiders: Responsible, Respectful, Hard Working and Kind
This Week’s Positive Message: Thank you again for everyone’s support this week. Our staff, students and families were amazing during a challenging time. It is wonderful to be part of a community like Black Mountain.
Congratulations to all of our students who received ALL O’s and G’s for our 2nd Trimester Progress Report. You are all outstanding! Being on time, organized and working hard every day pays off. You have much to be proud of and we are proud of you! Keep up the good work Hard Working Raiders!
The Black Mountain community was saddened to hear the tragic news regarding a car accident involving PUSD students. Our thoughts are with their families. As Dr. Phelps stated, if you know a student struggling with the news, please reach out to one of our counselors for help.
Thank you for your continued support,
Scott Corso, Principal
Black Mountain Middle School
New Foyer
Over the past 3 years, we have made a lot of effort to make BMMS feel like a warmer, more welcoming environment. Our foyer of our MPR has received a recent facelift, including a new sign partially funded by the Education Foundation. For many of our families, this is the first place they visit their first time at BMMS. We thank the Foundation and our district for their help on this project.
2020-2021 Enrollment Transfer Timeline Update
(Reminder)
If you live in the Poway Unified School District boundaries and are interested in requesting a transfer to a school that is not your school of residence, you must submit a request during the transfer window of February 1 – March 31, 2020. No transfer requests will be accepted outside of this window, and no exceptions will be made. Note: if your student is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer and is moving to the next level (elementary to middle or middle to high school), he/she does not automatically move to the next school with their classmates. You must reapply for an Intradistrict Transfer. If your child is currently on an Intradistrict Transfer, his/her siblings do not automatically get into to the transfer school. You must apply for a separate Transfer for the sibling. Please click the link below for more information and frequently asked questions on transfer requests, as well as upcoming timelines for continuing student registration and new student enrollment. https://powayusd.com/en-US/Departments/Attendance-Discipline/Student-Transfer-Requests/FAQs-for-Residency-Transfers

Parent University
BMMS Parent University
We have several parent workshops coming in the next few weeks hosted at Black Mountain.
Raising Healthy Teens -
January 28, 2020 – Tuesday 6:00-7:00 BMMS Library
On January 28th students will participate in an assembly lead by The YouSchool, a local company committed to helping school cultures realign so that all students have the opportunity to construct meaningful lives for themselves. We've also partnered with them to offer a parent workshop the same night of the Assembly, giving you the opportunity to come and be more equipped in the unique tools parents of teenagers need to guide them well.
In an interactive workshop format, you'll be guided through stories and a common-sense framework to reflect on who your kids are and who they're becoming, and what you can do to align your parenting and the culture of your family to give your kids the best opportunity to grow up healthy and wise. In case you aren't able to attend, we'll be recording the workshop and sharing it later. Please RSVP for this event at the following link: https://forms.gle/dn1GwZzJufBFTpY89
Making the Most Out of High School & College Readiness
February 5. 2020 – Wednesday 6:00-7:00pm BMMS Little Theater
One of our most popular Parent University seminars. This workshop, presented by Kim Bronson - counselor at Mt Carmel High School, focuses on preparing and easing the transition to high school while maintaining your sanity. She will discuss strategies to empower your student to have successful habits of mind and provide an overview of the college application process and ways to support your student’s college exploration journey.
Additional parenting workshops in our district:
What I Wish MY Parents Knew: The next “What I Wish My Parents Knew” parent forum is coming to Oak Valley Middle School on Wednesday January 29th from 6:30-8:45. This event is centered on interactive sessions that feature the voices of students from our PUSD community. Local community leaders and the principals from our PUSD High Schools will be facilitating workshops addressing topics such as Communicating with Your Teen, Handling Academic Pressure, Establishing Guardrails, Managing Social Media, Managing Healthy Relationships, and Managing Stress & Anxiety. More information can be found about this organization at www.whatiwishmyparentsknew.com. Your attendance at this event on January 29th could be extremely valuable for helping your child find success today, into high school, and beyond. I would highly encourage parents to attend.
