Modern Dance

Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn are very well known to be the pioneers of modern dance in America. Modern Dance became official in America during the turn of the 20th century when a number of choreographers and dancers became rebellious against the two types dances that were currently acceptable at the time, ballet and vaudeville. Now, modern dance no longer relies on techniques but more on the theatrical element of dancing and lyrical emotions. Modern Dance also values a weighted use of the body in relation to the earth.
