Equity in the Mathematics Classroom
“I’m not good at math.” “I can’t do this.” As math teachers, many of us hear comments like these, see some students sitting passively in their seats, or see students actively disrupt others’ learning. At the same time, the same students repeatedly actively engage in answering questions and doing the mathematical heavy lifting. What causes these differences in participation in math classrooms? As teachers, what can we do to promote equal participation--and learning--in our classes? In this presentation, Dr. Joy Oslund will discuss causes of unequal participation and share teaching moves that help promote equal participation in challenging mathematics content.
