From the Principal's Desk
Good Morning Lancer Families,
As some may remember, one of the changes in this year's new bell schedule is that we do not have dedicated time for social emotional learning. Instead, we are employing an integrated approach, in other words, SEL instruction takes place during regular classroom instruction. Because of this new approach, it is common that students have no idea that SEL strategies are being used. So, when asked by parents and others if they are engaging in SEL instruction, the answer we are often hearing from students this year is "no." In reality, they are, the instruction just isn't explicitly identified when it's happening. I have asked our teachers to call SEL out when it is being used. Additionally, I'd like to share out with families all the ways that SEL is being used in our classrooms. Bottom line, SEL instruction is happening...a lot. Take a look:
Next, it's Red Ribbon Week! This annual tradition, organized in collaboration with our PTSA, is a celebration of our ongoing efforts to keep our community drug free. PTSA has organized several events this week. Take a look:
Finally, parents help us remind all studies about the importance of regular attendance as well as on-time arrival. Due to the recent increase in tardies, there will be a Tardy Sweep sometime this week. Students who are caught in the tardy sweep will be assigned a detention. Students, be sure to be in your classroom when the tardy bell rings each period!
That's it for now, enjoy what remains of your weekend.

October Artists of the Month
James Shields (9th) has been an exceptional student over this month and has worked extremely hard to not only learn his part in our marching band show, but has become someone that I can rely on to help work with others. He has improved tremendously as an instrumentalist since the summer and continues to impress our marching band staff by how quickly he absorbs new information and applies it to his work. Jimmy is a member of the Lancer Marching Band, Honors Wind Ensemble, and Studio Jazz Band as a Trombonist and Baritone player.
Serena Rinehart (12th) continues to shine as a star soloist in our Fall field show, “Masquerade.” Serena has performed beautifully at our football games, Sounds of Conejo, as well as our debut performance in competition at the Royal Classic Field Tournament where Thousand Oaks earned a sweepstakes award for highest score of the competition. Serena is our senior trumpet section leader and is also our lead trumpet in Honors Wind Ensemble, and our Studio Jazz Band. Serena will be auditioning for several Honor Band groups this Fall. Having her as a section leader is almost like having a staff member work with our students, we could not be more grateful for her contributions to the program as a whole.
Peer Tutoring Groups
This week's Science PTG (Wednesday) will be meeting in Mr. Hernandez's room, E2.
Exciting News from TOHS Choir!
Congratulations to Raya Liu and Lotus Ward of the Thousand Oaks High School Choir! They auditioned and were selected for the Southern California Vocal Association High School Honor Choir. Raya and Lotus were selected from a pool of hundreds of vocalists from as far north as Bakersfield to the southern border. They will travel to the University of Redlands at the end of November to participate in the honor choir weekend, culminating in a performance with prestigious guest conductor Dr. Joseph Modica, Director of the School of Performing Arts and the Conservatory of Music at the University of Redlands and Artistic Director of the Inland Master Chorale.

CCGI Information From Your Counselors
Attention 12th grade students!!
Welcome to your last year of high school! How exciting!
For many of you this means applying to colleges/universities in the next coming months.
Our district will no longer be using Naviance for college admissions or college/career search tools. Our new provider and support will be CCGI-CaliforniaColleges.edu. CCGI is a nonprofit that works with school districts throughout California to achieve two major goals: (1) to ensure that all high school seniors in California graduate with clear postsecondary goals and a plan for how to achieve them, and (2) that each student's academic transcript data follows them as they advance across educational systems to reduce information gaps that could otherwise hinder their success.
As part of this effort, CCGI manages the state of California's college and career planning platform, CaliforniaColleges.edu. This web-based platform offers students, families, and educators a single access point for college and career preparation, applications, planning tools, and information to help plan for life after high school.
Your TOHS counselors will be coming into the Economics/Government classes on September 21st and 22nd to describe this new platform and how it will support you in applying to colleges. We will also discuss other ways that students apply to college, such as the Common Application, and how to request transcripts, by using Parchment.
We know this is a big transition for your 12th grade year but, trust us, we are all here to support you!
In anticipation of the counselors coming into the classroom, the best thing you can do is register for CCGI/CaliforniaColleges.edu. The steps are listed below. You can also check out our counseling website for more information on the college application process:
https://sites.google.com/learn.conejousd.net/tohscounseling/high-school/college-applications
Please reach out to your school counselor if you have any questions.
You can also contact our college and career readiness counselor, Mrs. Daigneault.

Info on the California Proficiency Program (CPP)
The California Proficiency Program (CPP) is a voluntary test that assesses proficiency in basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills taught in public schools. Eligible pupils who pass the CHSPE are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency by the State Board of Education. A pupil who receives a Certificate of Proficiency may, with verified approval from the parent or legal guardian, leave high school early. The Certificate of Proficiency, however, is not equivalent to completing all coursework required for regular graduation from high school.
