Our CUHSD College Fair was a big hit with over 900 attendees and 40+ Admissions Representatives from colleges across the country. Hopefully you came and were able to learn about some colleges you had never heard of before that sounded interesting. Thanks to all the parents and students who volunteered to help setup and clean up for this event.
Westmont Students Awarded with Academic Honors from College Board National Recognition Program
Congratulations to
Amelie Arango, Angel Francisco, Ava Garcia, Cruz Heredia,
Danielle De La Cruz, Jacqueline Mclean, Leanna Gager,
Natessa Wright, Roan Hannagan
The above Westmont High School students have earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and stand out during the admissions process.
Students who earned this recognition are from underrepresented groups, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams.
“We want to honor the hard work of these students through the College Board National Recognition Programs. This program creates a way for colleges and scholarship programs to connect directly with underrepresented students who they are hoping to reach,” said Tarlin Ray, College Board senior vice president of BigFuture. “We hope the award winners and their families celebrate this prestigious honor and it helps them plan for their big future.”

We've had 4 workshops so far and had a great turnout of students. If you missed the workshops you find the slides on Canvas in the Student Services Hub -> College & Career -> Events. If you are planning to apply to a UC or any private schools you should be working on your essays.
The remaining workshops will be in October and November and will be workshops to help with completing the Common Application, the UC Application and the CSU Application. Also here are a few things you might consider doing:
- Come to our College Visits during study hall and lunch in the library. There are some interesting schools you've probably never heard of which you could add to your college list. Many are on a Rolling Admission so you can apply anytime and hear back within a month.
- Check out the College and Career page on the Student Services Hub in Canvas for information on Applying to College.
- October 1st you can create a CalState Apply account if you are applying to an CSUs.
- October 1st you can start your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or your California Dream Act Application (CADAA).
- If you have started your UC Application and are having difficulty selecting a major, check out this UC Application Tutorial: Selecting a Major
Juniors
This is the year you should be learning about colleges. Expand your mind and learn about some colleges you've never heard of before. Ask your teachers where they attended college and then what they liked best about that college. If you haven't heard of their college before, google them and find out more about them. What kind of majors do they offer? What are the best known for? Do they have a football team or whatever else is important to you? Now is the time do do your research. Just spend a 20 minutes a week doing a little research about different colleges. It might be fun!

Klaus's Kernels
College Visits have started! I'm collecting some FUN FACTS about the colleges that have visited as well as some I picked up at the CSU Counselor Conference.
- Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) is the 2nd oldest Pharmacy School in the Nation, located in Boston, MA.
- Chapman University students like to take the "Chapman Challenge" which is to go surfing and snowboarding in the same day. This is possible because of their proximity to both the beach and the mountains.
- CSU San Marcos builds a new structure on their campus every year.
- CSU Fullerton was the 12th CSU in the 23 campus system across California.
- Sacramento State is located just 6 miles from the California State Capitol.
- Former Humboldt State, now Cal Poly Humboldt, is the newest and 3rd Polytechnic University in the CSU system.
- CSU Northridge will be the home of the future Global Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Equity Innovation Hub which will work to transform HSIs throughout the CSU and nation in order to increase student success and equip Latinx and other historically underserved students with skills for high-demand careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
- CSU Long Beach has a new mascot, no longer the 49ers, they are now Sharks which is appropriate considering they house a shark lab on the campus for the Marine Biology students.
- Fresno State has a winery that has received Wine Awards on 300 of their wine vintages.

College Spotlight
Southern Oregon University by Jupiter Polevoi
Sitting in the beautiful college town of Ashland, Oregon lies Southern Oregon University- which like its name- is in Southern Oregon. SOU is in Outside Magazine’s top 10 best towns in America, and that completely does it justice. With its beautiful array of trees bursting with shades of green, red, and yellow, it’s unlike anything you can find in dry California. You get about 2-3 seasons, with the summers in the high 80s and the winters in the low 50s.
SOU is a liberal arts school, and its smaller size makes it perfect for that sense of belonging to a community and feeling seen by the faculty. Speaking of so, the faculty to student ratio is 19/1 (Westmont being 24/1). SOU offers 41 majors, and is most known for its theatre program, for Ashland is famous for its annual Shakespeare festival. They also offer 44 minors, as well as 14 graduate (masters) programs.
Good news! Southern Oregon University is a part of the WUE program. For those of you who don’t know what WUE is, WUE stands for Western Undergraduate Exchange, and it partners with schools from the West coast and Northwest to offer lower admission rates to students in participating states. Thanks to WUE, instead of paying out of state tuition (about $49,368 with room and board), you would pay about $35,700. It’s still a lot of money, but an amazing deal with almost $15,000 off. Even as an Oregon resident you pay about $31,000, so take advantage of the discount that WUE provides us.
SOU is still currently test optional, and the requirements are very similar to the A-G requirements, however they require one extra year of history (three instead of two) and they don’t require any performing arts (but Westmont does so make sure you get your one year in!).
SOU is a great option for you if you’re looking to stay relatively close to home, want to go to a private school but don’t want to pay ridiculous fees, and want to go to a smaller school with beautiful scenery. Also, they’re visiting our school on September 22nd from 12:30-1:00 so make sure to go!
Quick Facts
- Enrollment: 5362
- Student-to-Faculty Ratio: 19:1
- Tuition: $27,765/ year (Non Resident), $14,130 / year (WUE
- Cost of Attendance: $49,368 (Non Resident), $35,700/ year (WUE)
Top Majors:
- Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services
- Social Sciences
- Visual and Performing Arts
- Education
- Psychology
- Biological Sciences

Ethical Hacker by Jupiter Polevoi
Now you might be thinking, how in the world is hacking ethical? Just the name “hacking” itself has a negative connotation. Companies hire ethical hackers to hack into the company’s firewall, to see if they need to make any changes to their company’s security. If the ethical hacker is able to surpass the firewall, the company knows that they need to make their security stronger.
The median national salary of an ethical hacker is about $104,000. The salary in California is a bit higher, at around $116,000. If you have an interest in computer science and want a more unique tech job, ethical hacking may be for you.
